The set-in-their-ways cable industry is beginning to look beyond the cable plant to try and keep up with the exploding internet video market. Comcast will soon begin testing a new service at MIT to transmit live TV over Internet Protocol (IP) that would potentially allow multiple devices including laptops and gaming consoles to be used as set-top boxes, according to a WSJ report. While other universities have used IP to stream live cable to computers for years, the move indicates that Comcast for one is literally thinking outside of the box to try and keep cable relevant to younger, digitally savvy users who balk at the chunkiness of the traditional cable interface.


Bravo is promoting its summer line-up with a series of digital extensions including an online summer camp talent show and an app that allows you to send Summer by Bravo e-cards. Viewers can also utilize the Shazam mobile app to tag the promo on their smartphones to access photos, videos and behind-the-scenes content.
DIY Network erected a new online room renovation contest around its upcoming home renovation show The Vanilla Ice Project (yep, the 80’s rapper.) The viewer who uploads the most compelling pitch for why Vanilla Ice should renovate their room will receive a $30k makeover and be featured on the second season of the show, premiering in early 2012. Entries must be received by June 27.
Fitness model and “The Butt Bible” author Pauline Nordin has signed on to host a free VOD programming block on NBCU’s Exercise TV service. The videos become available June 28.


The next big frothy tech IPO may be social gaming leader Zynga (Mafia Wars, CityVille) according to an AllThingsD report. Zynga now claims 250 million active monthly users, with CityVille alone attracting 90 million monthly players. It generated $850 million in revenue last year and $400 million in profit, according to reports.
After buying DealADayOnline in Chicago, deal site BuyWithMe acquired San Francisco-based buying and social commerce company Groop Swoop for an undisclosed amount. BuyWithMe currently operates deal offers in 13 cities.


In an exclusive deal, professional video game league Major League Gaming (MLG) struck a partnership with video ad management and monetization platform Auditude to give MLG control of insertion of video ads in live-streamed tournaments and video-on-demand content. Similar to Auditude’s deal with MLB announced last month, the partnership provides MLG with the capability to dynamically program multi-unit ad pods to give MLG users a TV-like viewing experience.
Mobile ad network Millennial Media is announcing the acquisition of Condaptive, a Washington D.C.-based mobile startup that has built a proprietary technology used for audience formation and development. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Mobile marketing specialist Upstream is rolling out new features to the “gamification engine” that is the backbone of its Marketing Communications Suite (MCS) technology platform. The technology now delivers real-time personalization features that deliver insights into consumer interactions as they happen, enabling advertisers to tailor campaigns so that their frequency, progress and content are driven by highly targeted mobile consumer segments.


AT&T announced the first five cities that will receive upgrades to its 4G high-speed Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network. (Drumroll please:) Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta and San Antonio will begin humming at LTE speeds this summer and ten more (unnamed) markets will be added during the second half of the year with a goal to cover 70 million potential Americans by the end the year. The company is in the process of rolling out both HSPA+ and LTE networks.
Sony continues to be under siege from hackers, this time detecting intrusions in Canada, Thailand and Indonesia. Email addresses and names were pilfered in Canada while web codes for a Japanese music unit were suspected of being stolen in Indonesia, reports Bloomberg.


Experian’s Hitwise announced that it is launching a panel-based measurement service in China that will report on more than 1 million Chinese sites across 130 industries and the company pulled up some interesting trends about microblogging to kick off the service. Sina Micro (China’s answer to Twitter) accounted for 1 in every 158 Internet visits in China for April 2011, making the nation one of the most voracious micro-blogging nations worldwide. (China has a greater market share of visits going to micro-blogging sites than the UK, US, France, Canada, Australia or India as of April 2011.) While Twitter is by far the most dominant micro-blogging platform in the UK and US – it accounted for 1 in every 250 visits online in the UK and 1 in every 555 in the US during April 2011 –  its usage pales in comparison to Sina Micro’s dominance in China.
Revenue generated from Tablet applications are projected to top $15 billion in 2015, according to a new In-Stat report that surveyed users and developers across multiple platforms. Survey respondents indicated that nearly 80% of tablet apps downloaded were through an OS provider store and the majority of respondents prefer using the application store as the preferred method of payment for both the applications and in-application purchases.
More than 60% of mobile users click on ads at least once a week, according to a two-month study released from mobile ad network Mojiva with digital marketing research firm InsightExpress that polled 100 users. When seeing an ad, half of users indicated that they would play a game, download an application, or visit a Web site after seeing an ad – but only 22% said they would make a purchase and only 40% would download a coupon.


Facebook is getting ready to unveil a new music streaming app from Spotify that will allow you stream millions of songs right on a sidebar on the site, according to Forbes. The service will only be available in the countries in which UK-based Spotify has already launched, which of course excludes the U.S.
Oceanhouse Media
signed a new licensing agreement with Golden Films to bring its Enchanted Tales titles to the App Market. The first in the series, Enchanted Tales: Snow White, has been released today for Apple and Android devices for $1.99.


Former chief of staff to Activision-Blizzard CEO Andrew Doyle had been tapped by Break Media to become the company’s new CFO. He is joined by the addition of former CTO David Subar as Chief Technology Officer, responsible for product management and development. The hirings come on the heels of Greg Siegel joining Break as SVP of Entertainment Development.
Josh Builder has been upped to the position of Chief Technology Officer for digital music distributor The Orchard, charged with overseeing product strategy, product technology design, development and content management/delivery systems. He is based in the company’s New York City office.
Online activism and philanthropy site has hired Aussie James Windon as VP/Business Development.
Monica Halpert, former Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Content, Community and Communications of, was named the fourth “CMO in Residence” in NBCUniversal‘s quarterly Integrated Strategic Marketing rotational program. She will join the ISM team for the summer.

YouTube turned 6 years old yesterday (yes, it’s still a youngin’) and it commemorated the occasion with a blog post that gives us an idea of just how big this phenomenal site has become. In terms of volume, 48 hours of video tonnage is uploaded to the site every minute now – that’s an increase of 37% from 6 months ago and 100% from a year ago. YouTube users now watch north of 3 billion videos each day; that’s up 50% from last year. The site has obviously benefited from getting there first and has grown as the ease and ubiquity of shooting digital video has proliferated. It can all be traced back to this little piece of commentary on elephants from the San Diego Zoo uploaded at 8:27pm on Saturday, April 23rd 2005 – the first video ever uploaded to the site.
