Cynopsis: Sports
10.17.13

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 17, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

After a Wall Street Journal report caused a media frenzy by reporting that the NFL was looking to double down with an additional package of Thursday Night Football games, the league was quick to state that there was no truth to the article. “Wondering where the idea of Thursday night doubleheaders came from? So are we. We have not considered this,” league spokesman Brian McCarthy wrote on Twitter, later adding “#nflthursday it’s not happening.”

On the Air

Game 3 of the ALCS handed FOX Sports with a 3.7/8 national household rating and 5.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen. The contest was up 37% compared to last year’s 2.7/6 (3.9 million viewers) for Game 3 of the NLCS on FOX. Through three games, the 2013 ALCS on FOX is averaging a 4.4/8 with 6.9 million viewers, ranking as the best for a League Championship Series since 2009’s ALCS featuring the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels.

Around the dial on TBS, the channel’s coverage of the NLCS averaged 5.8 million total viewers, up 2% versus Game 4 of the 2011 NLCS, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals. Overall, this year’s NLCS coverage is averaging a 3.2 household score with five million total viewers, up 23% and 22% versus 2011.

CBS Sports has tallied the numbers and, through five weeks of the 2013 SEC on CBS season, the network is averaging a national household rating/share of 4.6/10 and 7.3 million viewers. That marks the highest-rated and most-watched for SEC football games on CBS at this point in the season since the channel first began airing an SEC-anchored schedule in 2001. The rating/share is also up 48% over 2012 while viewership is up 49%.

NBCSN will showcase the final race of the season for the 2013 IndyCar Championship this weekend. Coverage of the MAVTV 500 IndyCar World Championships begins on Friday with qualifying at 7p and live race coverage set for Saturday at 8p. Leigh Diffey will call the race and will be joined in the booth this week by former drivers Townsend Bell and Wally Dallenbach. Reporters Jon Beekhuis, Kevin Lee, Marty Snider and Robin Miller will manage the pits.

ESPN detailed its new deal with Association of Surfing Professionals International yesterday. Exclusive domestic television rights are set to begin in 2014 and includes 11 recap programs annually of the WCT men’s tour and will integrate highlights from the women’s competitions as well. The deal marks the first television agreement in the history of professional surfing.

The 13-member College Football Playoff selection committee is official. Introduced to decide the tour team heading to the playoff after the 2014 season will be a slew of high-profile names headed by committee chair Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long. Also on the list are Pat Haden, Archie Manning, Condoleezza Rice, Oliver Luck, Tom Osborne, Mike Gould, Tom Jernstedt, Dan Radakovich, Mike Tranghese, Steve Wieberg, Barry Alvarez and Tyrone Willingham.

Adventure travel company EpicQuest is pairing up with Outside Television for a new series that will debut on Nov. 22.  The docu-drama series is produced by OneEyedBird Marketing and Entertainment, and follow the EpicQuest team of guides and clients to exotic locations around the world. To coincide with the launch of the new series, EpicQuest is launching a new portfolio of travel and adventure expeditions around the world and also unveiled a new website.

NFL Network series A Football Life will focus on the late, great Pat Summerall on Oct. 22 at 9p. The special will feature Summerall, aka the voice of the NFL, and his “transformation from an athlete to a broadcaster” and examine some of the personal battles and professional challenges he faced.
