CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

09/01/05

Good morning.  It’s Thursday, September 1, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Many networks are ramping up their efforts to put together telethons/fundraising concerts/events for the victims of Hurricane KatrinaNBC will broadcast A Concert for Hurricane Relief in hi-definition on Friday at 8p with Matt Lauer (which will also air on MSNBC and CNBC); Telemundo‘s United for the Victims of Hurricane Katrina (also airing on mun2) will air on Friday at 9p; BET has a special scheduled for September 9 at 730p; and a concert airing across MTV, VH1 and CMT is scheduled for September 10.  All of these networks are partnering with the American Red Cross to channel donations to hurricane victims.  Additionally, Jerry Lewis has announced that $1 million from this weekend’s Jerry Lewis’ Labor Day MDA Telethon would go to disaster victims.

Meanwhile, a huge collaborative effort between ABC, Fox and CBS is in the works to provide a one hour telethon next Tuesday or Wednesday, that will air across these three primary networks. NBC, UPN and the WB have also signed on to carry the broadcast.  New Orleans’ native Ellen DeGeneres may be on board to host the event, and according to Variety, Joe Gallen who produced the post-9/11 A Tribute to Heroes multi-network telethon, has been approached to produce.

With all of the hurricane coverage and the devastation in the south, you may wonder if ABC has any special plans to edit its new fall series Invasion, which begins with scenes of a hurricane. Broadcasting & Cable reports ABC will not make any changes to the show, which is scheduled to premiere on September 21.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *Generally, Cynopsis doesn’t cover news of network sweepstakes and contests, but this one seems a little different, perhaps because of its product placement tie.  According to a report in this morning’s Wall Street Journal, CBS and General Motors will conduct a contest during the first week of the broadcast season, September 19. CBS will digitally insert the logo of the new GM Chevy Impala into scenes of five scripted series.  Once the viewer spots the logo, they are encouraged to go to the CBS.com site to enter. A new car will be awarded every night during the week.  An ad campaign which kicks off today will direct viewers to the five premiere episodes they need to watch.

The season finale of USA Network‘s The 4400 on Sunday night delivered 3.7 million viewers.  Also on USA, the season finale of Monk on Friday brought in 5.3 million viewers and delivered a 1.6/5 A18-49 rating.

And last Thursday, the season finale of Being Bobby Brown on Bravo took in 701,000 viewers, down from its premiere which gathered 1.1 million viewers last June.

By the time you’ve seen this, Martha has removed her ankle bracelet.  I knew you’d want to be kept abreast of this important development.

And if you’re up early enough, you may still have time to catch Diane Sawyer’s interview with President Bush on this morning’s Good Morning America. As it is, I don’t know which segment it will be in.

And while you’re futzing with your time manager, here’s something else to plan for today — Cynopsis: Weekender returns today – showing up at your end around 11am or thereabouts, and featuring articles by four different writers.

Cynopsis Survey:  In an ongoing search for providing the information you find most useful and helpful, I’ve put together a quick survey relating primarily to programming data for cable networks. This time I’m looking to find out which networks you’d like to see covered with the information in the various survey questions . Certainly we will always endeavor to cover the major stories on any and all networks – this survey won’t change that.  The whole thing shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes – so if you please: Survey click here

  * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Touchstone Television has signed a one year talent-holding deal with actor Michael Landes.  Landes was most recently seen in the BBC and BBC America series Love Soup, and starred in UPN’s Special Unit 2 which aired during the 2001-02 season.

* CARRIAGE DEALS *Scripps Networks and Sky Angel have reached an agreement for the direct broadcast satellite licensee to carry HGTV.  Sky Angel delivers 36 channels of family entertainment, Christian-inspirational programming and news to homes, churches, colleges and businesses in the continental United States through a 20-inch satellite dish.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Lori J. Coro has been named VP/Advertising and Promotion for Paramount Domestic Television. The announcement was made by Michael Mischler, EVP/Marketing for the division and to whom Coro reports. Lori will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision and management of affiliate relations, advertising and promotion on the DR. PHIL show

Kevin Goldman has been named the VP/CNBC Public Relations, replacing Amy Zelvin who was recently named VP/Communciations for NBC Universal Digital Media.  Kevin’s new role begins on Tuesday, and he will be responsible for providing strategic communications/media relations leadership for CNBC.

* RATINGS *Tuesday — A18-49 Analysis:  CBS won the night on Tuesday, according to fast affiliate numbers from Nielsen Media Research, posting an overall 3.1/8 A18-49, ahead of Fox 2.5/7, NBC 2.0/6, ABC 1.8/5, WB 1.1/3, UPN 1.0/3.  At 8p a repeat of NCIS on CBS led with a 2.4/7, outpacing both NBC and Fox by a share point.  Big Brother at 9p was in front with a 3.5/9, while a repeat of House on Fox was #2 with a 2.6/7.  At 10p Rock Star INXS again this week won the time period with a 3.2/9 over NBC’s Law & Order SVU which delivered a 2.3/6.

The History Channel
presents This Day in History:
1807-Former Vice President and noted duelist Aaron Burr is acquitted on charges of treason.  Burr was found guilty of organizing a bizarre and grandiose plot to found an independent republic in what was then Louisiana Territory and parts of Spanish Mexico.  Since he had not taken any overt steps toward this goal, he was not guilty of treason, however.  This was the final act in a political career that began with promising service in the Continental Army and the New York legislature and largely ended when Burr shot his longtime political rival Alexander Hamilton to death in an 1804 duel in New Jersey.  Outrage over the duel had not died down by the time of Burr’s treason trial, and despite his acquittal Burr was forced to live overseas for a brief period
