Research In Motion (RIM) is pushing back an upgrade for its PlayBook operating system until February 2012. It is the latest in a series of delays that have plagued the BlackBerry-maker since the poorly-reviewed tablet’s launch this past April. Criticisms of the tablet focused on the operating system’s inability to handle email, calendar and contact applications. RIM had originally indicated that an upgrade would come within 60 days of the launch, but then proceeded to push back the deadline to the summer months, and then to October. And now, RIM says it won’t even be available until next year. Adding on to the pile of bad news, it appears the new version will still be unable to support BlackBerry Messenger (BBM). No real reason is given except that RIM is “committed to developing a seamless BBM solution… and we’re still working on it.” Accordingly, RIM shares dropped 5.3%, adding to the total 60% freefall the company has suffered this year alone, reports Reuters.
Comedy Central is bringing The Colbert Report to Flipboard. “The new Colbert Nation section combines tweets from the show, from Stephen’s own Twitter account and video clips of recent episodes into a magazine-like experience optimized for tablets,” said Erik Flannigan, EVP of digital media for Viacom Media Networks.
CBS‘ 60 Minutes has a new standalone web application that is currently available to download in the Chrome Web Store. The app offers viewers a suite of video content culled from the TV show along with new original content from the 60 Minutes online series, 60MinutesOvertime.com. Users will be able to browse video segments by categories such as Newsmakers, Politics and Sports, amongst others, as well as by correspondent.
MTV Latin America’s Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas is bringing a Colombian horror web series to its U.S. viewers. Almas Perdidas, produced by 2&2 Productions, is a 13-episode series that follows the horror-genre staple of eight college students on a particularly nightmarish evening. The series allows fans to play a direct role in the fate of characters by picking between two different outcomes.
EQAL, a media company that builds influencer networks around brands and celebrities has unveiled a new personal online magazine for actress Molly Sims. It launches in conjunction with the premiere of Project Accessory on Lifetime, a show she hosts that is a spin-off of Project Runway. The site will be a hub for content and fan engagement focused on fashion, beauty, home design and entertainment.
Online ad tech company Vizu Corporation‘s brand effectiveness solution is now integrated across online ad company Firefly Video. The move is a part of Vizu’s Value in Video initiative that seeks to provide the digital advertising industry with the ability to measure the success and effectiveness of video advertising on a brand ad campaign in real-time, regardless of the method of video delivery.
YouSayToo is offering its blogging community another way to add some more monetization to their sites via Infolink‘s in-text advertising network and service. It’s another addition to YouSayToo’s blog promotion and monetization platform for bloggers and publishers (who power their blogs through WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, among others) who want to increase exposure and generate more revenue.
LiveU has inked a deal with Meredith Local Media Group to provide its live mobile uplink technology for Meredith’s television stations across the country. In essence, LiveU’s portable video-over-cellular LU60 solution will make it easier for Meredith’s news teams to broadcast live video from any location, removing the potential hassle of less-than-favorable cellular zones.
Cotendo, a cloud-based mobile and web acceleration services provider, and Citrix, an application delivery infrastructure provider, have unveiled the Citrix NetScaler CloudConnector for CDN within the Contendo Acceleration Cloud. The new solution enables easier end-to-end acceleration of interactive web, mobile and SaaS applications across mobile and non-mobile devices and networks.
11% of U.S. adults currently own a tablet of some kind, and 53% of tablet owners get their news via the tablet, according to the results from a survey by the Pew Research Center and The Economist Group as reported by Marketing Charts. In fact, news consumption ranks behind only web browsing (67%) and sending/receiving email (54%) in terms of popular activities on a tablet. It ranks ahead of social networking (39%), gaming (30%) and watching videos (13%).
MSG Varsity is jumping into the mobile game with the release of a customizable and free iOS app that offers viewers access to the Cablevision-owned network’s coverage of high school sports and activities in the New York tri-state area. Users can check updated scores, photos, game highlights and stories straight from their Apple mobile device. In addition, Optimum Online subscribers get the benefit of watching a live stream of the channel’s programming on-the-go.
Nokia made some news yesterday as it finally unveiled its two contributions to Windows Phone: the Lumia 710 and the Lumia 800. Aside from the meticulous manufacturing standards that are typical of Nokia phones, both products will come with two exclusive apps: Nokia Drive and Nokia Music, says TechCrunch. Drive will offer free turn-by-turn navigation while Music will allow users access to hundreds of streaming music channels.
