Sony Corp. announced it has plugged a new online security hole that may have allowed hackers to gain control of accounts on its PlayStation Network and Qriocity entertainment services. (In order to deal with it, the company has taken the networks offline again.) Sony Chairman and CEO Sir Howard Stringer, still apparently in denial about the breadth of an attack that is still not locked down after nearly a month, described the hacker attack on its online entertainment services as “hiccup in the road to a network future,” reports Bloomberg. He also characterized the attack as a sign of things to come for all web-based entertainment businesses. No losses were yet projected but analysts have suggested that the breach could cost Sony as much as $1 billion.
Hulu‘s free lunch may be over. Its new purported deal with media giants to extend access to TV shows could delay the site’s ability to air episodes for free if other streaming sites are willing to pay for the privilege, per the WSJ. The deal could delay access to network shows for as long as a week if cable providers, who are looking to build out their TV Everywhere services, are willing to pay.
Dish Network is beefing up its own TV Everywhere offering DishOnline.com with the addition of Turner’s Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and truTV shows. Features Shows include Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, from Cartoon Network, Adult Swim’s Children’s Hospital, the ever popular Robot Chicken and truTV’s Operation Repo and Hardcore Pawn.
For the first time the Cannes Film Festival has decided to transmit its Festival TV channel in digital form to each attending journalist as well as selected broadcasters such as CanalSat, the Canal Plus channels, Orange TV, orange.fr – the Orange World mobile portal – as well as on cable in the town of Cannes itself. Exterity’s AvediaStream HD encoders will handle the transcoding and distributing of the feeds.
Amazon.com announced the launch of the mystery and thriller-themed “Thomas & Mercer,” the fifth imprint from Amazon Publishing, named after the cross streets of the firm’s new S.Lake Union headquarters. Participating authors include Kyle Mills, J.A. Konrath and D.M. Annechino.
Billing itself as the magazine industry’s digital newsstand, Next Issue Media (NIM) launched a sneak peak of an ambitious offering on Wed. beginning with digital versions of Conde Nast’s New Yorker, Hearst’s Esquire and Popular Mechanics, Meredith’s Fitness and Parents, and Time Inc.’s Fortune and Time. The platform’s biggest selling point to publishers is its promise to share extensive subscriber data, jealously guarded by Apple’s iPad publishing system, notes AllThingsD. The preview version is meant to tease interest in NIM’s full blown version due out this fall as a single multiplatform app. But for now, only Galaxy Tab users will have access to the titles through Verizon Wireless’ V CAST Apps Store.
Yahoo just launched a new daily video newscast Trending Now on Yahoo! News, premiering daily from 9am PT/noon ET and summarizing news stories that are moving the needle on the web. Hosted by Adriana Diaz (Channel One), the web series will also be the first podcast to be featured daily on Yahoo’s Homepage – one of the heaviest trafficked sites on the web.
Ad-supported indie online movie distributor Inmoo completed an integration with Roku. Inmoo’s suite of management tools encode and stream videos while sharing strategic partnerships with advertising networks to help filmmakers monetize their films.
Yahoo also announced plans to acquire 5to1 Holding Corp., an online advertising alliance built on a proprietary publisher-controlled platform, geared to help brand advertisers expand premium inventory on a mass scale. Yahoo! expects the deal to close during Q2, after which the 5to1 team will join Yahoo! as part of its Ad Marketplaces group.
IM web toolkit Meebo launched a new platform called Quests as an extension of its web check in system that rewards users for discovering sponsored sites across the web. Not unlike Foursquare, Quests works by unlocking badges, scoring points and tallying rewards. The first Quest to launch was Cheetos Billion Minute Break, where users goof off,” asking users to explore Cheeto brands to rack up status and prizes. Meebo’s “Summer of Movies Quest” entices users to check into websites about upcoming summer blockbusters.
In a letter to State Senator Ellen Corbett, a slew of web heavyweights such as Facebook, Zynga, Google, Twitter and Skype have thrown in together to fight California’s proposed online privacy bill (SB 242) that would require express permission from users to share their personal info with advertisers and other third parties. Originally aimed to protect the privacy of younger users, it has since been expanded to extend opt-in protection to all users.
Clearwire Corp. has tapped L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. to run its 4G next-generation wireless network on an outsourcing basis. The agreement would allow cash-strapped Clearwire to save labor, maintenance and operational costs, hoping to see savings expand further with the growth of its network. Some 700 Clearwire employees will join Ericsson by mid-year.
Capacity issues on broadband networks caused by leading streaming video service Netflix continue to intensify as a new report from broadband analytics firm Sandvine, a company that makes equipment that helps cable and telco ISPs manage their internet backend, claims that nearly 30% of peak internet traffic is being generated from Netflix’ 23 million North American accounts. That’s up from 20% last year – a 40% gain. Real-time entertainment applications driven by live events including The Royal Wedding, the NCAA’s March Madness basketball tournament and YouTube streaming cricket matches from the Indian Premier League, now consume 49.2% of peak aggregate traffic, up from 29.5% a year ago. The revelation, of course, is expected to lead to the ramping up of tiered or metered-based broadband pricing.

Comcast has updated its popular Xfinity TV iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad app (2 million plus downloads since Nov.) adding access to 6,000 hours of on demand content when using a Wi-Fi connection. New content deals have brought the app’s selection to 25 networks, according to the MSO. Other improvements include personalization features, enhanced parental controls and a new time-saving feature that automatically ports over the customer’s channel line up the first time they use it.
CBS Interactive’s GameSpot has launched a new free app for iPad, offering video reviews in HD along with gaming-focused coverage from the site. Content includes previews, reviews, breaking news, original video content, gameplay footage, trailers, interviews and photo galleries delivered over both Wi-Fi and 3G networks.
OxygenLive, Oxygen‘s web-based live viewing app, has come up with new variation to feature around the premiere of its upcoming Paris Hilton reality show, “The World According to Paris.” This version will appear as custom viewing Facebook app that will allow fans to chat and view a live steam of Paris Live, a pre-show discussion show hosted by Paris herself, kicking off 15 minutes before the Oxygen show premiers at 9:45 pm ET/PT on June 1.
Former Sirius Satellite Radio Chairman and CEO Joseph P. Clayton was named President and CEO of Dish Network earlier this week, replacing Charlie Ergen, who will remain on as Chairman of the company.
Well-established professional-themed social network LinkedIn beats Facebook to the punch on Thursday with a long-awaited initial public offering. The Mountain View, CA-based firm has taken a conservative approach, waiting it until in achieved profitability ($3.4 million profit on $243 million revenue in 2010) after breaking the 100 million-user mark. Good things come to those who wait – its market capitalization is currently projected at $4 billion, 258 times greater than its 2010 profit.
