Stating that “AT&T’s elimination of T-Mobile as an independent, low-priced rival would remove a significant competitive force from the market,” the U.S. Department of Justice has filed an antitrust lawsuit against AT&T’s $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile. In response to the complaint, Wayne Watts, AT&T’s senior executive VP and senior counsel said, “We are surprised and disappointed by today’s action… We plan to ask for an expedited hearing so that the enormous benefits of this merger can be fully reviewed. The DOJ has the burden of proving alleged anti-competitive affects and we intend to vigorously contest this matter in court.” If this lawsuit succeeds in preventing the purchase from going through, AT&T is slated to owe $6 billion to T-Mobile’s parent company, Deutsche Telekom.
ESPN is renaming the online website for its authenticated TV networks from ESPNnetworks.com to WatchESPN.com. The name change reflects the name of the “ WatchESPN” app, launched in April 2011, which allows users to watch live ESPN content 24/7 on their smartphones and tablets.
CNN is set to air replays of HBO’s 24/7 Mayweather/Ortiz, a documentary series that focuses on the upcoming boxing tilt between Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz. The four-part series follows both boxers around as they prepare for their championship bout on September 17 in Las Vegas. CNN will replay the first episode on September 2 and the final two back-to-back on September 16, less than 24 hours before the match.
Google has launched Offline Gmail as a Google Web Store app for its Chrome browser. Furthermore, offline versions of Google Docs and Google Calendar will be unveiled within the coming week. While no timetable has been given, Google says it plans to release offline versions of these apps for other browsers.
Facebook will launch a music service at F8 on September 22, according to the unofficial transcript of breaking news delivered by CNBC’s Jon Fortt. He elaborates that, as of now, it seems that Facebook won’t host the music, but will instead partner with other companies to perform those duties.
Yahoo! has extended omg!, their popular celebrity and entertainment news site, by launching a Canada-specific version of the site for our pop culture-obsessed friends north of the border.
Available as of yesterday, Crowdbooster is a social media monitoring and analytics platform that also recommends when to publish your tweets for them to be the most effective. The startup’s service is already being used by numerous brands including rapper Lil’ Wayne, The Los Angeles Times, JetBlue and Ben & Jerry’s. While the app is free for up to 3 profiles, a premium version includes enhanced recommendations and more profiles costs $20 a month.
Subjot, a NYC-based startup, is a Twitter-like micro-blogging service that seeks to differentiate itself by making your timeline less cluttered. It breaks down your stream by only the topics and subjects you are interested in. As TechCrunch reports, Subjot is unlike Twitter and using hashtags in that it does not cull tweets from every user on the service who chose to publish under a specific hashtag. The site was made available to the public yesterday.
In response to growing concerns for consumer privacy, Apple is shutting down its use of unique device identifier numbers. Starting with the iOS 5.0, UDIDs, which are a sequence of 40 letters and numbers unique to each mobile product and which can be used to identify and target users, will be eliminated from Apple mobile devices. It is a move designed to reduce the risk of Apple being identified as part of the problem within the data collection and user privacy issues. It remains to be seen if other companies and mobile platforms will follow suit.
Gannett Co., the country’s biggest newspaper publisher, and Yahoo! announced that they will expand their current advertising partnership to all 19 of Gannett’s local broadcast TV stations by February of 2012. The current advertising partnership covered nine broadcasting markets and all 81 of Gannett’s local publishing organizations. The effort serves to increase Gannett’s presence online and focus on web-based local marketing.
Rovi Corporation has agreed to use its Rovi TotalGuide to power Panasonic‘s electronic program guide for its connected TVs and DVD/BD recorder products in Europe. The advanced media guide that pulls together various types of information and content to one location also features an interactive advertising component that enables brand engagement with consumers.
S3 Group‘s StormTest Decision Line product will now be used by Unipart Technology Logistics (UTL) to analyze set-top boxes and report on any faults found within the devices. UTL manages the repair of all BSkyB set-top boxes in the UK. Furthermore, S3 Group will unveil a demo at IBC2011 that demonstrates a plan using their products and services that ensures efficient content delivery to all types of devices.
According to an eMarketer report, a Yahoo! and Ipsos research study finds that, even though mobile users only spend 7% of their time on their phones shopping, it is while shopping when they are most likely to engage with ads they see on their device. Furthermore, mobile users also prefer to use a browser to shop, instead of an app.
IAB partnered with Ipsos Mendelsohn for a custom study of affluents and digital media. Via MediaPost , some interesting findings from this study include:
- 21% of U.S. households possess almost 60% of total U.S. household wealth and 70% of all U.S. consumer wealth.
- While affluents consume less television and radio, they are the heaviest users of digital media, spending an average of 26.2 hours online every week compared to an average of 21.2 hours for the general population.
- More than 33% of affluents agree with the following statement: “I am usually willing to share some information about myself online so that I can get a more customized online experience.”

Sony unveiled the S and P, its first generation Android tablets. The S, a curvy model that comes in 16GB and 32GB sizes and on 4G for AT&T, features cross-device connectivity between other Sony products including the Sony Bravia TV and the PlayStation 3. Meanwhile, the P is a clamshell model that offers dual screen technology. Current indications set the S’ price at $499 (16GB) and $599 (32GB); there is no price information yet for the P.
JibJab, they of the popular “ElfYourself” holiday e-cards, has launched “ JibJab Jr. Books.” For the price of free, you can now create personalized children’s books by inserting your child’s face and name into each book. The app comes with one free book while each additional book will cost $7.99. However, JibJab also provides a book-a-month plan for $3.99.
ChaCha, an online and mobile service that provides real-time information and answers for what viewers are watching, saw increased user activity and engagement during the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. The company notes that its users are 239% more likely to say MTV is their favorite channel relative to the norm; and it showed as 70% of all ChaCha questions (almost one million) for the week leading up to the broadcast were about the VMAs.
A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE
Shazam Encore is the premium version of the Shazam music identifying and tagging service. Offered across various mobile devices, the app offers unlimited tagging of songs and the ability to purchase them straight from the phone. However, the true gift of the $5.99 premium version of the service comes in the form of LyricPlay and connectivity. LyricPlay has lyrics for the top 25,000 songs in the Shazam library and can scroll them in real-time; so you can sing along to the music (if you’re like me and are so inclined). On top of that, the app is now integrated with Spotify, so if you also have a Spotify account (which you really should), you can play the song that you just recently tagged on Shazam Encore from the Spotify app on your phone.
