Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 13, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing. 

Do you want some fresh apple fries with that?
Burger King Corp. joins 11 other food and beverage companies in pledging to promote kid’s nutrition by offering healthy food options and in focusing advertising to kids under 12 on making healthy food choices and lifestyles.  Burger King’s pledge features a set of nutritional guidelines that it will follow when advertising to kids 12 and under, by December 2008 such advertising will be limited to Kids Meals that provide:

  • No more than 560 calories per meal
  • Less than 30% of calories from fat
  • Less than 10% of calories from saturated fat
  • No added trans fats
  • No more than 10% of calories from added sugars.

And yes, fresh apple fries is one of the healthy food options Burger King plans to offer as an option for its kid meals beginning spring 2008.  Other new healthy Kids Meal options will include flame broiled chicken tenders, Mott’s organic unsweetened applesauce, and Hershey’s 1% low fat milk.  The Council of Better Business Bureaus has given its endorsement to Burger King’s advertising pledge as being consistent with the core principles set out in the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative.

PorchLight Entertainment has launched beta testing on its new KidVideos.com, a family-friendly and secure video streaming platform where kids can share their own user generated content (videos, film, animation).  When KidVideos.com launches in full it will be an ad-supported site that offers online tools for recording and video editing, online.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fox 2000 has inked a deal with director Elizabeth Allen to helm the movie adaptation of Beverly Cleary’s classic kid’s books series Ramona, about Ramona Quimby and her family, per Variety.  Laurie Craig I penning the screenplay for the movie, which will be produced by Denise DiNovi and Alison Greenspan, from DiNovi Pictures.

MORE KIDS STUFF

TV-Loonland’s multi-platform CGI animated series, The Owl (52×1′), has been acquired by BBC to support its newly re-branded CBBC.  Under the deal the BBC takes the exclusive UK TV rights for the short-form series, which is targeted to K6-12.  Co-produced by TV-Loonland, Studio Hari and French broadcaster France 3, the series revolves around a little pink disaster-prone owl that frequently ends up in pieces or in some predicament.

The UK’s Propeller TV is extending the Anime Network’s 2-hour programming block to air nightly on SKY Channel 195 (8-10p), with new content shown on weekends.  Propeller TV made the move after receiving a “tremendous response” to the Anime Network block during an initial 13-week debut period, which began in June.  Hosted by “Sci-Fi Guy” Stuart Claw and manga expert Emma Vieceli, Propeller TV’s Anime Network block line-up features a range of titles from various genres, including Coyote Ragtime Show, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Guyver: The Bio-Boosted Armour and Elfen Lied on weeknights, while new themed weekend blocks, Saturday Shoujo (Girl) Power and Sunday  Shonen Night, both of which will feature additional titles.

Bindi the Jungle Girl will makes its Canadian TV premiere on Discovery Kids Canada on Tuesday, October 2, 6:30, which will be the regular series time period. Hosted by Bindi Irwin, daughter of the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, the series underlines the importance of wildlife conservation by exploring a range of animals in their indigenous environments.  The show, which was originally designed to be hosted by Bindi and her Dad, includes appearances by Bindi’s Mom, Dad Steve (recorded prior to untimely passing) as well as Australia Zoo director.

4Kids Entertainment heads to MIPCOM 2007 with its new fantasy/adventure anime series, Dinosaur King (49×30′).  The HD series follows three friends, Max, Rex and Zoe, as they race around the world to uncover the secrets that bring dinosaurs back to life.  Dinosaur King will premiere later this month on the 4Kids TV Saturday morning programming block of Fox, while series will rollout internationally from September 2008.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Aardman Animations has inked a US-Canadian licensing and DVD rights deal with HIT Entertainment for several of its properties, including Wallace & Gromit, according to Variety.

Cartoon Network launches year two of its Rescuing Resources initiative, by hosting the second annual National Recess Week, September 24-28, in partnership with the National PTA, to coincide with the beginning of the new school year.  The goal of the effort is to remind parents, educators and policy makers of the benefits and importance of recess.  New campaign partners this year include Sports4Kids, Corporation for National & Community Service and Cox Communications.  Returning partners include Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Education Association, the National Association for Sport & Physical Education, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, Hands on Network, New Leaders for New Schools, Health MPowers, Sportime and the National Association of Elementary School Principals. Rescuing Recess is part of Cartoon Network’s Get Animated healthy lifestyles program, more information can be found at http://www.RescuingRecess.com.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Kirk Bloomgarden has been appointed EVP/Global Sales at DIC Entertainment.  He officially joins the company on January 1, 2008 and will be responsible for its TV, home entertainment and consumer products divisions and overseeing brand management.  Based in Burbank, Bloomgarden will report to Jeffrey Edell, President, and work closely with Andy Heyward, Chairman and CEO.  Bloomgarden had been with Copyright Promotions for 15 years, serving as its CEO for the last seven, and led the management buyout from Integrated Sports Media & Marketing, and its sale to DIC.

Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group ups Jason Root to SVP/Digital, Nick.com and Nickatnite.com.  In his new role, Root will oversee management and creative operations for Nick.com, while further developing the network’s other related sites (e.g. Nicktoonsnetwork.com, TurboNick.com, NickatNite.com) as well as series specific sites.  He will also be key in expanding Nick’s digital gaming initiatives, focusing first on 3DSlimeball on Nick.com as well as building multiplayer gaming into Nicktropolis.  Root, who had been VP/Nick.com, will continue reporting to Steve Youngwood, EVP.  He previously worked for the Disney Online Group and prior to that for Rabbit Ears Productions.
