Good morning, it’s Thursday, October 9, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

As the U.S. financial crisis spreads to foreign lands media giants are realizing that users both here and abroad are seeking news with a more global outlook. Beginning next spring NYTimes.com and IHT.com (International Herald Tribune) will combine forces to form a unified co-branded site giving both domestic and international readers the choice between a US or Global edition. An internal memo obtained by Cynopsis Digital explains that the Herald Tribune will maintain its own editorial staffs in Paris and Hong Kong but that “some hard decisions” will have to be made regarding job cuts. Since the NYTimes.com has been available around the world users have found IHT.com somewhat superfluous. While traffic at NYTimes.com has increased steadily over the past year, more than doubling to 19.4 million uniques in August per ComScore, IHT.com has struggled reaching just 2.5 million visitors during the same month. Meanwhile BBC.com is working on an overhaul for next summer that will include a U.S. version of the homepage tailored to American readers. The BBC will also begin providing local PBS affiliate sites with text and video clips from BBC World News next month, confirmed Richard Porter, Head of News at for the program. BBC World News is a twice-daily 30 minute news show KCET began distributing to PBS stations last week.


 
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Qualcomm’s mobile FLO TV service, available to AT&T and Verizon subscribers, is capitalizing on the two of the big fall TV events this year – the Presidential Debates and the primetime network premiers. Tuesday’s debate was delivered live on six FLO channels: NBC, CBS, Fox, MSNBC and CNBC, not to mention CNN for AT&T subscribers. Nickelodeon will also offer an election-themed Q&A for kids on the service on Oct. 12. FLO TV is also featuring its most comprehensive line up of prime time shows yet this month from NBC, CBS, Fox, MTV, Comedy Central.
 
EMI.com is launching a consumer-oriented digital download site featuring audio and video downloads from EMI artists. The company views it as more of a “learning lab” to study how users interact with and discovery new bands rather than as a legitimate rival to iTunes or Amazon, according to the FT.
 
Forbes.com introduced the Financial Adviser Network providing news, analysis, research and financial products for high-net worth investors (assuming there are still some out there.)
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
There’s more than one way to leverage an online audience. In a partnership with Apple and Amazon, YouTube added an e-commerce component to its site linking licensed music videos and game outtakes to the correct page on iTunes or Amazon.com where users can purchase the featured song or video game. YouTube plans to expand into more e-commerce opportunities including CDs, DVDs, concert tickets and other related products.
 
African American-targeted digital network Interactive One, a subsidiary of Radio One, announced a new social networking initiative integrating social networking features from Black Planet with its family of sites including NewsOne, entertainment-themed TheUrbanDaily and lifestyle site HelloBeautiful. Members can spark discussions and create communities around any of the sites as well as upload relevant content to the separate destinations. The Interactive One network of sites reaches an aggregate 9 million uniques/month according to the RadioOne.
 
Video clipping service 1Cast launched in beta as a perspective legal alternative to Redlasso.com, the blogger-focused news clipping site shuttered earlier this year to due copyright pressures. Striking agreements with news broadcasters and programmers, 1Cast offers licensed clips enabling users to create personalized video-clip playlists on specific topics, viewable via PC, smartphone or by using 1Cast’s embeddable widget.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Pandora
‘s indispensable iPhone app has helped the service double its growth rate from 20,000 new users/day to almost 40,000/day according to an interview with Pandora founder Tim Westergren on DWM. Pandora has about 1.5 million users on the platform to date.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Viacom expanded its legal action against YouTube requesting documents from early investors such as Sequoia Capital who contributed to the start-up then cashed in when Google paid $1.65 million for the video sharing site in 2006. Viacom lawyers intend to prove YouTube’s whole business model was built upon the premise of its users making copyrighted material available to the community without permission.
 
Time Warner Cable‘s Oceanic system in Hawaii, one of the first U.S. systems to launch VOD, deployed a new integration with ActiveVideo allowing viewers to interact with web content on their television sets acquired from RSS feeds. So far casual games from TAG Networks, home shopping from HSN and a selection of news, sports and kids content are available. The launch follows a system-wide trial of ActiveVideo during the 2008 Summer Olympics featuring DirecTV-style mosaic coverage of multiple channels of broadcast and cable Olympics programming, as well as Olympics news, photo albums, schedules and other content acquired via RSS feeds.


~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Google began wider testing of its in-game AdSense for Games system, optimized for casual games running on Flash. Beta users can display video, image, or text-based ads within their online games to earn revenue. Placements can be set at interstitial frames before a game, after a level change or as post-rolls following a session. Google will sell in-game ad placements directly to brand advertisers based on content and demographic information. The AdSense blog has a demo.
 
Multiplatform kids programmer Kabillion signed a deal with ad management system BlackArrow to deploy its video advertising platform within its broadband and VOD content. The BlackArrow system dynamically contracts, targets, traffics and reports on advertising inventory to maximize revenues from ad-supported video programming.
 
Ad network aggregator Glam Media launched a Luxury vertical featuring more than 35+ luxury goods and lifestyle sites including BlackBook.com, Luxique, Momist, Senora Cartera and Travels in Taste.


~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
With so many chasing the male 18-34 category online Break Media decided to break down the demo for advertisers with some new behavioral research conducted by Hall and Partners. This shouldn’t come as news; young men are online junkies who rely more and more on digital platforms for entertainment and socializing:

  • 69% say they can’t live without the Internet, versus just 31% for television
  • 63% have a smart phone and one in four use their mobile device to connect to the Web
  • 40% use the Internet for more than 22 hours a week
  • 36% say they can’t live without the Internet for socializing
  • 33% say they can’t live without online entertainment 

What’s a little more surprising is that they’re surprisingly tolerant of online ads:

  • 59% notice online ads
  • 47% have purchased as a result of an online ad
  • 35% like ads that allow them to play a game
  • 34% like online ads that allow them to participate in a contest

Oh, and they’re perspective isn’t all that far gone:

  • 79% would rather meet a woman out on the town than online,
  • 71% prefer a date with a hot girl to a poker game with the boys
  • 74% would rather have sex than surf the Web

 
Not surprisingly Sarah Palin was the top video search term last week on video search engine/discovery site Mefeedia. The SNL Skit parodying her interview with Katie Couric and the BarelyPoliticial.com send up The Real Sarah Palin also ranked as the top two forwarded videos for the week. Mefeedia relies on users to help sort through millions of video clips and TV shows asking them to create playlists of videos others can watch or contribute to.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Cincinnati-based Empower MediaMarketing hired Kristyn Pulford as Digital Strategist and Ilona Vijnik as Digital Analytics and Search Strategist. Kristyn joins Empower from Yahoo’s Southfield, Mich offices. Ilona hails from DMinSite Corp. in Cincinnati, an e-commerce catalog support provider.
 
Digital marketing agency Greater Than One has expanded its Greater Good program, hiring Nancy Engen as Director. The Greater Good program provides free web sites to centers who serve the underprivileged youth of local communities.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

Check out this ambitious new Sci Fi web series After Judgement that premiered yesterday created by writer/director Michael Davies with input from Taryn O’Neill, who also stars in the drama opposite Joel Bryant. It’s one of those post-apocalyptic yarns set in LA presented in an interesting non-linear way; viewers can learn about the complex backstory of the show by watching “recovered video footage” at beforejudgement.com, supposedly recorded at some time in the future by each of the show’s characters (after things have really gone to hell.) A third site, preventtheend.com, is in currently in the works to foster fan involvement. The production values and site design aren’t fancy but it has all the tools you need to virally spread the word about the show on your favorite platform. There’s a little Matrix, a dash of Lost, some Pulp Fiction and a bit of Omega Man thrown in for good measure – could be a potent mix in these troubled times.
