Cynopsis: Kids!

10/11/07

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 11, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from from the pavilions, hotels, restaurants, benches, stairs, beaches, hallways and any other spare corner at MIPCOM, Cannes, France.

With the race to get projects into production in advance of the possible writers strike, Universal has given the go on Will Ferrell’s big screen version of Sid and Marty Krofft’s live-action Saturday morning show Land of the Lost (the original show ran in the early 1970s), per Variety.  The movie looks to be a different from the series in several ways, first the movie is intended to be a comedy, secondly, doesn’t look like it will star Marshall, Will and Holly (the scientist father, son and daughter), but rather a disgraced paleontologist, an assistant and a macho man tour guide.  The good news, Sid and Marty Krofft are producing the movie, along with Jimmy Miller, and yes … there will be Sleestacks!!!  Let’s just hope that the $100 million movie budget won’t ruin the look of the original Sleestacks – which happily were state-of-the-art Krofft.

MIPCOM 2007

Five days into MIPCOM (include MIPCOM Junior in that) and 2 gazillion loaves of bread, oh and lots of cheese, desserts, some more cheese and libation, here is what is happening in the kid/tween/teen/family arena …

BRB Internacional completes several more sales for its young-adult targeted HD 3D animated series, The Imp (65×90 seconds), here in sunny Cannes at MIPCOM.  Acquiring The Imp is, MTV in Portugal, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Sweden’s SVT.  The Imp is produced by Produced by Red Kite, Screen 21 and Televisio de Catalunya.

Hit Entertainment completed a couple of new deals over the course of MIPCOM this week:

  • Hit enters into a deal with Cocaban, a UK-based production company, and SAMG, the Korean animation studio, to develop and co-produce a new Boy K6-8 targeted animated series titled T5.  An action/adventure series, T5 revolves around a group of household pets that start the T5 Team, which turns into a winning racing team.
  • In the UK HIT signs a deal to distribute three kid shows from Spargo Productions, Willo the Wisp, Little Monsters and Microscopic Milton.

Spanish animation studio Zinkia and Virgin Play, the video games publisher, inked a deal this week in Cannes under which they will launch Hello Pocoyo!, the new, and first, console game based on the animated TV series Pocoyo.  Virgin Play’s v.2 Play label will oversee worldwide distribution rights for Pocoyo for Nintendo DS.  Slated to debut in Spain beginning of 2008, Zinkia is currently producing the console game at its Madrid studios.  Pocoyo is co-produced by Zinkia and Granada International in collaboration with Granada International and Cosgrove Hall.  Pocoyo also has a channel on YouTube as well as a mobile channel on Vodafone Live in Spain.

Bavaria Media has acquired rights to the girl-targeted series Heidi (26×30), according to C21 Media.  Slated to premiere this fall on Switzerland’s TSR, Heidi is produced by Dune Productions and Swiss Rita Productions for Television Suisse Romande and France 2.  The series has been pre-sold to a range of broadcasters including: PIK (Cyprus); BNT (Bulgaria); Prima TV (Czech Republic); SK/STV (Slovakia); TV2 (Norway); RTE (Ireland); and TVP (Poland).

This week DC Comics releases Captain Carrot and the Final Ark, the first title in the three-issue mini comic book series.  The series is written by Bill Morrison, drawn by Scott Shaw, inked by Al Gordon, colored by Tom Luth, lettered by Ken Lopez and edited by Joey Cavalieri.  Shaw describes the series as not a “kiddie comic,” but one that works on multiple levels like a Rocky and his Friends and The Simpsons, with a healthy dose of parody.  Captain Carrot and the Final Ark also features the Zoo Crew, a group of barnyard animal characters created by Shaw and Roy Thomas 25+ years ago.
