11/10/05

Good morning.  It’s Thursday, November 10, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The White House announced yesterday that President Bush plans to nominate Deborah Tate (R-Tennessee) to serve as Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission. The President also intends to re-nominate Michael Copps (D) for an additional 5-year term, taking him past his current FCC end date of June 30, 2006.  Tate and Copps, who are both favor of more rigid indecency regulations and enforcement, must be voted on and confirmed by the US Senate.  If confirmed, Tate would take over the seat previously held by Kevin Martin (R), who was upped to FCC Chairman in March 2005.  Another FCC panel seat, currently held by GOP Commissioner Kathleen Abernathy, will be vacant come the end of the current Senate session at the end of the year.* MORE GOOD STUFF *TV as we know it continues to evolve.  Earlier this week CBS and NBC both announced their own respective VOD deals with Comcast and DirecTV respectively.  Today, CBS Digital Media announced a deal with AOL to provide current, up to the minute, broadband video and text news programming from CBSNews.com for the AOL News channel. AOL News combines news from a variety of sources with polls, blogs and multimedia features, reaching more than 21 million monthly.

There’s a new digital public television channel on the horizon:  Create, featuring lifestyle and how-to programming, covering cooking, painting, travel, gardening and other interests.  American Public Television, together with Thirteen WNET/NY and WGBH/Boston, announced its premiere yesterday.  The official launch date is January 9, 2006, reaching 60% of the total US TV households with coverage from 134 public television stations’ digital signals and via digital cable systems.  Coverage includes 15 of the top 25 DMAs.  Series carried on the channel include P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home, Scrapbook Memories and Rick Steves’ Europe.

Great American Country (GAC) and the Grand Ole Opry have re-upped their deal, extending GAC’s broadcast rights of its highest rated program, Grand Ole Opry Live.  The multi-year agreement provides for additional live shows, as well as plans for GAC to develop new Opry-related programs.  GAC is currently seen in nearly 40 million households, including the top 50 markets and on satellite via DirecTV.

Hallmark Channel has picked up the off-net syndicated series Diagnosis Murder.  The show will join the Hallmark schedule starting January 3rd at 12n.

MTV‘s new series Run’s House debuted on October 13 with 3.3 million viewers.  Yesterday the network announced the show has been ordered for a second season, scheduled to debut in 2006.  The current season finale is scheduled for November 17 at 1030p.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Fox has given a pilot commitment to a project based on the original Terminator movie franchise.  The project is tentatively called The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and will be produced by C2 Pictures, Warner Bros TV., and written and exec produced by Josh Friedman. Fox has attached a financial penalty in the event the project does not go to series.  Linda Hamilton is not expected to be participating in the project, nor will Governor Schwarzenegger who perhaps has bigger fish to fry right now. The Sarah Connor Chronicles will focus on the Connor family in the time frame between Terminator movie #1 and #2.

ABC has given a pilot commitment to a comedy series about two sisters, both raised in completely opposite environments.  The project is from Kirk Rudell and Shana Goldberg, and will be produced by Warner Bros. TV.  And ABC has ordered up a script with penalty for a second project from Rudell about long-term friendships created as youngsters and complicated as adults.

Regis Philbin will return to primetime as the host of the remake of the television series This is Your Life for ABC, which will air as a series of specials. Originally the show was hosted by Ralph Edwards, who will be the subject one of the upcoming specials.  The show will be produced by Fox TV Studios.

Spike TV‘s new original pilot project Blade from New Line Television, based on the comic book character who is half-man, half-vampire, and out to save the world, has cast Kirk “Sticky” Jones in the title role.  Other cast members include Jill Wagner, Nelson Lee, Jessica Gower and Neil Jackson.  If the show is picked up to series, it could premiere on the network as early as this summer.

USA Network has ordered up a new 60m comedy project called Underfunded from NBC Universal TV.  The project has a cast-contingency provision, and was written by David Breckman, the same guy who writes Monk.  This project is seen as a potential companion to Monk.  It’s about a Canadian Secret Service agent who just doesn’t have the funds to get the job done properly.

And finally, what could be the most important update of the day – Nickelodeon has ordered 20 more episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants. That’s good living in Bikini Bottom!  Everybody sing! Who lives in a pineapple under the sea ….

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *fuse has appointed Alex Campbell to VP/Programming and Production and Brian Hoffman to VP/On-Air Promotions and Packaging. Alex’s responsibilities range from overseeing all current series, specials and production management to artist and talent relations and music acquisitions, while Brian is charged with all aspects of fuse’s on-air promotions and packaging, including program graphics and station id’s.

Carat Media Group America has appointed Amy Drill as SVP/Media Innovation Development.  In her role, Amy will lead efforts to build on Carat’s already industry-leading tool set and work with the Carat team to develop enhanced, innovative solutions to meet the dynamic needs of Carat clients. She will also be responsible for driving Carat’s media research and strategy functions, to help strengthen Carat’s position as a research leader in the marketplace.

High Noon Entertainment has named Scott Leibfried the host of the television series Food Network Challenge.  The company also named Arthur Edwards co-executive producer and Deborah Climie event planner for the series. Scott recently appeared on the Fox TV series Hell’s Kitchen as a sous chef. As host of Challenge, he will provide commentary and insights on the competitions, participants and their creations.

E! Studios has upped Jay James to SVP/Development and named former “Insider” producer Steve Tseckares as Executive Producer/Programming for E! Studios. Jay and Steve will report directly to Jeff Shore, SVP/Production, E! Networks. Jay will oversee the development of new series and specials, and supervise new seasons of current programs.

Kix Brooks has been named the new host of ABC Radio Network’s American Country Countdown, the longest running count to #1 in the country. Kix will take over as the host in January 2006.  The show is a music-intensive 4 hours, counting down the biggest 40 songs in country music each week and heard on more than 400 radio stations nationwide, along with the Armed Forces Radio Network and internationally through a joint venture with Radio Express.

1969-National Educational Television, the precursor to PBS, debuts a new children’s television program called Sesame Street.  Of the show’s many familiar and beloved characters, only Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch (who at the time sported orange fur) were present at the show’s creation.
