Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 7, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The Big 12 Conference entered a multi-year agreement with digital providers NeuLion and Campus Insiders in an effort to enhance the conference’s digital presence and access for fans online. The alliance will see NeuLion continue to host the Conference’s digital platform through the 2016-17 athletic season, including Big12Sports.com as well as showcase the league through mobile applications, live streaming of events and a Big 12-branded affiliate video portal. Campus Insiders enters the fray as the newest Big 12 partner, where the company will assist in the facilitation of the Big 12 Digital Network powered by Campus Insiders. The network will showcase the competitions, coaches and student-athletes in every Big 12-sponsored sport. In addition, Campus Insiders will staff a new Big 12 Digital Network Correspondent position.
The Cubs long run at WGN-TV could soon be coming to an end. The Chicago Tribune reports that the team has exercised an option to exit their broadcast contract with WGN-TV following the 2014 season, notifying the outlet that they now have 30 days to meet a higher assessed fair market value for the broadcast rights or the team would open negotiations with other media. The team first linked up with WGN-TV in 1948.
As part of ESPN’s fifth annual America’s Heroes: A Salute to the Troops Presented by USAA initiative for Veterans’ Day 2013, the company announced that it will televise the Armed Forces Collegiate Boxing Invitational on Sunday at 11p on ESPN2 and Monday, Nov. 11, at 11p on ESPNU. John Brickley and Larry Rawson will call the action. The event features boxers from the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
BTN and BTN2Go’s men’s basketball coverage launches on Friday with two contests. Game one will see St. John’s face Wisconsin in Sioux Falls in the first college basketball game to be played at Heritage Court at Sanford Sports Pentagon. Eric Collins will call the game beside new BTN analyst Stephen Bardo. Immediately following the Wisconsin game, Nebraska hosts Florida Gulf Coast to mark the first BTN game in the new Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. Tom Hamilton will have the call with analyst Jim Jackson.
Sportsman Channel is launching a programming initiative focusing on key U.S. holidays and special events designed to celebrate the country’s freedom and independent lifestyle, dubbed Sportsman Channel’s Salute to Service. Programming includes an all-day programming schedule on Nov. 11 from noon to 7p on which every program will have a connection to the military. Hosted by Larry Vickers, Sportsman Channel’s Veterans Day Salute will pay tribute to veterans, and include “soldier salutes” courtesy of the Department of Defense from active military serving throughout the world.
The Miami Marlins forged a partnership with Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Miami that will make 940 WINZ-AM the official English radio broadcast home of the Marlins, beginning with the 2014 season. The deal includes live game broadcasts, pre- and post-game analysis, as well as daily game recaps with coaches and players. In addition, The Hot Stove Report, a half-hour long show covering Marlins and Major League Baseball news, will air each weekend during the off-season.

ESPN debuted two new spots from its ESPN NBA RV campaign, featuring Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry and NBA commentator Mike Breen. The first spot, dubbed “Notebook” showcases Curry and Breen alongside Warriors head coach, and former ESPN analyst, Mark Jackson. As they store Jackson’s luggage from his ESPN RV days, the guys find his old draft notebook containing some unflattering notes on Curry. The second spot features Breen and Curry eating burgers in the RV as they coincidently activate the vehicle’s “clapper” system.
Fox Sports 1 has reportedly been offering “make-goods” through high-profile sports events on FOX to compensate for shortfalls on the network, according to Ad Age. The report states that some advertisers on Fox Sports 1 are being offered compensated time in Fox broadcasts, via college football games as well as pre-game and post-game NFL programming and the World Series.
Integrated marketing agency CSE announced that the company was broadening from its base of sports personalities and will begin to represent on-air anchors, personalities, reporters and journalists from the worlds of News and Entertainment. CSE has named Traci Wilkes Smith to oversee the practice in the newly-created position of Vice President of Broadcasters, News and Entertainment. Wilkes Smith comes to CSE from Willinger Talent Agency.
Digital & Technology
ESPN and the Big West Conference are collaborating on a mobile production facility that will allow the Conference to produce as many as 60 events from five Southern California member institutions annually for ESPN3. Broadcasts will include full ESPN production standards, including graphics, replay and on-air crew.
ESPN named Stephanie Druley as VP, Production for College Networks, where she will now oversee the launch of the SEC Network, which is set to debut August 2014. Druley previously served as VP, Production for Longhorn Network. As head of production for SEC Network, Druley will oversee the production of at least 450 live televised SEC events planned for the channel’s first year and a range of original content and studio programming. Her responsibilities will also include oversight of all on-air content and network talent.
beIN SPORT named Antonio Briceno as Deputy Managing Director of beIN SPORT for North America where he will oversee operations, production, marketing, sales and distribution efforts for beIN SPORT and beIN SPORT en Espanol, as well as for its authenticated-streaming service.
