09.12.13
Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 12, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Tuesday night’s telecast of the 2-0 victory by the U.S. Men’s National Team was a win for ESPN. The network delivered an average U.S. household rating of 1.4 for the qualifying match to tie the previous record for ESPN set last March, according to Nielsen Media. The telecast was seen by an average audience of 2.243 million viewers (P2+) and 1.641 million television households. On the local front, Columbus, Ohio, was the top market for the match telecast with a 5.1 rating.
CBS received good ratings news as well, with Sunday’s U.S. Open final between Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka delivering the highest overnight ratings for a U.S. Open women’s final in 11 years. The 4.9 Nielsen score was up 26% over 2012’s contest and also drew higher than the men’s final on Monday (which earned a 2.8 overnight rating). However, the Open men’s singles final also showed growth with a 22% rise over 2012 numbers.
It’s official, WFAN will don Yankee Pinstripes starting in 2014, effectively ending a long-running relationship with the Mets. The multi-year broadcast agreement with CBS Radio calls for Yankees games to be simulcast on both WFAN-Am 660 as well as WFAN-FM 101.9 next season. Both radio stations will carry all Yankees regular season and postseason games, as well as Yankees pregame and postgame shows and broadcasts of select Yankees spring training games. The company also nabbed Spanish-language Yankees broadcasts rights on a multi-year basis.
ESPN lined up broadcast plans for the 10 races that make up the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, starting Sunday with the GEICO 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. Nine of the 10 races will air on ESPN on Sunday afternoons, with the Saturday night, Oct. 12, race at Charlotte Motor Speedway airing in prime time on ABC. Coverage will include the return of NASCAR NonStop, a split-screen commercial format that will show the advertisement on the left side of the screen and a continuation of racing action on the right side. ESPN Deportes will also televise the GEICO 400 at Chicagoland Speedway live, joining the race at 3p. The company announced that singer Gretchen Wilson will be featured in ESPN’s telecasts of the 10 races.
NFL Network scored its best-ever Kickoff Sunday viewership with an average of 310,000 viewers for the day for shows that included the debut of the new GameDay First at 7a, NFL GameDay Morning, NFL GameDay Highlights and NFL GameDay Final. The channel’s audience peaked between from 9a-1p when it averaged 622,000 viewers for NFL GameDay Morning, making it the most watched regular season episode of that program in NFL Network history.
The NBA confirmed prices for this year’s League Pass, which offers most regular season games online or via their local MSO. The Premium full season package (with all teams) runs at $189 for early buyers before jumping to $199 after Nov. 5. The broadband-based 5-Team Choice Package costs $129.99 for early subscribers and $139.99 later on, while the mobile package to watch games will run at $49.99.
Golf Channel announced a record field of 1,207 players slated to compete in the 2013 Golf Channel Am Tour National Championships, which start on Sept. 21 at PGA West in La Quinta to mark the largest field in Am Tour history. Competitors range in age from 15 to 81 and will represent 47 U.S. States, Puerto Rico and Canada. The Championships will be divided into two events the Open National Championship, from Sept. 22-25, and the Senior National Championship (for ages 50+) from Sept. 27-Oct. 1. Golf Channel’s David Feherty, Kelly Tilghman, Terry Gannon, Roger Maltbie and Win McMurry will be on-hand at the national championships, attending welcome dinners and mingling with competitors. GolfChannel.com’s Brandon Tucker and Jason Deegan will post daily blogs and features on-site.
The West Coast Conference revealed its broadcast schedule with ESPN with a minimum of 36 men’s basketball games set to air nationally on the ESPN family of channels, including added coverage of the 2014 West Coast Conference basketball Championship in Las Vegas. The conference will help anchor ESPN’s Thursday and Saturday coverage with 22 conference games on deck. The season tips off on Nov. 11 with a pair of nonconference games featuring Colorado State/Gonzaga at 6p (ESPNU) and BYU/Stanford at 8p (ESPN2).
ESPN announced that in Beta Research Corp’s annual Cable Subscriber Study, cable and telco TV subscribers named ESPN as the top network for perceived value among network viewers. Overall, 20% of all respondents named ESPN among their Top Five Favorite Networks for the eighth consecutive year. Results from the study were generated from a national sample of 2,265 online questionnaires covering a survey area of 25 cable TV and telco TV system franchises across the country.
