Cynopsis: DIGITAL
5/17/07
Good Morning, it’s Thursday, May 17, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Amazon.com announced plans to launch a digital music store later this year that will feature “millions” of songs free of DRM copyright protections. Amazon says it has signed more than 12,000 labels for the service, but didn’t specify which labels. So far London-based EMI is the only major distributor to agree to sell mp3 tracks without DRM protections in a deal struck with Apple last month.
Telemundo announced cross platform marketing opportunities for the Back 2 School promotional campaign, coverage of Chivas de Guadalajara soccer games, dating show 12 Corazones: Rumbo al Altar and novela Idolos de Juventud. Advertisers will be offered online components on Yahoo!Telemundo and holamun2.com, as well as mobile sponsorships, in-store advertising and special events tied to the programming. Also launching first quarter of 2008 is Holamun2.com: El Show, a 30-minute weekly magazine program bringing the best news, celebrity and music reviews and user-generated content to the TV screen.
YouTube is requesting a sit down with the Department of Defense to discuss the ban placed on use of the site via the DOD’s network of computers, according to a report in MarketWatch. A vast majority of YouTube videos posted by soldiers or their families/friends are personal in nature, argues a company spokesperson.
The New York Times expects to grow the audience of its online video by four to five times by allowing bloggers to embed its videos on their sites, according to Martin Nisenholtz, The Times SVP/Digital Operations.
ESPN.com will begin offering content from Mixed Martial Arts site Sherdog as part of a content-sharing agreement with CraveOnline.com. News, interviews and fight videos will be highlighted leading up to the Chuck Liddell-Quinton Jackson Ultimate Fighting rematch on May 26.
Lifetime Movie Network, William Morris Agency, Women in Film Los Angeles and The Hollywood Reporter are sponsoring a national competition to discover the next generation of female filmmakers. The winning films will be featured on-air on LMN and will be shown in their entirety on LMN’s website. The top four entries will receive cash prizes and have the opportunity to meet with representatives of the William Morris Agency.
Microsoft set a September date for the launch of Halo 3. The original version of the first-person shooter game help put Xbox on the map, selling over 14 million units to date.
VideoEgg secured rights to distribute nine exclusive episodes of the online sitcom The Burg across its network of sites including Bebo, Hi5, Tagged and Slide, beginning in June 2007. Motorola will sponsor the run.
Verizon is offering a free interactive tool that allows users to design a video action hero in their own image and create a video game-style movie trailer to showcase their creation. Users upload a photo of themselves then utilize 3D modeling software to add the finishing touches. The tool is designed by Interpublic Group’s R/GA.
Adap.tv debuted its contextual video ad platform with video sharing site Metacafe, its first partner on the selling side. Adap.tv employs a matching technology to serve relevant pre and post roll video ads to garner higher click-through rates. The company also announced a strategic partnership with thePlatform to allow members of its publishing network to utilize the technology.
High school sports social network Takkle.com announced a partnership with America’s Best Cheer and Dance Inc. to provide an online platform for the group’s cheerleading and dance competitions. Users can now vote on their favorite cheerleading video in a competition that will award the winning team with $10,000 in gear and apparel.
Following its $110 million settlement with Napster, Warner Music Group is suing social networking site Imeen, claiming it facilitates the sharing of artists’ music and video content without permission. The suit accuses Imeen of not only refrained from preventing such theft, but also engaging in the infringing conduct itself by “duplicating, adapting, distributing and performing plaintiff’s works” through its own servers. WMG is claiming $150,000 in damages for each copyrighted work.
MySpace says it will cooperate with state attorneys seeking to remove sexual predators from the social network provided officials follow the law and issue subpoenas for their accounts, according to The New York Times.
Microsoft is following the Apple model for the next wave of Zune media players, building a factory in China to directly supervise the manufacturing process. (Microsoft contracted with Toshiba to make the first model, which should surpass 1 million units sold by June.) The next generation of Zunes will offer a variety of prices and storage capacity options.
Sling Media plans to roll out additional broadband-related services later this year such as reselling high-speed connections and offering software to boost home connection speeds. The company is also contemplating adding ads to its service from this summer when it debuts the Clip and Sling service, which lets users copy snippets of TV shows and movies and share them over the Internet.
Tivo launched Swivel Search, a new feature for broadband-connected subscribers allowing users to search for programs they like based on attributes of their current favorites. It generates suggestions based on program name, actors and viewer’s feedback.
Former Grateful Dead mandolin player David Grisman is suing YouTube for copyright infringement and deliberately refusing “to take meaningful steps to deter the rampant infringing activity readily apparent on YouTube.” This is interesting, given how permissive The Dead has always been allowing fans to tape and share recordings of their live shows.
AOL purchased a controlling interest in international ad serving company Adtech AG. Like Third Screen Media, Adtech will operate as subsidiary of AOL’s Advertising.com division. The company provides ad management and delivery applications to enable web publishers to manage online ad campaigns.
Media technology company PermissionTV formed a partnership with Omnicon’s Agency.com to create custom broadband experiences for their clients. The company also announced an agreement with Metropolitan Talent Agency to collaborate on accelerating the adoption of PermissionTV’s digital video platform by ad agencies, content owners and productions studios.
Global Digital agency LBI International acquired Atlanta-based interactive agency Creative Digital Group. LBI was formed last summer with the merger of the Netherlands’ LB Icon and Sweden’s Framfab.
~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
Top domain name registrar GoDaddy.com registered 1 million new domain names in April, a record for a single company. More than 12.8 million new web sites have been added to the net in the last five months, according to Netcraft, LTD., an increase from 7.5 million a year earlier.
Not surprisingly, “road warriors” are more tech savvy and more likely to own PDAs, HDTVs, game consoles, mp3 players and DVRs, according to Scarborough Research. Frequent travelers also over-indexed in online spending and usage, annual income and education.
Former EMI Music, MTV and Ask Jeeves executive Adam Klein was appointed President of online video network VideoEgg. Adam will focus on securing additional content partners for the network.
Frank Cartwright was hired for the new position of VP/Online Entertainment at GSN to focus on the growth of GSN.com. Frank joins from Global Gaming League, where he served as VP/Product Development and Engineering. He will report to John P. Roberts, SVP/Digital Media and Interactive Entertainment, working out of the Santa Monica office.
Media General named Kirk Read as President/Interactive. Kirk, whose web experience includes helping to create TBO.com, a venture with Media General-owned Tampa Tribune and other local outlets, takes the place of Neal Fondren, who is stepping down for personal reasons.
Avenue A/Razorfish named Darin Brown Chief Strategy Officer, responsible for analytics, technology, media, creative design, search and user experience, among other areas. He will report to Clark Kokich, worldwide President of the aQuantive unit.
News travels fast in cyberspace. The popular technology blog Engadget showed its influence on the markets yesterday, but wishes it could take it all back. At about noon PT, Engadget reported that Apple was going to have to delay the launch of the iPhone and Leopard operating system, sourcing an internal Apple email from a “trustworthy source.” Within minutes, the Apple stock took a nosedive, losing just over $4 billion in market capitalization in less than six minutes, according to an analysis by TechCrunch.com. The email turned out to be hoax! Endgadget says it was an actual internal email that was retracted shortly after it was sent out, and that Apple is now looking for the party who spoofed the internal email system.
A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange, but all have something to do with this crazy business. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
