Social networking platforms are still waiting for traffic to translate into revenue. MySpace parent Fox Interactive Media’s revenue actually fell during Q1 from $233 million to $210 million as News Corp. CEO Peter Chernin admitted in a conference call that FIM will fall about 10% short of its optimistic $1 billion revenue projection for FY ’08. The company is still dealing with several challenges, he said, including an abundance of inventory, a dearth of top shelf sponsors and the difficulty of establishing new metrics to prove FIM’s value to advertisers.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Women’s content is all the rage in the digital world these days. NBC unveiled a new Virtual Woman’s Network dubbed Women@NBC that will differentiate itself by firing on multiple platforms and brands including Bravo, Oxygen, iVillage and Green is Universal as well as other female-skewing properties such as the Today show, The Biggest Loser and Lipstick Jungle. Bravo & Oxygen Media President Lauren Zalaznick has been chosen to oversee the venture with the new title of President, Women and Lifestyle Entertainment Networks, still reporting to Jeff Gaspin, President & COO, Universal Television Group. Women@NBC gives the company another shot at mastering the demo after the $600 million iVillage acquisition has failed to bear much fruit. Let’s watch what happens.
 
Neil Young
became the poster boy for Sun Microsystem’s Java On2 technology that gives Blu-ray discs their interactivity. The rocker announced plans to release his entire music catalog on Blu-ray, beginning with a 10-disc set from Reprise/Warner Bros. Records in the fall, spanning ’63 to ’72. Fans with the latest Java-capable Blu-ray players will be able to download lyrics, photos, tour info and additional songs from the broadband connected devices. 
 
The next big console game was released this week in North America – a casual multilevel puzzle game called Boom Blox produced by Electronic Arts, exclusively for the Wii. Why such hype for a puzzle game?  It’s the first of three EA releases created in close collaboration with Steven Spielberg. It’s also a chance for the famous filmmaker to save face in the gaming industry- a big budget Atari game released in 1982 based on E.T. has long been knows as one of the industry’s biggest flops. 
 
Former CBS Early Show anchor Rene Syler will join Meredith’s multiplatform network Parents TV hosting its first long-form show, It Moms, beginning in June. Parents.tv is available as a Comcast VOD channel, a Sprint TV offering and on broadband at parents.tv.
 
The Ellen Degeneres Show will be the next daytime talker to be broadcast in HD next season after moving to a new state-of-the-art all digital facility on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank.
 
CBS College Sports Network has also made the jump to HD, available nationally on DirecTV.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Last.fm
increased its distribution reach in Europe in a carriage deal with AOL Europe‘s online radio platform. The service is initially available in France, Germany and the U.K. with plans to roll out across Europe in the coming months.
 
Video search engine Truveo also made a play to increase its market share overseas, introducing new localized ranking algorithms that will deliver results specifically relevant to each of the 17 international portals it operates.
 
Call for Content: iSorpresa! will announce the “Reporterito contest tomorrow. Aspiring sports journalists may upload video submissions, featuring their reporting prowess to sorpresatv.com from May 10 through June 13. The winning “Reporterito” will receive all-expense paid trips to the Pepsi MLS All-Star Game in Toronto on July 24 and MLS Cup 2008 in Los Angeles on November 23, and serve as a sideline reporter for iSorpresa!‘s MLS sports segments.

Users of the Windows Media Center, which now comes standard with the pricier versions of Vista, now have a way to pump video, music, images and other content stored on their PCs to other locations in the house wirelessly. D-Link today began shipping its latest MediaLounge Media Player designed to operate as an Extender for Windows Media Center. Media files can be found by the DSM-750 from PCs or storage boxes connected to the home network and then played on a TV using the included remote control.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
The Sprint/Clearwire WiMax venture was officially announced, and partners’ contributions were clarified. Google seems to come out in the catbird’s seat:

  • Google will partner with the new Clearwire in the development of internet services, advertising services, search and applications for mobile WiMAX devices
  • Google will partner with Clearwire on an open Internet business protocol for mobile broadband devices. Its future voice and data devices will support Google’s Android operating system software.
  • Sprint and Google have also entered into an agreement related to Sprint’s mobile services, whereby Google will become the default provider of web and local search services. Sprint will also preload several Google services – including Google Maps for mobile, Gmail and YouTube – on select phones
  • Google and Intel have options to enter into 3G and 4G wholesale agreements with Clearwire and Sprint respectively but have no current plans to do so

 
The MPAA won their copyright infringement case against P2P file sharing site TorrentSpy.com. Site operator Valence Media was ordered to pay $30,000 per violation for facilitating nearly 3,700 illegal movie and TV downloads. The site has been shuttered since March.
 
Google and Viacom are prepared to take their battle over whether or not YouTube is responsible for pirated uploads all the way to the Supreme Court, according to comments made executives from each company. (IMHO, It is about time the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is better defined anyway.)

Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group has named Brian Offutt to the new position of SVP/Creative Operations. He will be responsible for all of the operational, financial, technology and human resources processes for Nick’s Creative Resources and On-Air departments including programming, marketing, consumer products, digital and public affairs.
Video search engine Blinkx doubled the size of its sales team with 4 new hires in 3 separate cities. Kat Kashefi and Erik Esfandiary will join the London sales office. Darrin Porter, who previously worked for Ziff Davis, will join the San Francisco office as Director of Advertising Sales. Jason Whidby, previously of MTV, will be a Sales Manager for Blinkx based in Los Angeles.

Digital out-of-home video provider Channel M named Peter Lee to the dual role of Chief Technology Officer and Chief Strategy Officer. Lee most recently served as VP/Business Development New Technology at Disney’s Corporate Strategy, Planning and Technology Group.

First The Groundlings now Second City. Media Rights Capital is funding an online comedy venture called The Second City’s Quarantine with the Chicago-initiated theater troupe that has spawned nearly 50 years of comic talent from John Belushi to Tina Fey. The site will feature archive material and original fare from its current members in Chicago, Toronto and Los Angeles. If video does for Second City what it did for The Onion, a powerful internet brand could be born. One Second City denizen has already shown he has what it takes to create for the web. A riff on Yes We Can created by L.A.-based Andy Cobb and partners has generated more than 1.6 million views since February.
 
Clarification: ReelzChannel’s free VOD service is launching in June to promote VOD and PPV movies being offered by its cable partners. Reelz itself doesn’t operate any PPV or VOD premium services.
