It’s a tie-up between the original portals and a next-generation studio, Michael Eisner’s Vuguru struck a partnership with “the new” AOL that will guarantee blue-ribbon distribution of least half-a-dozen original scripted series. The marriage meets AOL’s commitment to offer more premium content for users and advertisers, while providing Vuguru with a platform that will give it maximum reach and exposure with which to launch hits, via recently purchased 5Min Media or much talked about connected TV platforms. “AOL is a great partner for that  – we may not have enough programming for our own widget on Boxee, but for now we can draft behind the AOL boat,” said Vuguru President Larry Tanz. As with “Prom Queen,” the shows will financed by Vuguru then distributed in chapters that can be repackaged as broadcast-quality feature-length movies for ancillary markets. Prom Queen broke new ground for the distribution of broadband content oversees, selling rights and formats in over 40 markets.


The digitally-savvy NHL is following in the footsteps of Major League Baseball, signing new connected TV deals with Sony‘s PlayStation 3, Roku and Boxee to give fans access to NHL Game Center Live without a cable connection. The package of HD out-of-market games, viewable through a $10 app on the PS3, runs $169 for the season and features access to additional content including post-game highlights, player stats, profiles and classic game replays.
Cablevision unveiled a new interactive gaming service powered by ActiveVideo’s TAG Games and available free to all iO digital TV customers. The offering, found on channel 610, features an array of puzzle, arcade and children’s games including “Bejeweled 2”, “Sudoku” and “Bob the Builder” that users can play on their own or against other iO TV customers.
Univision Interactive Media is making a big interactive push around the 11th Annual Latin Grammy Awards telecast today with a bevy of content and activities on its music-themed Fans can lob questions to top artists, view an online performance by nominee Prince Royce or download nominees’ songs directly from iTunes.


Multiplatform casual games company Oberon Media has closed on a $16 million investment round led by Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Oak Investment Partners, and Infinity I-China. The company also announced that former Internet Broadcasting CEO David Lebow has been appointed to its Board of Directors as well as to the post of Acting Chief Executive Officer.
Indie music site Baeble has completed an integration with Boxee to offer a library of live concerts on the Boxee Box OTT platform.

Mobile advertising platform services provider AdMarvel is working with Verizon Wireless to provide software developer kits (SDKs) and application programming interfaces (APIs) to developers for Android and BlackBerry operating systems for distribution via Verizon’s VCAST App storefront. The AdMarvel platform also offers developers and publishers the capability to source and serve their own ads to cross-promote and cross-sell their applications.


Both the FTC and the Commerce Dept. are considering measures to insure users online privacy and are expected to release independent and possibly conflicting reports on the subject, reports The NYTimes. Commerce officials reportedly favor a more self-regulatory approach (surprise, surprise) while the FTC is considering a do-not-track system to govern online behavioral advertising. 


With mobile data traffic expected to exceed 3.67 exabytes and operators gearing up to launch 4G services, spending on LTE equipment is expected to top $1 billion in 2011, according to a new ABI Research report. Demand for LTE, one of two competing 4G technologies, has increased in recent months as carriers such as Yota in Russia and Clearwire in the U.S. have announced plans to re-commit to building out LTE base stations. 


MSNBC has launched a new free Breaking News app for the iPhone featuring a simple scrolling interface of news items prioritized by when the story broke. The stories are culled from hundreds of sources and the app can be configured to send push alerts for the biggest scoops. The rollout coincides with the relaunch of the MSNBC Digital Network’s the
Disney Channel
has created its first-ever apps for preschoolers with the release of “Handy Manny’s Workshop” and “Flicker’s Flashcard Fiesta” for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The Handy Manny app features narrated animations from the hit series along with 5 different activity zones. The Flicker app showcases interactive flashcards and a word game that tests preschoolers’ English and Spanish language skills. Both applications retail for $2.99/each.
CBS’ CNET, which already has a news-related app, launched the CNET Reviews App for the iPhone/iPod Touch featuring reviews of consumer electronics gear and computers across 12 categories. Filter reviews by price, manufacturer, type, product line or date then drill down to sort by rating, price or date.


has tapped current President of Time Inc.’s Media Group Wayne Powers as SVP/Ad Sales for North America. Wayne will report directly to new U.S. head Ross Levinsohn and will be based in Yahoo’s New York office.
PR Firm RF|Binder Partners hired Nada Arnot as Chief Digital Officer for the company’s Emerging Digital Media group. Nada joins from NBC Universal, where she most recently headed up audience development for iVillage.

Social TV platforms like MisoTV or Comcast’s Tunerfish are becoming commonplace online and they’re building loyal followings. But they still only attract niche audiences that aren’t yet big enough to really extract value from. A new social TV service dubbed has solved this problem by analyzing posts from all of Facebook and Twitter to rank shows in real-time based on how much chatter they are generating. Talkwit’s Social Guide, accessible via the web, iPhone or iPad, pulls in your local cable guide info then ranks the channel #’s that are the most social at a given moment. It is the first real-time TV discovery engine – instead of trying to surf 700 channels to figure out what’s on you can peruse the shows that are attracting the most social activity. You can also read comments from Facebook and Twitter at large for each show as they happen, filtered to follow specific friends or from across the spectrum. founder Sean Casey, who is close to closing on a $750k series A financing round for the company, says cable networks like Oxygen already understand the importance of building and retaining audience using social media. He is working on syndicating the guide out to help networks (and eventually MSOs) improve community interactive functionality with audiences. But there’s also immediate value in its proprietary social TV rankings because it is the first product of its kind that reaches the entire social graph. “We wanted to do something to make the guide better for everyone, not just the folks interested in checking in and getting badges,” said Mr. Casey.’s data told an interesting tale on Monday night: Conan’s premiere proved to be #1 most social show, registering 27,522 related comments on the social services and beating MNF and WWE Raw.
