Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10.10.13

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 10, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING & DEALS

Comcast announced a partnership with Twitter for a feature called “See It,” to be embedded in NBCUniversal tweets starting in November, that allows customers to instantly tune in to live programming on the TV or from their smartphone or tablet. The initiative drives awareness of shows, and by boosting viewership, could drive ad revenue, too. “See It” can also be used to set a DVR or a programming reminder. Comcast wants to eventually migrate the See It button to other websites and apps so that any web conversations and coverage will take users directly to the shows.
In other words: This is one more step in diagnosing the true effect of social media on television, and TV’s effect on social media.

ESPN and AOL partnered up to offer AOL audiences ESPN video news, highlights and analysis from its shows like SportsCenter. The videos will be available on AOL.com, HuffingtonPost.com, and on the AOL On app or at on.aol.com/espn.

The A&E Network is rebranding and introducing its new tagline – “Be Original” – just in time for its tenth anniversary. The new brand identity (which includes a new on-air look and website redesign) launches Wednesday, December 11 during the 10p Duck Dynasty Christmas special.

CONTENT MEDIA

VEVO announced yesterday that theirs is the latest app to be available on the Samsung Smart TV, and will enable users to access more than 75,000 HD music videos and live concerts. Vevo Chief Revenue Officer Jonathan Carson told Cynopsis, “Over half of VEVO’s US audience is watching music video programming in the living room and on mobile/tablets. Connected TV platforms like Samsung’s and Apple’s are a perfect showcase for VEVO’s HD videos.”

GroupM Entertainment and Spin Media created a fashion web series called Stylist On Set. Celebrity stylist Johnny Wujek will host, travelling to different cities to dispense wardrobe advice. The show will launch next year on Spin’s sites, and Wujek will launch a site in conjunction with Spin this month.

Activision Blizzard of the popular Skylander franchise is releasing a new web series, Skylanders Boomcast, to promote its newest video game. The series will be hosted by Diary of a Wimpy Kid’s Zachary Gordon, and will preview the game’s latest news, art, and characters with the Skylander development team. It will run every week through the holiday season on Skylander’s YouTube channel.

Multi-platform network Crackle is starting the second season of its original series Chosen, which will include a new addition to the cast: actor Chad Michael Murray. Premiering in late 2013, the new season will consist of six half-hour episodes.

Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing its annual Holiday Programming Guide, which comes out on November 26 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has holiday-themed programming airing from November 27 through December 31, please send your listings to Lynn Leahey at [email protected] no later than Monday November 18. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lynn (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).

TECHNOLOGY

Samsung announced a new curved smartphone, the Galaxy Round. The phone features a 5.7-inch display, which is supposed to make it easier to use with one hand; it can be controlled by tilting the device. The smartphone will appear in the Korean market starting today. No word on when it will be available in the U.S.

Disney is now making it possible to feel an object on a touchscreen with its technology Tactile Rendering of 3D Features. In a nutshell, small electronic pulses are sent out that trick fingers into perceiving bumps and texture on an otherwise flat surface. The research is being presented at the ACM symposium this week in St. Andrews, Scotland.
In other words: If this works, it could be revolutionary, especially when it comes to mobile shopping: Imagine how much faster a consumer might buy a cotton shirt, for instance, if she can feel its material.

Apple is asking the tech world to save the date again, but this time for Oct. 22 when it plans to showcase new iPads. All Things D reports the new iPad is expected to feature a thinner and lighter design as well as an improved camera. The date also coincides with Nokia’s Innovation Reinvented conference where Microsoft will showcase the Surface 2 for the U.S.

RESEARCH

Ad agency Forward 3D’s latest research proves that men and women are still very different… at least in how they respond to online ads. The study found that women are less likely than men to buy something from an ad or brand-sponsored content they have clicked on, and will buy something after an average of nine clicks compared to men’s six clicks.

ADVERTISING

As previously announced last month, Pinterest‘s Promoted Pins paid advertising product were released into the Pinterest ether yesterday. Promoted Pins are similar to Promoted Tweets or Facebook Promoted Posts; companies can pay to show certain pins at the top of searches and feeds. Pinterest declined to disclose which advertisers are testing the pins.

Controversial file-sharing service BitTorrent is rolling out a new campaign to spark discussion on Internet freedom and privacy. The company bought billboard space in NY, LA, and San Francisco, and posted statements like “Your Data Belongs To The NSA,” or “The Internet Should Be Regulated.” The second phase began today, with a recasting of the same phrases, such as “Your Data Belongs To You,” or “The internet Should Be People Powered.” More of the campaign is expected to launch over the next year across multiple platforms.

Crown Media Family Networks, home of the Hallmark Channel, announced the expansion of its sponsorships unit to include digital sales packages and will use video advertising tech provider FreeWheel for its new platform. The digital push comes as the channel moves toward more original content with its latest Cedar Cove series.

Networks (both Cable & Broadcast) are faced with eroding ratings and ad dollars shifting from TV to Digital. That’s why Cynopsis is presenting a conference on what networks are doing  and what they need to do more of  to aggressively evolve to compete, and profit in this shifting landscape. Join us on October 17th as our experts share the latest business and advertising models for success at the Cynopsis Future TV Summit.
