Cynopsis: Sports
11.29.12

Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 29, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The conference realignment dominos continue to fall was the ACC unanimously voted to accept the University of Louisville as its newest member, replacing Maryland. “With its aggressive approach to excellence in every respect, the University of Louisville will enhance our league’s culture and commitment to the cornerstones we were founded on 60 years ago,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “The University of Louisville is an outstanding addition to the Atlantic Coast Conference and I commend the Council of Presidents for continuing to position our league for the long-term future. If you look at what has been done over the last 15 months, the ACC has only gotten stronger with the additions of Louisville, Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse.”

Meanwhile, Conference USA is reportedly backfilling from its Big East raid by snagging two Sun Belt teams, Florida Atlantic and Middle Tennessee State.

Thanksgiving NFL weekend ratings are final, with FOX’s Redskins/Cowboys game pulling in 28.7 million viewers to ranks as the most-watched show of the fall TV season, according to Nielsen. CBS’ Thanksgiving game featuring the Texans/Lions) finished with 27.3 million viewers, and NBC’s Patriots/Jets Thanksgiving night game delivered 19.2 million viewers for the channel to score as the most-viewed primetime Thanksgiving game in history.

Meanwhile, NBC’s telecast of Sunday Night Football drew 20.9 million viewers despite the Giants blowout win over the Packers, up 3% for the equivalent game in 2011. The household rating of 12.6/19 for Sunday’s game was up 2% from last year’s Week 12 SNF game.

In college football, ABC can officially brag that Saturday’s Notre Dame/USC showdown scored as the most-viewed regular season college football game since 2006 and the network’s most-viewed Saturday Night Football game ever. The matchup averaged 16,059,000 viewers; 10,707,000 households; and a 9.4 rating. The network also lays claim to the second most-viewed and highest-rated college football game of the weekend, averaging 8,466,000 viewers; 5,802,000 households; and a 5.1 rating for its afternoon broadcast of Florida besting Florida St.

Speaking of Notre Dame, NBC is offering up a special look back at the Fighting Irish’s season and look ahead to the team’s upcoming appearance in the BCS National Championship on Jan. 7. Undefeated: 2012 Notre Dame Football Season in Review airs Saturday, December 22 at 2p on the network, hosted by Liam McHugh. The team has been kind to the network this season. Notre Dame Football on NBC scored its most-watched season in seven years, averaging 4.4 million viewers and a 2.8 household rating for their seven games on NBC, up 69% and 67%, respectively, over 2011 according to Nielsen.

FOX Sports is offering a double dose of Gus Johnson this weekend, with championship weekend on deck. First up will be the Pac-12 Conference Football Championship pitting UCLA and Stanford at Friday, with Johnson, analyst Charles Davis, reporter Julie Alexandria and on-field analyst Petros Papadakis call the game. The foursome will then head east for Saturday’s Big 10 Championship, featuring Nebraska and Wisconsin from Indianapolis.

MLB Network is set to air over 25 live hours of coverage from the 2012 MLB Winter Meetings headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee next week with special editions of Hot Stove, Intentional Talk and MLB Tonight. Coverage begins Sunday at 8p with a live MLB tonight preview. MLB Network will also televise the 2013 National Baseball Hall of Fame Pre-Integration election results announcement on Monday, December 3 live at 11a.

ESPN has the MLS Cup 2012 ready for the weekend, pitting Landon Donovan and the Los Angeles Galaxy against Houston Dynamo Saturday at 4:30p. The contest will also mark David Beckham’s last competitive match with the Galaxy. Coverage of the game will include 19 cameras, including two super slo-mo cameras, a steadicam, a Jib cam, two POV cameras, and the Goodyear blimp, with Adrian Healey and Taylor Twellman handling microphone duties in the MLS Cup debut.

FSMG Co-President & COO Eric Shanks joined UFC President Dana White on a conference call with reporters to hype up UFC on FOX on Dec. 8. Shanks noted that the relationship between the two companies was poised to grow in the near future. “We knew that this relationship is going to grow and get bigger every year,” he said. “The first year was really to get the mainstream advertiser base behind it and also promote the UFC within the likes of NFL and Major League Baseball and college football and make it part of a big FOX Sports portfolio. We’ve done that. This relationship is going to look different over the next, two years, three years and it’s only going to get bigger because we’re going to get much more economic support from the advertiser base behind it. When that happens, UFC is going to be one of the top sports in the U.S. on television.”

NASCAR announced the 2013 schedule for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, including the series’ first race on dirt as well as its inaugural international event. On July 24, the trucks will make their dirt debut at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Meanwhile, the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ont. will host its inaugural truck event on Sept. 1, becoming the first road-course track for the series since 2000. The season begins on Feb. 22 at Daytona.
