The Galaxy Nexus from Samsung will be the first mobile device to run on Google‘s Android 4.0 (or Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system, with other devices to follow soon after. The new software comes with an enhanced interface that is designed to “be as smooth as butter,” according to Android chief Andy Rubin. Other features include the ability to toggle music straight from the lock screen, allowing developers to use the phone’s graphic processor for image-intensive tasks, and the coolest one of all: a facial recognition feature that can use the front-facing camera to unlock the phone. Furthermore, another big goal for the Android 4.0 is to get on as many platforms as possible, which Rubin corroborates by noting how Android already powers watches from Motorola and car dashboards from Mercedes, stressing to AllThingsD that virtually any screen can be better if it’s running on Android.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Amazon.com has announced an expansion of its existing licensing agreement with PBS Distribution that will bring PBS programming to Amazon Prime instant streaming. The content will be rolled out over the next several months and will increase Amazon Prime’s selection of instant videos to 12,000, or double the amount with which the service began.
 
Just in case your Big Mac wasn’t entertaining enough on its own, McDonald’s will be rolling out the McDonald’s Channel, its own digital-TV channel full of original content, including customized programming that will feature local news, youth sports coverage, human interest stories, entertainment previews and lifestyle segments. The channel will be introduced in the next couple of months and will expand to 800 chains in the south and California. If it’s successful, it’ll be everywhere.
 
Konami Digital Entertainment and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products released a partial song list of an upcoming karaoke video game for the Xbox 360 and Wii consoles based on the popular TV show Glee, called Karaoke Revolution Glee: Volume 3. The list includes Glee season 2 covers of recent radio hits from Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga and other artists.
 
Masters of Sound, an in-development online TV series that will shine a light on the work of music engineers and producers by bringing them together to discuss the creative process behind their work, recently signed popular LA radio personality Jim Ladd to host the program. The company is also currently exploring distribution deals with cable networks and/or Netflix.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
 

AdWeek revealed its list of six significant trends in digital advertising yesterday. They are as follows:

  • The end of the click-through rate as an effective measurement of an ad’s success is nigh.
  • The thin line between mobile and desktop is getting even thinner as Apple has begun to incorporate iOS features into OSX, while ad servers like Google’s DoubleClick begin to integrate their desktop and mobile offerings.
  • “Supercookie,” a file that allows websites to track users even after they delete it in their browsers. Hulu and MSN have come under fire for their use, but AdWeek does not expect the file’s use, which is legal, to stop.
  • Ad-tech consolidation becoming a real thing.
  • The emergence of HTML5 as the heir apparent to Adobe’s Flash.
  • According a report from ad intelligence company SQAD, specialized content can still be valuable and make money.

 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Claranet is providing hosting and management services for Channel 5‘s Big Brother website, which provides VOD, live updates and editorial content for the reality show that has doubled Channel 5’s total web traffic, and 2011 Big Brother Facebook app. The deal allows Channel 5 to handle unpredictable spikes in web traffic but still only pay for the capacity they use at any given time.
 
 

  ~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Apparently, it’s good to be Apple right now. The company announced this week that it has sold 11.1+ million iPads during its fiscal fourth quarter; an increase of 166% over the same time period last year, according to a report from Mobile Marketer. In fact, the iPhone also saw a spike as sales increased 21% to 17.07 million in the same timeframe. And finally, it also said 92% of Fortune 400 companies are either testing or deploying the iPad.
 
Moms are becoming a sizeable portion of Facebook users,
and will account for 17.9% of all U.S. social network users and 17.4% of all Facebook users as of 2011, estimates eMarketer, which defines a mom is a woman with a child under 18 years of age in the house who visits the site at least once a month. However, while social channel penetration is currently high, it also means the moms’ share on social sites is expected taper off as growth rates slow down. By 2013, eMarketer predicts 16.1% of all U.S. Facebook users and 17.1% of all U.S. social network users will be moms with children in the household.
 
Adspace Networks
has topped Nielsen’s Fourth Screen Network Audience Report, which measures audience exposures in out-of-home locations every quarter, in the Age 12+ category. Garnering over 215 million gross minute exposures over a four week period, it was also the media network’s first appearance in the report.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
The AccuWeather iOS 5 update integrates the service with the operating system and iCloud. Specifically, the app is synced across all Apple devices, offers a new Notification Center drop-down menu for quick access to alerts and updates, allows the user to share information via the new iOS 5 Twitter integration and even view the location of your contacts on the weather maps. The apps are free for the iPhone and iPod Touch, with free and paid ($0.99) versions available for the iPad.
 
Interactive entertainment company Ludia and FremantleMedia Enterprises have released Family Feud & Friends for the iOS, which translates the famous game show on to the mobile platform. The free game features social game play by allowing users to compete with Facebook friends.
 
WeMade Entertainment
has launched updates to its popular Heavy MACH: Assault and Battle iOS games, such as improved game play, a bigger selection of in-game items and the ability to purchase bonus items such as extra lives. In a bit of goodwill, while the games are now free, players who had already purchased the apps will be given an in-game credit of $2.99, the original purchase price.
 
Cheetah Software Systems
, a cloud-based provider of transportation logistics services, has unveiled Cheetah Mobile for its SaaS customers, an app on the Android platform that improves the efficiency of field workers by enabling them to connect with dispatch, customer service, management and customers in real-time via two-way messaging, ETA updates and/or POD verification (barcode scanning, signature capture, photos).
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Adkeeper, a free online service that allows consumers to engage with ads on their own time and terms, has made a series of hires for its senior-level executive team. MaryAnn Bekkedahl will be President; Steve Nieker will be President of Product and Technology; David Murnick will assume the role of Senior VP of Client Services and Operations; Jon Gregg will join the company as Senior VP of Advertiser Solutions; and Ravi Pillai, who will become Vice President of Publisher Relations.

Complex Media Network, the lifestyle and entertainment content publisher that caters towards young males, has made several new additions to its editorial staff including the appointment of Rob Kenner, founding editor at Vibe, as Senior Editor for Complex’s music channel.
