Google+ went public yesterday. In doing so, it also introduced a slate of enhancements and new features including a three-in-one search service that allows you to search by specific topics and then see posts from relevant users on those topics, along with relevant content from the web. In addition, you can now video chat with as many as ten people through its “Hangout” mode, and if you so choose, broadcast the hangouts to the public. Finally, if you have the Google+ app on Android devices, and a phone with a front-side camera, you can now also participate in the video chats directly from the phone. Not lost in all of this news is the fact that Google made such a major announcement only two days before Facebook’s F8 Conference.
Netflix and Discovery Communications have inked a two-year non-exclusive agreement that will bring additional episodes and seasons of popular series from Discovery, Animal Planet, Science and Military Channel and TLC to Netflix’s Instant Watch subscribers.
SeaChange‘s “Watch & Buy” is a TV-commerce application for set top boxes that allows content providers to sell DVDs through their VOD services. SureWest Communications, a telecommunications company that serves Sacramento, Kansas City and Missouri, will now use the app to offer its VOD subscribers the option to purchase several first-run Warner Bros. movies, including Arthur, Hall Pass and Sucker Punch, on DVD the same day they are available on-demand.
Akoo International, a media and technology company that provides out-of-home programming for over 64 million viewers per month in high-traffic public areas such as shopping malls, was granted patents for its mobile technology in several global markets including Canada, Australia and Israel. Its technology offers smartphone and tablet users the option to search and select on-demand TV content via a mobile app and text messages, access free Wi-Fi in Akoo-enabled areas and receive mobile offers and coupons. The company already holds patents in the U.S., China, Russia and Mexico.
If you’re a fan of Fringe on FOX, as of yesterday, the network will release a digital comic series titled “Beyond the Fringe,” created by DC Comics, which will serve as a complementary piece to the science fiction TV series. New issues will be released every two weeks this fall and will cost $0.99 per download via the DC Comics website or mobile app.
Starting tomorrow, PBS will air the first episode of Ken Burns’ new documentary series, PROHIBITION , for free on its iOS apps. The entire series will air nationally on PBS from October 2-4 and will also be streamed live on its website.
Acorn Media Group is expanding its online streaming service Acorn TV‘s selection of critically acclaimed British television series to full seasons of ten different classic British TV shows. The service is compatible with iPhones, iPads, Apple TV and Google TV. The subscription is available for $24.99 a year and offers unlimited viewing of the 60 total hours of available programming.
AOL unveiled plans for a new feature on its Project Devil ad service that aims to help advertisers circumvent the click-through, according to AdWeek. Basically, Project Devil will use HTML5 technology to overlay content – including branding, technology and even transactions – straight from the advertisers’ own website on to the display ad. The users won’t even have to leave the site they’re visiting as the display ad will just expand to almost full screen mode. AOL hopes to roll it out in time for the coming holiday season.
ComScore, via its latest Media Metrix report, released its ranking of the top 50 online advertising networks in the United States. Google Ad Network led the way with an online reach of 93.4% of Americans, followed by Yahoo! Network Plus, AOL Advertising, AT&T Ad Works (its debut on the Ad Focus ranking) and ValueClick Networks rounding out the top five.
Adchemy, Inc., by completing its Series E round of funding with Microsoft to the amount of $61 million, will expand its existing ad technology partnership with Microsoft Advertising to include the Adchemy IntentMap platform. The platform will look to help Microsoft adCenter customers create more relevant paid search campaigns by focusing on what Adchemy calls “customer intent” instead of individual keywords. As part of the completed round of funding, Microsoft will also gain a minority stake in Adchemy.
The Coalition of Free TV and Broadband and the National Translator Association are banding together to combat the spectrum auction bill currently being discussed in the House Subcommittee on Communications and Technology. Both organizations cite free over-the-air television and rebroadcast services as a necessity in providing access and content to rural markets that urban TV stations cannot reach, and also argue that giving more control of spectrum to only a few wireless providers would not serve the best interests of the consumers.
Wayne, a fuel dispenser manufacturer and GE Energy business, is making an investment of $50 million in Gas Station TV (GSTV) and its inOvationTV media platform to extend its offering to more gas stations in the country. Free of charge for qualified gas stations, the platform provides videos and entertainment, including content from partners such as ESPN and Bloomberg TV, to customers at the pump and in the stations’ stores. The investment will increase GSTV’s monthly viewership from 27 million to nearly 70 million.
A new IDC research study reports that media tablet shipments in Europe, Middle East and Africa will reach almost 4.4 million units in the second quarter of 2011, far surpassing the original forecast of 3.7 million units and up 394% when compared to the same quarter last year and 82% when compared to the first quarter of 2011. Consumers’ “wait-and-see” attitude in regards to the iPad 2 and the delayed release of Android Honeycomb are given as the main reasons for the percentage jump from Q1 to Q2. In related, but unsurprising news, Apple is still seen as the king in the region holding a 2Q11 share of 66.6%, or 2.9 million of the 4.4 million units shipped.
A study of U.K. parents of children aged ten years or younger by Westcoastcloud, a cloud-based internet security services provider, found that one in ten primary school children in the U.K. have iPhones and one in ten parents feel its appropriate for children as young as four to own mobile phones. Furthermore, 68% of parents who are comfortable with their children owning phones admitted it’s mainly due to wanting to keep tabs on them.
IP set top box unit shipments will surpass 21 million in 2011, according to In-Stat research on the market segment. Other findings include:
- The IP set top box market will grow 14% in 2011.
- Motorola retained the largest market share in 2010 at 21% of the market.
- North American IP set top box unit shipments will increase by 48% in 2012.
- Western Europe will bring in 46% of global IP set top box revenues in 2013.
“ Memonic Clipper” is a cloud-based note-taking application that is currently available for free on the Salesforce AppExchange. The app seeks to help salespeople and marketers close more deals by letting them clip web information, say on a lead or contact, directly into Salesforce.
Jason Odell is joining Current TV as its new Executive Vice President, Technology. Odell will report to Current TV President David Bohrman and will be responsible for IT, web engineering and broadcast engineering at the network.
Kantar Video, the online and mobile video research and measurement arm of WPP’s Kantar Media, has tabbed Leigh Newsome to be its new Senior Vice President, Technology. Reporting directly to Kantar Video CEO William A. Lederer, Newsome will oversee the engineering efforts behind the Kantar Videolytics platform that is slated to be released this fall.
TabTimes, an upcoming business magazine for tablets, has hired Rick Vandervoorn as Associate Publisher and Vice President, Sales. Based in New York, Mr. Vandervoorn will lead advertising sales, marketing and business development for the magazine, which is set to launch on the iPad in the coming months.

Recently, the site launched a free iPhone app that lets you follow all the feeds and blogs of your favorite sports, teams and athletes.
