Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/13/11

Good morning, it’s Thursday, October 13, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

The Blackberry network outage issues that have plagued Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa this week spread to North America yesterday. Research in Motion (RIM) confirmed the likelihood of outages for customers in North America while also stressing that they were working to restore services to customers. Caused by a malfunctioning back-up switch for its systems, which created a sizeable backlog of data that RIM has been working to clear, the outages have affected the ability for consumers to send and receive messages and emails and browse the web. Unfortunately for RIM, this crisis comes at a time when Apple is introducing the iOS 5 and iPhone 4S, bringing a direct competitor to Blackberry Messenger with its iMessage service. It remains to be seen how the issue will affect RIM’s reputation.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Sony has been selling digital copies of Bad Teacher, starring Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake, on iTunes, Amazon, Xbox and other platforms, two weeks before the movie comes out on DVD on October 18. According to Variety, this is the first instance of a major studio making a widely distributed movie available to purchase digitally in advance.

Discovery Communications is banding together with Microsoft and Best Buy for a broadband adoption and digital literacy effort called Connect to Compete, which was launched yesterday with the help of Pew Charitable Trust, reports Multichannel. As part of the initiative, Best Buy will deploy its Geek Squad agents in 20 cities to provide basic digital literacy training, Microsoft will develop an online training center and Discovery Communications will produce online educational content. FCC chairman Julius Genachowski said the initiative will “help meet the vital national challenge of connecting all Americans to broadband internet and its benefits.”

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Along with unveiling its native iPad app this week, Facebook has extended its platform into mobile by enabling features such as bookmarking, sharing and Facebook Credits in mobile apps on the social media channel, reports MobileMarketer. This will allow Facebook users to bookmark mobile versions of Facebook apps, and thus create better opportunities for app developers to be discovered.

Wal-Mart has launched close to 3,500 personalized “My Local Wal-Mart” Facebook fan pages that allow customers to receive offers and updates from their local Wal-Mart store. Users can visit the retailer’s Facebook page, and after entering their zip code, “like” nearby retail locations. After that, they’ll receive alerts from said locations twice a week.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

LinkedIn has purchased IndexTank, a San Francisco-based start-up that creates a real-time, hosted search engine service and will incorporate the technology into LinkedIn’s own search. IndexTank’s technology enables developers to build search-based apps without needing to host their own search software. This is the professional social network site’s second purchase in the last two weeks after it also bought Connected, an online address book service.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

According to Experian Hitwise‘s report on the search engine share figures during September 2011, Google dominated once again by grabbing a 66.12% share of all U.S. searches over the four weeks leading up to October 1, 2011. In fact, this marks the fifth time in the last six years where Google has seen an increase in search engine share from August to September. The combined Bing-powered searches came in second at 28.07%, while Yahoo! slotted in at third with a 15.27% share. Other interesting findings include:

  • One-word searches accounted for 25.32% (tops) of all search queries.
  • Search queries of eight or more words increased by 3%.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Discovery Communications, in partnership with Parragon Books, recently unveiled the “ Discovery Kids Sharks” iPad app, which was also just named the Apple “App of the Week.” The app helps kids learn about sharks via a slate of animated games and live-action footage taken from Discovery Channel’s library of Shark Week programming. The app is available for download for $4.99.

Meteor Games
, the game developer behind “Neopets,” and Peak Games have announced a partnership that will bring the “ Island Paradise” Facebook game to the 30 million Facebook users in the Turkish market. The completely translated version of the localized app is available immediately.

Tout, a social media technology company that lets users who have an iOS device or webcam shoot and publish 15-second video status updates, has extended its services to the Android operating system. The new free app follows recent enhancements to the service including a “reply” button and the ability to embed single Tout updates or Tout channels on Facebook and blogs.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Craig Weissman, former CTO of Salesforce.com, has joined Benchmark Capital, one of the backers behind Twitter, as its Entrepreneur-in-Residence. Weissman will focus on the enterprise and big data space at Benchmark.

Bestselling author and business consultant David Thomson has joined the Board of Directors at Sandvine, a provider of intelligent network policy control solutions for fixed and mobile operators. Known for his 7 Essentials Scorecard, which has been featured in The NY Times and USAToday, among other publications, Thomson will bring his expertise in business growth to help guide the growth strategies at the company.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

If you will allow it, I would like to geek out for a minute courtesy of TechCrunch, who alerted me to the launch of “Space Labs,” a project between YouTube and Lenovo that will allow Earth-based students (sorry aliens) to submit explanations of their science projects through YouTube for a chance to have them conducted in space. While I am unfortunately too old to get in on this, any student between the ages of 14 and 18 can submit their projects until December 7. During the first week of January, judges including Stephen Hawking and Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide will decide who had the best ideas. In March 2012, regional and global winners will be announced. Prizes for regional winners will include a trip to Washington, D.C., a Lenovo IdeaPad U300s Ultrabook, or a date aboard a zero-gravity flight. Sounds cool, right? Well get this, the two global winners (one from the 14-16 age bracket and one from 17-18 bracket) will get a chance to watch a live stream of their experiment being conducted in space and an opportunity to either train in Russia or watch his or her experiment blast off in Japan. Now, to figure out how to dupe people into thinking I’m 16 …
