Good morning, it’s Thursday, November 8, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

Both AOL and Time Warner Cable shed subscribers during the 3rd quarter, but Time Warner’s share price held steady as many of the cable losses occurred in markets the MSO entered recently through acquisitions. Revenues declined 38% to $1.2 billion at AOL, resulting from a 56% decrease in subscription revenues, offset only partially by a 13% increase ($61 million) in advertising revenue. Basic video subscribers decreased a net 83,000 during the quarter, with net reductions of 11,000 basic video subscribers in legacy systems and 72,000 in acquired systems.  AOL also confirmed it acquired online ad firm Quigo Technologies for an undisclosed amount.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
 

PBS is getting serious about web 2.0 distribution. The public broadcaster made a selection of programming including History Detectives, Nova, Scientific American and Teletubbies available on BitTorrent‘s P2P distribution platform and struck a deal with HD-compatible video site Vuze.com to offer similar titles for sale on a download-to-own basis.
 
CBS
is adding an Amazing Race page to Facebook utilizing the new Facebook Ads system. Trying to attract new fans through word-of-mouth referrals, the page will consist of interactive maps, trivia, contestant travelogues and a contest offering up a trip for two around the world.
 
mtvU and Microsoft launched a new multiplatform web series “Cause Effect” profiling standout student activists on campuses nationwide. Part of the Windows Live Messenger I’m initiative, it can be seen on mtvU.com or the new cause-themed Think.MTV.com.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Head of new media investment firm Tornante Co. Michael Eisner suggested writers are trying to get blood out of a turnip striking for a bigger slice of digital distribution revenue, as no one is making any money at it yet. To illustrate his point, made during a keynote conversation at a conference sponsored by Dow Jones and Nielsen, he admitted Vuguru’s debut series Prom Queen didn’t make a profit.
 
Video search engine Blinkx is planning to develop its own P2P online TV service to compete with the likes of Joost and Babelgum, reports The Financial Times, with a launch date of next March in mind. Blinkx intends to specialize in health, fitness and self help programming.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
HD channel launches and DVR costs weighed down DirecTV‘s quarterly profit, which decreased 14% to $319 million despite a net gain of 240,000 subscribers. DirecTV reported 16.5 million subs as of Sept. 30, 40% of whom have signed up for advanced services.
 
Ad revenues at MySpace increased 32% year-on-year according to News Corp’s 3rd quarter earnings call, as the company claimed 300,000 users are still joining the site around the world each day. Operating income at Fox Interactive Media was driven largely by search revenues, derived from an agreement with Google that went into effect on Jan. 2007.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
 

Google is getting ready to start beta testing a new in-game advertising system involving pre-roll and mid-roll inserts placed within Bunchball Games releases, reports GigaOM. Later in December Google will also begin to embed video-type ads in the cult game Psychonauts, available for PC, Xbox and PS2.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
About 30 million or one-quarter of US TV households have at least one television capable of receiving HDTV programming, according to a new study by Leichtman Research Group, the highest estimate so far of HDTV penetration. Yet confusion still remains in the marketplace. While over 75% of HDTV owners believe they are watching high-def programming, LRG estimates only 57% are actually getting it. Just 41% of HDTV owners were adequately educated about the process when they made their purchase.

Comedy Central upped Paul Beddoe-Stephens to VP/Digital Media. He will report to Erik Flannigan, EVP/Digital Media, and continue to be based in New York.
 
Josh Rosenberg
will serve as VP of M Booth & Associates’ new digital marketing arm FirstWorld Digital.
 
Interpublic Group’s 10-second spot specialist PIC-TV underwent a name change to the PIC Media Group to reflect a new emphasis on broadband and mobile content. Steve Berger will continue to serve as President and CEO of the agency.

Online animation network Aniboom.com threw its hat into the political ring with Race for the White House, an original animated comedy series spoofing candidates Clinton, Giuliani, McCain and Obama’s campaigns. It also has an entertainment tie in – each webisode takes the form of a show or a movie such as 24 or Star Wars. The show is written by Late Show with David Letterman veteran Gabe Abelson, who cut his teeth in the political arena writing speeches for Bill and Hillary.
