A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM COMCAST SPOTLIGHT
Cynopsis
09/14/06
Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 14, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
CBS’ Rock Star: Supernova concluded last night by naming the summer series winner Lukas Rossi as the rock band’s new lead singer. Now the band will have to name something else – itself. Last month a rock band from California filed a lawsuit against the show, the network and the three musicians individually who make up the TV rock band Supernova (that’s Tommy Lee, Gilby Clarke and Jason Newsted), for trademark infringement. The California band has been working under the name Supernova for nearly two decades. The US District Court issued an injunction yesterday barring anyone other than the original Supernova band from performing, recording or selling music using the name, at least until the court has made a final ruling in the case. That kind of throws a monkey wrench into the TV series band’s plans to release two original songs over the internet today, and begin working on an album due out in November, released by Epic Records, not to mention their worldwide tour set to kick off in January.
Tonight’s Premieres:
CBS: Survivor: Cook Islands at 8p
A&E: Dallas S.W.A.T. at 10p
Showtime: The Underground at 10p
ABC Newsman Bob Woodruff has recovered enough from his injuries sustain in Iraq last January, that he plans to be back at work this fall, assuming a more regular schedule. ABC News plans to have him eventually return to reporting the news on-air, tho at this point there is no set schedule when that will happen. One of Woodruff’s first assignments back at the network is to report on what the last eight months of his life has been like.
Overall, CBS Sports’ coverage of the 2006 U.S. Open Tennis Championships, including its weeknight Late Night Show, was viewed by approximately 63.5 million viewers, representing a 2% increase from last year’s total of 62.3 million. The Women’s Finals were viewed by 10.8 million people, up 10% from last year, while the Men’s Finals were down by 5% at 18.1 million viewers. Now, just imagine if Agassi had made it into the finals!
DIRECTV, Inc. and video audience measurement company TNS Media Research, are partnering to launch an audience measurement service which will delve into interactive subscriber households. TNS will use aggregated and anonymous clickstream data from 250,000 DIRECTV subscribers to provide reports on viewing and interactive activity. DIRECTV is interested in this information to better understand their customers’ use of its interactive platforms. DIRECTV currently has 15.5 million subscribers.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1752-Great Britain finally adopts the Gregorian calendar, used in much of Europe since 1582. Depending on how you look at it, the eleven days immediately preceding this date never existed: after going to bed on the evening of September 2, Britons woke up on September 14. Britain’s belated calendar reform also formally recognized January 1 as the first day of the year, replacing March 25.

IN RE: CYNOPSIS PUBLISHING UNSIGNED EMAILS TO THE EDITOR
Hi Cynthia,
I’m noticing a serious correlation between the level ignorance and overall snarkiness toward ethnic minority populations regarding the Survivor issue, and the writer’s lack of willingness to state their full name. Anyone who would complain that we don’t have a “white network” is ignorant of both the history of television and the history of this nation.
If people get to flippantly throw out blissfully ignorant statements like this in your Emails to the Editor, then I think it’s only fair and responsible that you, the Editor, should have the right to require that people sign all Emails to the Editor with their first and last name. It’s the least you can do for us all in the best interest of outting the village idiots and ensuring some level of multi-dimensional critical thinking among your readership before opening their big mouths.
Best,
Dominica Myers
IN RE: SURVIVOR
OK, I was not going to comment on this whole Survivor thing. I really have no opinion on it either way. I used to watch it, but I don’t anymore. However, to see all of these comments about the BET network and the Hispanic networks, etc. I’m sorry, but to say there is NO white network is a serious understatement! ABC, NBC, CBS and even FOX are WHITE networks!! Almost all of the cable networks are WHITE networks! African Americans are vastly underrepresented in the mainstream major networks. So that is why there is BET, TV One, etc. In most of the top rated shows, there are either no or one (maybe two) African American characters (CSI, CSI Miami, CBS Monday Night, Lost, Law & Orders, etc.). With the UPN going onto the CW, Sunday night will be the only night African American shows are showcased.
Big ups to shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Young and the Restless for having several African American characters and their own storylines. Look around folks-we are not represented very well in the media industry or in Television. As a media buyer in Atlanta (of all cities!!), there are very few of me (black buyers and planners) and even fewer on the sales side (rep firms!). That is a glaring, serious problem and people are starting to notice. I am well aware of this industry and an avid television watcher. So, don’t talk to me about African American networks or shows, when you (Caucasians) could choose not to watch those and still have a plethora of quality shows to watch. Those of us who want to see ourselves on broadcast television do not have the same choices.

Carla – What was there to add or say? HGTV was including AA in the tri state area. I live in the south, so I had nothing to add. I didn’t read that HGTV was pitting races up for remodeling projects. Were you expecting someone to cheer that they were using minorities? There wouldn’t be a cheer/comment needed or expected had the TV landscape been inclusive from the giddy up.

This is fantastic to have a show that showcases the variety of people in America. But for example, what about the Miss Black USA Pageant – why is this show not protested for singling out one race? We live in a nation where we have the BET network, many Hispanic channels on our cable systems, and even a gay and lesbian channel, but no white network.

Once again you show you’re out of tune. What is so fantastic about a diverse group on TV that competes in its ugliest form by deceiving, conniving, being directed, scripted, etc to win $600K after taxes? Why is it to you so fantastic to showcase a diverse group? What white woman or other race woman was denied entry in the Miss Black USA Pageant.? It was created, because at 1 time blacks couldn’t be in the Miss USA pageant. I’ve never read or seen anywhere in the media that some other race woman was denied entry into any black pageant — have you? You seem to miss the boat a lot on why Survivor’s ploy was protested — he has been singled out for his lack of proper inclusion of other races in the past, and now he chooses to include when ratings down, he says the rules, picks the groups – who do you think controls the game?
At some point they’ll be a mixed group, but before that we’ll see nothing but stereotypes, anger, feeling picked on etc.
You said “no white network??
What is ABC, NBC, CBS, FX, etc to you then? Its your ignorance expressed here is why I reject Survivor’s ploy to boost ratings. Feel good in knowing Pittsburgh your ignorance and its reasoning for what you say is contagious and many have it.

Why in today’s day and age do we STILL live in denial about racism? Yes, it still exists people! The reason folks are concerned about Survivor’s new show format is that it pits races against one another. Haven’t we; dare I say; “overcome” such scenarios? And the majority of programming and films out are based from a Caucasian point of view…and there are some that do not have a single ethnic person on or in it as is if there are NO ethnic people in America or the world for that matter. Not to mentioned their portrayals typically are stereotypical versions at best. Not until people complained did such shows like Friends sprinkle (using that term lightly) ethnic characters of substance or with more than 4 lines and a follow up visit into their format.
So no Pittsburgh, PA the shows for HGTV and Hip Hop Hold ‘Em are NOT racist shows, they’re just focused on a less often seen perspective. And please let’s not “confuse” deliberate concocted racial division or just plain dismissal of existence (another way to discriminate is to act as if they don’t exist) with seeing life / experience through someone else’s perspective in order to uphold the denial that racism isn’t alive and well when we all know better.
