Cynopsis: Kids!

05/25/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 25, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Toys “R” Us, Inc. is revving up to re-launch its online businesses by entering into new long-term partnership deals with GSI Commerce, Inc. and Exel.  The transition of Toysrus.com and Babiesrus.com to the new e-commerce platform is slated to take place on July 1, 2006, including a new look for the sites featuring additional product information.  Under the agreements, GSI Commerce will provide technology, customer service and support, and Exel will provide fulfillment services for both Toysrus.com and Babiesrus.com.  Earlier this year Toys “R” Us won a suit to end its agreement with Amazon.com, allowing the toy retailer to continue its online stores at toysrus.com and babiesrus.com.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Sprint and LG Electronics MobileComm USA, Inc., have introduced FUSIC (fyoo’ zik), a new mobile phone unit designed to look like a portable music player and to interface with the Sprint Music Store where songs can be downloaded.  Additional FUSIC features include:  1 GB of storage; an FM transmitter, for playing music through a radio or car stereo; Bluetooth Stereo support; ring tone composer; streaming music from Sprint Radio, Music Choice, Rhapsody Radio, MTV Mobile and VH1 Mobile; and four different color faceplates.  FUSIC is exclusive to Sprint and will be available from May 28th.

Released just yesterday by Buena Vista Home Entertainment, the DVD of Disney Channel’s original movie High School Musical sold 400,000+ units in North America in its first day, making it the fastest selling TV program on DVD for this year so far and the fastest selling TV movie of all time on DVD.

McFarlane Toys has inked a licensing deal with Touchstone Television to produce a series of action figures based on the hiat ABC series Lost.  McFarlane Toys’ Lost Series 1 will include figures of six characters from the first season of the series: Jack, Kate, Hurley, Locke, Charlie and Shannon.  Slated to be in stores late fall 2006, each 6-inch action figure will come complete with a detailed base and photo-backdrop, as well as a version of a prop all of which are an episode-specific reflection of the character’s storyline.  Additionally, the company will release Lost deluxe boxed sets that re-create significant moments between multiple characters, and small-scale dioramas.  McFarlane hopes to create action figures of all the major members of the Lost cast.

STONE SOUP

Two new studies show that kids are watching more TV and using electronic devices at earlier ages:

It isn’t news that TV has long been the other constant family member in American homes, or that kids/tweens/teens watch a lot of TV, including while doing other things, and that parents/caretakers use TV to occupy kids while they take a breather.  But according to the Kaiser Family Foundation’ new study, The Media Family: Electronic Media in the Lives of infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers, and Their Parents, we aren’t just talking about kids in general anymore, but also the much younger set – those under age 6.  Many parents surveyed appear to be aware that Academy of Pediatrics warn against kids under the age of two watching TV, and yet whether they agree or disagree they are letting their babies/toddlers watch.  Additionally, parents don’t appear to be feeling quite as guilty about letting their really little ones watch and in fact find their kids benefit in developmental and educational ways from TV viewing, which is to say many are all for their kids watching TV.  The survey is based on data from 1,000+ phone interviews of parents with kids 6 months-6 yrs-old, which were conducted in September-November 2005 and eight focus groups conducted in March 2005 in four different parts of the country.  Below are some findings from the study, more information about the study and its presentation can be found at http://www.kff.org/entmedia/entmedia052406pkg.cfm.

  • On a typical day more than eight in ten (83%) children under the age of six use screen media, with those children averaging about two hours a day.
  • Media use increases with age, from 61% of babies one year or younger who watch screen media in a typical day (for an avg. of 1:20) to 90% of K4-6 yrs-olds (for an average of 2:03).
  • One in three (33%) kids this age has a TV in their bedroom (19% of children ages 1-yr or younger, 29% of K2-3 yrs, and 43% of K4-6 yrs).
  • A third (32%) of these babies/toddlers live in homes where the TV is on all (13%) or most (19%) of the time, similarly about the same number (30%) live in homes where the TV is on during meals all (16%) or most (14%) of the time.

The most common reasons parents give for putting a TV in their kid’s bedroom:

  • To free up other TVs in the house so the parent or other family members can watch their own shows (55%)
  • To keep the child occupied so the parent can do things around the house (39%)
  • To help the child fall asleep (30%)
  • As a reward for good behavior (26%)

According to the NPD Group’s Kids and Consumer Electronics II report, on the average K4-14 are using consumer electronics devices six months earlier than they were in 2005.  Items that came up in the report as the highest “hot ticket” products include digital cameras, cell phones and portable video game systems, which are all leaders and/or big gainers in terms of kids’ personal ownership (as opposed to household ownership) & usage.  In terms of personal ownership, more than twice the amount of kids personally own portable digital music players and digital cameras this year over the 2005 report, while cell phone ownership is up by 50%.  Findings are based on 3,500+ completed online surveys of individuals 25 and older with K4-14 living in their home.

Answer to Yesterday’s trivia question: Who am I?  I was born in Kentucky.  My first foray into the entertainment field was as part of a band in the late 1960s which produced one so-called hit. When the band didn’t produce much after our hit, I was asked to be a game show host, taking over for Edd Byrnes who shot the pilot game episode. Thereafter, I moved to a relationship game for several years, and was succeeded by Pat Bullard. In the late 1990’s, I stepped in where Brad Sherwood left off to host another game show for two years. I am currently still on the air, and still hosting yet another game show after succeeding Ralph Andrews.  Who am I?  CHARLES (CHUCK) WOOLERY   Kudos to: Jane Patterson-Springs Global US/Rock Hill SC; Cindy Arlantico-Green Eyes Studio/Summerville SC; Enid Chaban-Random House Children’s Books/NY; Greg Janover-Kingworld/NY; Christine Gaither-The Marketing Store/Lombard IL; Marc Stryker-PPBH/Salt Lake City; Kerri Huyck-KIDK/Idaho Falls ID; Ginger Sorvari-Best Buy Co Inc/Minneapolis; Liz Stahler-Suppertime Entertainment/LA; Steve Leblang-FX Network
