Eager to promote it Chrome web browser, Google announced plans to begin selling laptops based on the Chrome operating system from June 15. The Chromebooks, made by manufacturers such as Acer and Samsung, will start at $350 at be available at retailers in the U.S. and Europe such as Amazon and Best Buy. (The Samsung Chromebook will cost $429 for the Wi-Fi only version and $499 for the 3G version. Acer’s Wi-Fi only version will cost $349.) Verizon will also sell 3-year 3G contracts for the computers priced at $28/mo. for up to 100 MB of wireless data usage. Google also announced a new feature to the Chrome Web Store app enabling developers to set up one-touch in-app purchases. Google will take only 5% of the purchase price – compared to 30% for Apple’s pound of flesh.
Lars Von Trier’s Zentropa production studio has launched a new online VOD film platform to distribute films and TV productions produced by Trier and his Dogme95 cohorts. Zentropa On Demand will launch on May 18 with some 100 titles, charging €4 for new releases, €3 for catalogue titles and €1 for TV episodes and short projects.
Bestselling author Charlaine Harris became the fourth author to sell over 1 million Kindle books through Amazon, joining Stieg Larsson, James Patterson and Nora Roberts.
A new 5-part animated series called DreamStates debuted on SundanceChannel.com delving into the dreams of famous musicians, actors and directors. Will Forte’s episode recounts being relentlessly chased by a giant Icelandic puffin.
Fusion and Metan have struck a distribution arrangement for the China market, where the companies will develop and distribute Fusion TV-branded online, mobile, IPTV, and television channels in China. The deal, focusing on action sports and adventure travel genres, will also extend to Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia and Taiwan.
Best Buy launched its “Trade and Save” promotion, offering $5 vouchers for trading in store-bought DVDs you no longer want. You can put the voucher toward the purchase of a select group of Blu-rays.

Health Media Network (HMN) and HealthiNation struck a deal to distribute HealthiNation’s medical education and lifestyle programming across HMN’s digital out-of-home network spanning 2,500 doctor’s offices nationwide.

The initial phase of results are back from the Advanced Advertising Media Project (AAMP) survey, an industry effort from Digitas, AAMP, the 4A’s and BlackArrow to gage interest in VOD advertising. The consensus is that it’s a medium full of potential, but still fraught with challenges:
- Metrics that approach established measurement tools already in use within the industry were identified as critical to helping advertisers understand the value of on-demand placements
- Full-scale research is required to gauge consumer awareness and usage of VOD, as well as reactions to advertising in a VOD context. Little visibility exists today
- VOD needs to be packaged as a product, and marketed to both advertisers and consumers in new ways that highlight the unique qualities of the VOD medium
- VOD affords an opportunity for advertisers to connect to consumers in a highly engaging, focused viewing environment
T-Mobile is getting ready to bring back a plan enabling users to make unlimited Wi-Fi calls from their mobile phones without using up their in-plan minutes, according to leaked documents attained by TMONews.
Warner Bros. Digital Distribution released its latest iOS App Edition movies: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” and road trip comedy “Due Date.” The app is free but the entire feature film can be purchased for $20 as an In-App Purchase, enabling downloading, streaming and access to additional bonus content.
GOP FCC Commissioner Meredith Baker, whose term expires in June, is passing through the revolving Washington door to take a job in Comcast‘s Washington lobbying office, broke the WSJ. Meredith will report directly to former NCTA Chief lobbyist Kyle McSlarrow, who was hired by Comcast to head up the office last month. (In case you’re wondering, Ms. Baker voted to approve the Comcast/NBCU merger.)
Former Bloomberg editor Matthew Goldenberg was tapped as GM of ReadersDigest.com. He reports to Dan Lagani, EVP/Reader’s Digest Association, and President, Reader’s Digest Community.

FlickLaunch.com from Berkley entrepreneurs Craig Tanner and Erik Moore is billing itself as the first independent film distribution platform built on top of Facebook. FlickLaunch provides the tools for filmmakers (who pay a min. $250 fee) to set up “Likeable” fan pages that will stream movies for free for the first 1,000 users who hit the “Like” button. After that, the magic of the social stream will hopefully take over and produce thousands of new viewers willing to pay $1 or $2 (via PayPal for now) for each 7-day rental. Films can viewed on a PC, mobile phone or tablet. The filmmaker keeps 70% and FlickLaunch keeps the now-standard 30% of the proceeds. (A FB credits option rolling out in a couple of weeks will lower the take to 50%.) The company is currently raising funds to build out a recommendation engine based on the social graph that will recommend titles to friends based on relationships, CEO Craig Tanner told Cynopsis. The experiment begins with the release of the urban crime thriller Blues from Level 33 Entertainment, streamed in whittled-down 720p quality.
