Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/22/09
Good morning, it’s Thursday, October 22, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
A decade after the birth of Napster, the music industry is going into business with Google to offer a music-themed, rich media search service, according to a story broken by TechCrunch. Google will partner with online music services ILike (owned by News Corp.’s MySpace) and LaLa to offer free streaming songs and download-to-own MP3s accessible from ILike, LaLa and perhaps iTunes and Amazon’s MP3 store at a later date. (Users will be able to listen to a song only once all the way through for free.) All 4 major labels – Warner Music, Sony, EMI, and Universal Music – have licensed their catalogues for the initiative, expected to launch next week.

Social media marketing and monitoring just got a little easier with a new platform from Buddy Media, designed to simplify the process of creating and evaluating campaigns on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The application enables marketers to implement customized social apps, YouTube videos, coupons, virtual gifts, etc. on Facebook, or to build communities around trending topics on Twitter. Built-in analytics track clicks, brand engagement and other results by demographic. The platform is currently being trialed by digital partnerships Vivaki and MDC Partners.
Cablevision and Rainbow Media Advertising Sales announced the successful launch of its Optimum Select iTV advertising product. Major brands including Gillette, Benjamin Moore and Degree Body Mist from Unilever have been utilizing the option, embedded within 30-second spots airing across Optimum Select’s footprint of nearly 3 million digital homes.
UK-based B2B syndication company Myvideorights.com has launched an online video network made up of premium on demand shows distributed across the web. MVR’s Prime Content Network enables advertisers to select specific shows they want to advertise around, or to buy various packages of appropriate content, targeting by demographic group.
Today is the day that FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is expected to unveil a draft version of rules aimed at imposing network neutrality obligations on Internet Service Providers. House Republican Joe Barton (Texas) was the latest prominent official to voice concern over the measures this week, warning that new regulations will hamper investments in broadband infrastructure.
The ability to access music, photos, videos and other content through the television was the most desired “lean forward” interactive TV feature, according to Horowitz Associates‘ recently published “State of Digital and Interactive Television” survey, with 27% of respondents requesting the feature. Other popular features include the ability to access Google through their TV (21%) and the ability to interact with advertising, such as through customized coupons and requests for information (18%). Other interactive technologies/features tested in the survey were a Slingbox; the ability to watch YouTube through their TV; the ability to interact with TV programs (polling, voting, etc.); the ability to get fantasy sports stats via the TV while watching sports; purchasing products directly from a TV ad; and the ability to customize ads to their needs, tastes, and interests. The 18-34 year-old demo showed the strongest interest in all of the above.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM THE WALTER KAITZ FOUNDATION
Those words from Muhammad Ali capture the sense of purpose that has made diversity part of the business DNA for the 2009 Walter Kaitz Foundation Diversity Champions. Congratulations to Comcast Corp. and Turner Broadcasting System. Please join us at cable’s pre-eminent fundraising event to honor them, and to unite behind our industry’s commitment to diversity. With your support, we’re all champions.
One of the reasons why Twitter has fetched such high valuations is because of its inherent perceived value as a real-time search engine. Microsoft’s new Bing “decision engine” is now tapping into that value with a new Twitter search feature. It indexes and combs through the entire public Twitter data pool for relevant tweets, pushing up the results from power users or entries that have been re-tweeted. Most recent tweets are listed first, followed by “Top” (or most retweeted) Tweets. On the left hand column, additional related search terms will appear. This should be an indispensable tool for marketers who want to test the waters to see how the crowd is referencing their brand. It can also be used to get a handle on public opinion around current events, politicians, celebs or a movie that just opened on Friday. A quick search of The Yankees pulls up a shortened URL link to an item in the Washington Post about Mariano Rivera getting cleared of a spitball accusation. Bing is also working on adding a Facebook search feature; by indexing both services you’ve covered a pretty wide swath of the active online audience.
