Good morning, it’s Thursday, November 29, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

Cowboy fans and Green Bay Packer backers are up in arms on the eve of their teams’ biggest game of the year. Tonight’s contest between 10-1 Green Bay and 10-1 Dallas will be unavailable in a majority of Wisconsin and Texas counties due to the ongoing dispute between the NFL Network and major area MSOs including Time Warner Cable and Comcast. The latter decided to place the NFL Network on a digital tier after it drastically upped its carriage fees to 70 cents/subscriber. Time Warner has offered to make it a premium option, but neither seems close to adding the channel to its basic line-up. The NFL Network actually asked the FCC to step in earlier this month to force Comcast to play ball.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
 

CondeNet signed an advertising and distribution agreement with YouTube, allowing the magazine publisher to sell ads to its videos posted on the video sharing site with the two parties splitting the proceeds. Traffic to CondeNet’s 8 sites including food site Epicurious.com, fashion site Style.com and social news-aggregation site Reddit.com are up 16% over last year, according to comScore, following similar distribution deals with Yahoo and MSNBC.
 
Fans who can’t pick up tonight’s game can go to NFL.com and NFL Mobile on Sprint to torture themselves and view live “look ins” of the action. The feature will break in live :15 and :45 minutes past each hour and each time either team has the ball in the red zone (inside the opponent’s 20 yard line.)  The look ins as well as an interactive studio-produced show will be available for all 7 of the remaining games scheduled to be broadcast by the NFL network this season. 
 
HBO is celebrating the downtrodden NFL fan with “Fan Life,” a series of 6-8 minute shorts to be distributed across HBO’s digital platforms including HBO.com, HBO Mobile and HBO Podcasts. Seven videos are already completed and an eighth testimonial will be chosen from those submitted on HBO’s Inside the NFL microsite.
 
The History Channel launched Power of 68.com, an online promotional companion to its Dec. 9 1968 With Tom Brokaw special inviting viewers, affiliates and sponsors to submit their own photos and videos from back in the day.  A music trivia widget asks users “Where Were You?” at crucial moments. An online game entitled “Lady Madonna’s Closet” showcases fabulous threads from the period. B&N.com, Tivo, InMotion Entertainment and Pandora.com are partnering.
 
SCI FI Channel and SCIFI.com spun off its tech blog DVICE into a separate consumer oriented site focusing on the latest and greatest tech gear and gadgets. The site will produce its own weekly broadband show hosted by MTV.com personality Vanessa Rae, where fans get to see real life demos of gizmos on their wish lists. NBC Universal’s Peacock Productions will co-produce.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Maven Networks has signed an agreement with Gannett to distribute and monetize video content from its network of 150 websites. The Maven Internet TV Platform will syndicate and create new types of advertiser inventory for its local TV, newspaper and national sites. Maven also syndicates content for Hearst, Fox News and Sony Pictures.
 
Blockbuster launched a Facebook app called MovieClique allowing users to search for movies, rate and review them and create viewing lists to share with friends. Story, cast and production information appear with each profile created. The rental chain is also in talks with mobile carriers to launch a mobile phone viewing application, according to comments made by CEO James Keyes at the Reuters Media Summit.
 
Rumors are flying that professional-oriented social networking site Linkedin is the target of an acquisition by News Corp. A possible fit with the soon to be acquired wsj.com is being discussed.


~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Tivo announced a partnership with German PC solutions provider Nero integrating its celebrated DVR interface with Nero’s PC-based TV tuner. Tivo announced Q3 revenues of $58.3 million (up 11% from last year) and narrowed net losses of $8.2 million. Overall subscriptions fell from 4.4 million to 4 million, partly due to the steady loss of DirecTV customers. (The satellite provider no longer offers a Tivo option.)

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
 

Hearst-Argyle Television struck an agreement with Google to give its 30+ local station sites the right to resell Google AdWords to small and medium sized businesses within their local markets. The company will share in the per-click through revenue generated from traffic initiating from its sites. Local search is one of the fastest growing segments of internet advertising, expected to climb from $1.9 billion in 2007 to $9.3 billion in 2010 according to Yankee Group estimates.
 
A day after announcing NBCU as a client, Tivo also signed Carat to its Stop||Watch ratings service, giving the ad agency access to its panel based sample of live and time shifted viewing behavior data.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~
 

By all accounts Cyber Monday topped the charts this year:

  • Nielsen reported a 10% increase in traffic over last year with consumer electronics and toys/videogames experiencing the most growth at 72.5% each
  • ComScore pegged e-commerce sales at $733 million, an increase of 21% over 2006
  • Hitwise had traffic up 26% y/y with Amazon.com leading all e-tailers
  • Service provider Akamai said retails site visits peaked at 4.6 million/minute, an increase of 1 million visits/minute over last year
