Google CEO Eric Schmidt admitted that YouTube hasn’t yet figured out how to monetize its massive audience in an interview yesterday on CNBC’s Closing Bell With Maria Bartiromo. But he promised the best was yet to come. “We believe the best products are coming out this year. And they’re new products … Google believes that advertising itself has value. The ads literally are valuable to consumers.”

There’s been much debate about whether or not audiences will watch entire TV show episodes on their mobile phones. What about feature films? Online movie service CinemaNow launched a new option powered by uVUMobile allowing users to preview and download full movies to their WAP-enabled handsets. Purchased movies can be ported to other devices connected through CinemaNow’s Media Manager software, including PCs, set-top boxes and portable media players.
mtvU and the Kaiser Family Foundation, in partnership with POZ Magazine, today unveiled “Pos or Not” – an online game challenging stereotypes and breaking down barriers that may prevent people from talking openly about HIV/AIDS, getting tested or using protection.
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin are using YouTube to try and entice the eventual Presidential nominees to hold a debate in the city in September. So far there are no official debates scheduled for the Big Easy, but let’s see if this online pitch will help.

Video metadata firm Gotuit unveiled a new authoring tool allowing publishers to better package content to make individual clips searchable by context. Networks can use the tool to mark up their entire library of full episodes to make individual scenes searchable by character, plot line, topic, highlights, funniest lines, etc. – opening up whole new monetization possibilities.
Video search engine ClipBlast! officially launched its detachable, cross-platform Playbox video player. The player allows users to watch, save and send videos from several sources without leaving the site they are on.
Warm and fuzzy Wi-Fi internet appliance Chumby will soon be adding flash based games from Canada-based Albino Blacksheep that take advantage of the device’s touchscreen and tilt/motion sensor interface.
Time Warner is finally going through with it, announcing it will move to split off Time Warner Cable and use the proceeds to buy back some of its own shares. Revenues and cable, data and phone subscriber numbers were all significantly up for the quarter, so maybe it’s a good time to sell. In its earnings call Time Warner also said it will begin to release its DVD and VOD movies day-and-date beginning later this year. The profit margins on VOD PPV purchases far exceed those for DVD releases, according to CEO Jeff Bewkes.
The knives are out for FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, and no doubt the cable industry couldn’t be happier. A memo obtained by the Washington Post says Martin may soon be forced to defend his questionable leadership practices before a congressional hearing. An investigation has been underway since December by the Committee on Energy and Commerce, fueled by allegations of mismanagement, waste, fraud and abuse. The Committee sent Chairman Martin the following laundry list of discovery items in March.
Microsoft directors met yesterday to discuss raising its offer to the neighborhood of $32-$33/share according to The WSJ. But Yahoo is still playing hard to get, wanting more like $35-$37.
Time Warner’s AOL division didn’t fare as well this quarter, with ad revenues climbing just 1% and total revenues continuing to hemorrhage from the loss of subscription revenue. The company says it is experiencing “challenges” integrating recently acquired online ad businesses; AOL spent $1 billion over the past year on companies such as online ad networks Tocado and Quigo.
The mobile content platform market grew by 20% to $3.4 billion worldwide in 2007 as mobile users reached for more entertainment content including ringtones, music, mobile games and video, according to MultiMedia Intelligence. The researcher says North America is rapidly transitioning to an “off deck” dominated content market but noted further growth is being stymied by the difficulty of content discovery and purchasing.
Mobile content provider Crisp Wireless seems to confirm this trend. The company says nearly 40% of its mobile internet page views were “off-deck” in February, with 27% of the traffic coming from users inputting an address directly or returning to a bookmarked page.
comScore announced several enhancements to its Plan Metrix service to improve timeliness and audience segmentation capabilities. comScore Plan Metrix is used by ad agencies, marketers and publishers to link consumers’ offline behavior with their online activity. Enhancements include Monthly Data Releases, Behavioral Segmentation, Local Market Segmentation, Mean and Median Reporting.
Former Vivendi Games President Martin Tremblay has been named President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, effective June 2008. He will oversee publishing, marketing, sales and distribution, licensing and business development of the studio’s interactive entertainment product. Martin will report to Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.
Kongregate is a gaming site that understands online gaming is much more fun when it’s a social experience. Billing itself as a “YouTube of games,” the site offers over 4,000 ad supported games and clever ways to allow users to challenge friends and build communities. Launched in March of 2007, the site is attracting the best and brightest game developers by offering them a share of the ad revenue and full ownership of the games they design. Kongregate is building momentum fast. It racked up 1.7 million unique visitors in March (according to comScore) who spent an average of 82 minutes on the site per month. TechCruch reports Amazon founder Jeff Bezos just invested another $3 million in the company. Also, Kongregate is planning to launch a series of Facebook apps next month to allow users to play its most popular games on the platform, including Dolphin Olympics, Jump Cat and Super Crazy Guitar Maniac.
