Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good Morning, it’s Thursday, November 1, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Google has a name for its open application programming interfaces (APIs) it hopes will challenge Facebook’s dominance in incubating cool new applications. The first wave of OpenSocial APIs were posted yesterday, providing the code necessary to write widgets that access user profile data and friends lists from YouTube, AdSense, Sitemaps, Feedburner and dozens of other Google applications for use on other sites. (In that sense, Google has opened its doors even wider than Facebook whose applications work only within the Facebook environment.) Google’s Orkut, hi5, iLike, Linkedin, Ning and Slide are among the social networks supporting OpenSocial out of the gate. Facebook and MySpace are not.
Pushing ahead in the digital music space are Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and … Bob Dylan? Yes Dylan is conducting a user generated video contest with Sony BMG and YouTube, asking fans to submit renditions of “Like a Rolling Stone.” The best bits, chosen by Bob’s editing team, will be spiced together to create a single video. It seems only the visuals matter, as Dylan himself will be doing the singing.
The Nightline webcast relaunched on ABCNews.com, ABC News Now and iTunes, anchored by Nightline correspondent John Donovan. Look for more video, archived footage from past shows and new interactive features.
FoodNetwork.com is now offering full episodes of The Next Iron Chef online for the first time. New episodes will be available every Monday, after airing on Food Network on Sundays at 9 pm ET/PT.
VH1 and the Broadcast Film Critics Association launched VH1’s eCritic, an online contest to find the best amateur film critic. Film aficionados are encouraged to upload a video of themselves reviewing a movie to VH1.com. The winner, determined by user voting, gets to serve as an honorary critic for the Critics Choice Awards airing live on VH1 on Jan. 7, 2008.
JewishTVNetwork.com unveiled its own user generated video channel this week, kicking things off with a contest seeking the funniest Bar/Bat Mitzvah. The “most hysterical and embarrassing” video will receive $10,000.
Cynopsis Weekender College Edition returns on November 15th! Here’s how it works — if you’re currently a college student here or abroad, submit to Cynopsis your essay of 350 words or less on any topic relating to television. If your essay is one of four chosen as the most insightful, original, humorous and/or well-written, it will included in a special College Edition of Weekender. All four winning essay writers are awarded $350. Entries must be emailed no later than Friday, November 9th to me at [email protected], subject Weekender College Edition. Students – be sure to include your name, age, college, college year, and major (if you know it), and how you can be contacted. Good luck!
Truveo expanded its online video search presence internationally, opening up new online portals in France, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Spain, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. The sites will index video from Europe and Asia’s most popular video sites including L’Equipe from France, Berlin TV from Germany, KBC from Korea and BBC from The UK. Truveo plans to launch additional video search sites in Australia, Brazil, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, Russia and Turkey in the coming months.
The UK’s top social networking site Bebo is developing another interactive serial with Endemol called The Gap Year (referring to the year European students take off between high school and college.) The weekly show, scheduled to run from January through June of next year, follows 6 European students as they travel around the globe, with Bebo users chiming in to determine where they should go next.
UK-based white label video company Mydeo is powering a new user generated video site launched by Best Buy that charges users about $7 for hosting 100 minutes of personal video for sharing on web sites, blogs or via email. Best Buy also took a minority stake in the company.

Bilingual young Latino-targeted digital multicast network LATV launched a new interactive text-to-screen application for two of its most popular music video shows. The Impulse application, powered by Blue Frog Media, enables viewers of Videos Por Favor and Videos a la Cart to submit text messages via mobile phone that appear directly on screen, allowing individual stations to build promotions and prizes around the live show.
Triple play broadband provider Windstream Corp. announced an agreement to offer Tivo DVR services to its subscribers beginning during the first half of 2008. Windstream is a rural-focused provider that operates approximately 3.3 million access lines in 16 states.
AOL unveiled a new user interface akin to a digital do not call list that will allow users to opt out of targeted ads on its sites. The system, launched to coincide with a series of meetings the Federal Trade Commission is holding on how behavioral targeting affects consumers, will also encourage users to enter personal information that may be used to serve ads that may interest them.
Project Gatineau, Microsoft‘s answer to Google Analytics, is now inviting requests to participate in beta testing. Gatineau offers click and visitor tracking, market campaign reporting and demographic breakdowns for site visitors.
One of the core missions of Nielsen’s new opinion sharing/social networking site Hey! Nielsen is to get users to rate entertainment-themed sites. So Nielsen decided to launch a contest to determine the best TV blog. The results are in: the winner is the fan blog Jericho Monster, one of the sites instrumental in garnering support for the once-cancelled show. The choice is a tribute to the power of the blog itself, as such grassroots efforts ultimately convinced CBS to bring Jericho back for another go next year. (The show’s second season is currently in production.) After all the hubbub, CBS launched a new blog of its own around the show encouraging producers, writers and cast members to post daily notes from the set. Unfortunately it’s been almost a month since they’ve posted anything. C’mon guys-your fans are desperate for the inside scoop.
Cynopsis: Digital Glossary entry:
API (Application Programming Interface) – Routines, protocols and tools programmers use to build software applications. For years, software and hardware companies carefully guarded their APIs to make sure they could control and approve what was developed for their platforms. More recently, open source practices are being adopted, making API’s available to the public to encourage independent developers to create new applications for particular platforms.
