Good Morning, it’s Thursday, October 25, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

Microsoft emerged as the winner in a battle with Google to partner and invest in Facebook, committing $240 million for a minority stake that pegs the value of the social networking darling at $15 billion. The sky-high valuation is seen as a testament to the growth potential of online advertising, given that Facebook is expecting a profit of only $30 million on revenues of $150 million this year. The deal calls for an expansion of the relationship between the two companies, enabling Facebook to utilize Microsoft’s AdCenter platform to place ads globally. Facebook is planning to launch a new advertising network on Nov. 6 dubbed SocialAds that will reportedly offer advertisers detailed information about users’ likes, dislikes, friends and preferences.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Apple has found a way to help promote the movie side of its download business, currently stuck at about 1,000 Disney, MGM, Lionsgate and Paramount titles. Indie filmmaker Ed Burns (The Brothers McMullen) will release his latest movie, Purple Violets, on iTunes on November 20 as a pay-to-play download – the firsts feature-length film to debut on the platform. Wes Anderson’s 13-minute Hotel Chevalier, a prequel to The Darjeeling Limited, has registered over 400,000 downloads on iTunes so far, but that one is being offered for free.
 
MySpace struck a deal with game distributor Oberon Media to create a MySpace Games channel slated to launch in early 2008.
 
NBC Universal is rolling out the “Green is Universal” programming initiative cutting across multiple networks and platforms. Digital components include:

  • Green-themed user-generated content, slideshows, original stories, and video on MSNBC.com
  • Updates to iVillage’s iGo Green channel & gURL.com and the launch of the iVillage Forest on Nov. 1, a riff on the Almighty Forest where visitors can plant a virtual tree with each $5 donation

 
NBC Universal also announced a deal with AP to make AP Images the exclusive third-party distribution outlet for NBCU archival television photos. NBCU was the first major network to establish an in house unit and online photo archive in July of 2006 named the NBC Universal Photo Bank.
 
Getting back to the environment, HarperCollins Publishers and MySpace announced plans to publish MySpace/Our Planet: Change Is Possible, an environmental activism book created specifically for teens. The book is due out in March, but MySpace users are encouraged to submit ideas now for protecting the planet on the online MySpace OurPlanet community.
 
The Weather Channel Interactive will launch a mobile video service and WAP-based web site with partner Vantrix, featuring video weather reports from 100 different U.S. cities. Forecasts will be updated every 30 minutes, resulting in 5,000 new video downloads per day.
 
Daily financial news breaks from CBS’ recently-acquired Wallstrip and the afternoon programming block “Afternoon Rewind” have joined the CBS Mobile Network‘s lineup of programming this season, along with new CBS shows The Big Bang Theory, Kid Nation and Moonlight. The 24/7 network is available on V Cast Mobile TV from Verizon Wireless.
 
Lifetime Television and Telescope have teamed to deliver a mobile marketing campaign for Lifetime’s month-long 13th annual “Stop Breast Cancer for Life” program.  Mobile subscribers can text “Pink” to the short code L-T-I-M-E (58463) to send words of encouragement or names of loved ones affected by breast cancer. Submissions will appear both online at Lifetimetv.com and in text-to-screen on Lifetime Television.

Next New Networks announced a series of new distribution partnerships including YouTube, TiVo, blip.tv, Dailymotion, DivX Stage6, Joost, Veoh, Pando, Vuze, HandHeld Entertainment, and TVTonic.  Branded networks such as IndyMogul, Channel Frederator and Fast Lane Daily will now be available on a variety of platforms including TVs, computers and mobile devices.
 
Online video delivery company Limelight Networks launched a new service to transmit video clips, TV shows and movies in the HD format. Adobe Systems, Microsoft, Veoh Networks and Move Networks have announced support of LimelightHD.
 
Titan TV Network acquired the exclusive broadband rights to 3 Telco Productions series, Animal Rescue, Missing and Dog Tales, available for local TV stations to stream on their websites via the TitanCast player. It is Titan TV’s second such deal, following the acquisition of Jury Duty from Radar Entertainment.


~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
AT&T experienced its biggest single-quarter net gain in mobile subscribers, thanks in part to its exclusive deal with iTunes, adding 2 million net mobile subscribers (1.1 million of them iPhone users) during the Q3. AT&T is now the biggest wireless carrier in the U.S. with 65.7 million subs.

Nielsen announced a partnership with Google to integrate Nielsen’s TV ratings data with Google TV Ads platform. Companies purchasing TV Ads inventory will receive demographic details about who actually watched the ads, enabling advertisers to better customize and tweak campaigns. Viewing data will be culled from Nielsen set-top-box derived samples.
 
Strong online ad revenues helped The New York Times Company post positive net earnings for the Q3, increasing 57.1 percent to $28.1 million from $17.9 million in the third quarter of 2006. Internet revenues increased 26.5 percent to $79.7 million, including earnings from digital archives, NYTimes.com, Boston.com, About.com and other sites. Internet businesses accounted for 10.6% of the Company’s revenues in the third quarter versus 8.5% in the 2006 Q3.
 
Gorilla Nation was selected to exclusively represent the online ad inventory of comic giant Marvel Entertainment’s Marvel.com.

National Geographic Ventures CEO Tim Kelly will now serve as President of Global Media Group, a new division formed by National Geographic created to help improve coordination among editorial divisions including magazine and book publishing, television, film, music, radio and digital media. Tim will continue to report to John Fahey, President/CEO of the National Geographic Society.

One genre online video excels in is satire, and one of the better purveyors is JibJab Media, a team of artists recruited to create for the web by brothers Gregg and Evan Spiridellis. The company raised $3 million in additional funding this week from Polaris Venture Partners, so we should be able to look forward to more of their political parodies for some time to come. JibJab’s latest creations are online greeting cards called Sendables, including this Psycho-inspired Halloween card.
