Good morning, it’s Thursday, November 20, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
 
Two more print publications are going the way of the dodo bird but publishers hope to keep their perspective brands alive online. Time Inc. is shuttering Cottage Living magazine, according to the New York Post, as part of a massive cost-saving effort. The company also laid off 250 of its staffers in step one of a planned 600-job reduction. Separately, Ziff Davis announced it was discontinuing the print version of PCMag to focus on its network of PC-related websites built around PCmag.com, including blogs such as AppScout and podcasts including Cranky Geeks. Ziff plans to add more interactive features to the digital edition, adding slideshows of new products as well as video demos.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
And now for something completely different. The Monty Python troupe launched its own channel YouTube featuring about 24 collections of clips, outtakes and interviews with the gang. And instead of pretending its all about getting to know its audience, the group admits the channel is a direct ploy to sell Monty Python DVDs and merchandise, utilizing YouTube’s new partnership with Amazon.
 
The WWE made some wholesale improvements to its website rolling out a new social network geared at enabling users to interact with the league’s oversized galaxy of stars. Visitors can create profiles, upload images and conduct live chats with the wrestlers. WWE.com also introduced a new video player last month to showcase recaps, interviews and web originals, featuring HD 16×9 playback. The company says that video viewing has spiked 77% since the player was launched 3 weeks ago, with video ad impressions up 95%.
 
CBS Interactive’s TV.com unveiled a new HD Gallery showcasing clips and full episodes of (mostly) CBS shows. The site also added the ability embed clips on social networks and other third party sites.
 
Rainbow’s VOOM division has launched a colorful comics-inspired website to promote its latest 1080i network MonstersHD. The site will stream George Romero’s Day of the Dead and Robert Kurtzman’s The Rage on Thanksgiving Day. Check out the “Gruesome Twosome” teasers while you’re at it.
 
There’s also good fun to be had at the new Batman: The Brave and the Bold site created by Warner Bros. Animation group for CartoonNetwork.com. The Flash interface allows kids to play games, draw pictures and drag-and-drop characters into custom printable scenes.


~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Online TV clipping service 1Cast emerged in private beta yesterday as a legal alternative to the RedLasso service, shuttered earlier this year due to legal complaints from the networks. So far video from the AP, AFP, CNBC, Reuters and Canada’s CBC is accessible but search can only be conducted by using metadata-embedded keywords. (RedLasso was invaluable to bloggers because it featured speech-to-text search, which pulled up even passing mentions of persons of interest.)
 
Austin, TX-based ON Networks launched its latest show Smart Girls at the Party with the goal of inspiring young girls and their moms. Creator Amy Poehler of SNL fame interviews talented young subjects with her friend Meredith Walker, former senior producer for Nickelodeon’s Nick News, and former head of talent for SNL. Mattel’s Barbie has signed on to sponsor.
 
Call for Content: Dailymotion launched a online video contest to support One Laptop Per Child’s Give One, Get One campaign. Upload an original commercials for the campaign to help promote the cause and the winning commercial will be aired on a major network/cable TV channel during the period of December 15th to December 31st.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Roxio media player manufacturer Sonic Solutions agreed to purchase long beleaguered online movie portal CinemaNow for an undisclosed amount. The companies had been working together on a studio-approved solution to allow downloaded movies to be burned to DVDs using a Sonic’s Qflix encoding system. CinemaNow has been around since 1999 and has received more than $40 million in funding over the years from investors including Echostar and Lionsgate.
 
The FCC issued a second report establishing multiple rules for devices that will operate within secondary broadcast “white space” spectrum. The specs include access limitations and provisions for testing and registering devices. 
 
Shares of Yahoo dropped nearly 20% on Wednesday after Steve Ballmer reiterated for the umpteenth time at the company’s annual shareholders meeting that Microsoft is no longer interested in acquiring the company. However, Mr. Ballmer did express interest in a possible search deal.
 
The governor of Tennessee declared war on illegal music file sharers, signing a bill into law last week aimed at thwarting music piracy on the state’s college campuses. While the RIAA celebrated the win in a press release, digital watchdog group EFF ridiculed it, pointing out how easy it would be for students to circumnavigate expensive “infringement suppression” technologies.
 
Meredith Corp. acquired a minority stake in the social networking community of sites Real Girls Media Network, operator of UGC-powered DivineCaronline.com. Folding in Real Girls’ traffic places Meredith into the top 5 of women’s networks according to both ComScore and Quantcast with 15 million uniques per month.
 
Sometimes recessions are good for business. Video search engine Blinkx is taking another stab at acquiring pay-per-click vertical ad network MIVA for a cash offer .55/share – less than half the price it offered for the company over the summer.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Video ad management platform BlackArrow released a new set of tools allowing publishers and distributors to more easily define ad avails around video content. The additions extend the company’s AdMap suite, which displays user-defined ad insertion points in a graphical interface. BlackArrow also added support of the Adobe Media Player to its list of distribution platforms this week, enabling ads to be served directly into syndicated Adobe programming.
 
Online video platform provider Ooyala also upgraded its video advertising system enabling easy ad integration with major ad servers and ad networks including YuMe, Tremor, Doubleclick, Lightningcast, and Google AdSense for Video.
 
Meanwhile contextual ad company ContextWeb added the ability to target Spanish-language speakers by adding in-language keyword targeting to its solution. ContextWeb has hired Time Warner’s Joe Kutchera as Director of Spanish-Language Markets to run the operation.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
The iPhone is now the #1 device in the world according to AdMob‘s most recent Mobile Metrics report with 4.1% share of requests in October. Since AdMob launched its ad units for iPhone sites and applications, iPhone requests have increased from 28 million in July to 236 million in October. In the U.S. the iPhone is still #2 behind the Motorola RAZR.

President of the CBS Television Digital Media group Jonathan Leess is stepping down at the end of year according to memo circulated to staffers, a post he held for more than 4 years.
 
NBC Universal hired Nicole Paolini-Subramanya to the TV Networks Distribution division in the role of VP/Business & Legal Affairs. Effective immediately, Nicole will support the TV Networks and Digital Distribution divisions in drafting and negotiating multi-year distribution agreements. She will report to Jodi Brenner, SVP/Business & Legal Affairs, TV Networks Distribution.


 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Infomercials have an online rival. Honeyshed is a new online shopping/entertainment network driven entirely by product placement. (It’s been called QVC meets MTV.) Users can choose from a mix of channels or categories to watch young beautiful actors goof about the latest and greatest gadgets, fashions, DVDs or albums. Flick Picks is sort of a straight “Men on Film.” Social elements include rating, review and share options. Each product can be purchased directly from the site or users can register to participate in the “stash” promotion, choosing products they want to win. The concept makes a lot of sense – the big challenge for video producers on the web is to convince sponsors how much more valuable their ad experience is than a simple banner impression. This is a pretty easy argument to make when the show is about the product itself. Honeyshed CEO Steve Greifer, former head of promotions for Digitas, has a handle on how to speak to marketers about quality brand exposure. He equates selling the site to striking the many affinity marketing deals he has packaged. “Shopping is just as much of an affinity as golf or tennis,” he says. “Honeyshed treats shopping as a fun activity.” The real challenge will be to get fickle gen Yr’s to get hooked on the characters. The company is already syndicating the video out to the usual venues in the hopes of creating a little viral magic.
