Cynopsis: Kids!

11/12/08

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 12, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

4Kids Entertainment has entered into an agreement with Fox to settle their litigation.  Under the terms of the settlement deal, 4Kids and Fox will cease their eight-year-old Saturday morning broadcast agreement, which currently features the 4KidsTV block (8a-12p) on Fox, on December 31, 2008, that is nine months earlier than original deal that would have ended in September 2009.  The termination of the deal will also include the end of 4Kids financial obligation for the first three quarters of 2009.  Fox has not announced any plans for its Saturday morning, which has traditionally offered programming for kids.  Al Kahn, Chairman and CEO, 4Kids Entertainment, explained, “We believe that the settlement is favorable for both companies and enables 4Kids, beginning in early 2009, to focus resources on our five-hour block of children’s Saturday morning television [TheCW4Kids] on The CW Network.”  4Kids will continue to invest in creating content for its digital platforms, including 4Kids.tv as well as Chaoticgame.com.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Jaden Smith, Will Smith’s 10-year-old son who starred alongside him in The Pursuit of Happyness, will star in Columbia Pictures remake of The Karate Kid, according to Variety.  Set to begin production in 2009, the new version of The Karate Kid will be penned by Chris Murphy.  China Film Group Corp. will serve as co-producer in China.  The original Karate Kid movie, also from Columbia, starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita and was released in 1984, followed by two other films in 1986 and 1989 featuring the same cast, and a fourth film The New Karate Kid starring Hilary Swank released in 1994.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon will offer Drake & Josh fans an early holiday gift as the duo returns in the new two-hour original TV movie, Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh, premiering Friday, December 5, 8-10p. In addition to starring Drake Bell and Josh Peck, the TV movie feature special guest stars Henry Winkler and MMA fighter Kimbo Slice, as well as the series regulars such as Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly) and Jerry Trainor.  Bell and Peck serve as co-producers on the movie, which is written and executive produced by series creator Dan Schneider, with executive producers Lauren Levine and Marjorie Cohn.  A playlist of Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh content, including sneak peeks and behind the scenes features, Vlogs, and a replay of the special, will be available across TurboNick and Nick’s wireless and online syndication partners.  Additionally, an ad-free, stand-alone site, http://www.nick.com/merry, will offer movie-based games-of-the-week, a game tournament, sneak peeks, and holiday e-cards and downloads.

PBS Kids premieres Abby in Wonderland beginning November 26 (check local listings for air dates and times).  The one-hour special features Sesame Street‘s Abby Cadabby in a version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which also stars Elmo, Rosita and Grover among others.  PBS Kids and PBS Kids GO! will also feature new episodes of Curious George, Super Why!, Martha Speaks, and Wordgirl over the holiday weekend.

Jetix Europe seals a deal with Cake Distribution that will bring the tween-targeted US series, Total Drama Island to the UK.  Created by Jennifer Pertsch and Tom McGillis and produced by Fresh TV Inc., Total Drama Island, an animated reality series, will air on Jetix’s UK channel along with other recent acquisitions including Dinosaur King and Pokemon DP Battle Dimension.

MARKETING/LICENSING

SouthPeak Interactive Corporation, a video game publisher, releases a new line of games this month aimed at allowing young kids, 3 years and up, t0 experience parenting with its new My Baby Games.  The two new games, My Baby Girl and My Baby Boy, both for Nintendo DS, let kids raise (feed, dress, diaper) their baby from its first month until its 14the month, with advice from a pediatrician along the way.  Kids can also get a sense of the happy parts of parenting including giggles and coos by encouraging kids/players to be kind and responsible to their baby.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Sesame Workshop names Patti Miller as its VP/Public Policy.  Working at state and federal levels, Miller, will be based in New York and reports to Myung Kang-Huneke who oversees legal and regulatory affairs as part of her role as VP, General Counsel.  Reporting to Miller are Aura Kenny Dunn, Assistant VP/Government Relations and Tracy Garrett, Director/Public Policy.  Miller had been with Children Now.

Patricia Joseph is named VP/Music Placements & Licensing, Razor & Tie Entertainment.  Joseph will work out of the company’s NYC headquarters and will report to Dan Hoffman, EVP/Business/Legal Affairs.  Joseph most recently toiled as VP/Soundtracks/A&R, TVT Records for 20+ years.
