Cynopsis: Kids!
9/20/07
Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 20, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Just when you had all of your summer 2009 plans in place … DreamWorks Animations SKG and Paramount have shifted the release date for Monsters vs. Aliens, DreamWorks’ first movie to be fully produced in stereoscopic 3D, to hit theaters on March 27, 2009. Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO/DreamWorks, explained the move to March, a family-friendly time for movies, will allow Monsters vs. Aliens to rollout on the maximum number of screens. Monsters vs. Aliens had been set for release on May 15, 2009, which would have put it a week ahead of James Cameron’s 3D CG sci-fi movie Avatar, which is slated for a May 22, 2009 release, and limiting the number of 3D capable theaters available to each movie. However, the move does put Monsters vs. Aliens up against Sony’s animated movie Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, currently also slated for release on March 27, 2009.
Peter Hannan, the creator of Nickelodeon’s animated series CatDog, has entered into a development deal with Cartoon Network. Under the deal Hannan will adapt his new kids chapter book series Wally, King of Flurb into an animated series. Hannan is currently writing and illustrating Wally, King of Flurb series for HarperCollins.
MORE KIDS STUFF
TV Land celebrates Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children by going dark for one hour at dinnertime on September 24, 6-7p, to encourage families to eat dinner together. Those who tune to TV Land during that time will see viewer-submitted photos of families eating together. Leading into Family Day, TV Land will feature family dinner-themed episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, Sanford & Son, and MASH on September 23, 8-10p. Now in its 6th year, Family Day- was created by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University. CASA’s research over the last 10+ years has shown that the more often kids eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs. This is third year that TV Land has tied into CASA’s Family Day, which dove-tails with TV Land’s 3-year-old Family Table: Share More Than Meals initiative.
Nippon Animation appoints TV-Loonland to handle the multi-territory distribution of its 3D animated preschool property Penelope (26x5m). According to the deal, TV-Loonland will manage the TV, home video, VOD, broadband, IPTV and mobile sales for Penelope in Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, Baltic States, Scandinavia, Israel, the Middle East and Africa, including South Africa. A co-production of Nippon Animation, BHK Enterprises and Shirogumi Inc., Penelope is based on the kid’s book of the same name penned by Anne Gutman and illustrated by Georg Hallensiben.
Production has wrapped on Cartoon Network‘s live-action TV movie, Ben 10 Live: Race Against Time. Based on the network’s animated action/adventure series Ben 10, the TV movie Graham Phillips (Evan Almighty) as Ben, Lee Majors as Grandpa Max and Haley Ramm (X-Men 3) as Ben’s 10-yr-old cousin Gwen. Directed by Alex Winter (he was Bill in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure) the movie is slated to air on Cartoon Network in November.
The Naked Brothers Band’s new 1-hour TV movie, Battle of the Bands, is set to premiere on Nickelodeon Saturday, October 6 at 8p. That night The Naked Brothers Band will introduce the special, and the group’s music video, which debuted earlier this month, will re-air. Additionally, Nickelodeon will offer a sweepstakes on-air October 6, that kids can enter by calling the on-screen toll-free number. The following night, October 7, cast-members Bobby Love and Nat Wolff will host TEENick (7-9p), during which the contest winner will be announced and the movie will re-air at 7p. The network will support the movie premiere on-air from October 1, by featuring cast members throughout the week, including answering questions from fans submitted online. The Naked Brothers Band self-titled debut album will release on October 9. Additionally, on October 6, Nickelodeon
Nick Jr.’s new live-action music series Yo Gabba Gabba! will feature guest stars when four new episodes premiere next week, September 24-27, at 10:30a, including Tony Hawk on Monday and recording artist Nikki Flores on Wednesday.
Disney Channel will premiere the third season of the animated series Charlie and Lola on Saturday, October 13 at 11:30a. Charlie and Lola airs daily at 11:30a during the Playhouse Disney programming block.
CCI Entertainment, a Canadian producer/distributor of family entertainment, has unveiled plans to expand its business development by acquiring family entertainment properties and furthering its brand licensing activities, and opening an office in LA. Inn support of the expansion, CCI has picked-up worldwide rights (excluding France) to the animated series Frankenstein’s Cat (30x11m). Additionally, CCI has also acquired rights to the live-action action/adventure series Wormwood (13x30m). Annette Frymer, COO, will lead the initiative.
Bejuba Entertainment will showcase its newest animated comedy, Ricky Sprocket-Showbiz Boy (26x22m or 52x11m), at MIPCOM Jr. this fall. Targeted to K6-12, the show revolves around superstar child actor Ricky Sprocket, as he tries to deal with Hollywood and fans, not to mention family, friends and school, and of course his annoying sister. The series has already bowed on Canada’s Teletoon and Nickelodeon UK, and will rollout on Nickelodeon channels in Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, Italy and Scandinavia among others, and is slated to premiere in 2008 on Nicktoons Network in the US. Ricky Sprocket-Showbiz Boy is a co-production between Snowden Fine Animation Inc. and Studio B Productions Inc. in association with Bejuba! Entertainment Inc.
4Kids Entertainment ha inked broadcast deals for two animated adventures properties across Asia and Australia, Europe, South America and Canada:
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fast Forward is set to launch on Network Ten (Australia), Cartoon Network (Australia, New Zealand, India and Philippines), Kids Central (Singapore), Indosiar (Indonesia), ABS-CBN (Philippines), Momo Kids (Taiwan), TV3 (Malaysia), MNET (South Africa), Star (Turkey) and MBC (Dubai).
