Nielsen has debuted Mobile Brand Effect – part of its Brand Effect solution suite – that’s designed to measure ad resonance within mobile apps. Using an in-app survey, it delivers performance using traditional brand life metrics such as awareness, attitude, favorability, and purchase intent. It’s also a collaborative platform, allowing stakeholders to optimize campaign performance in real time. The results are displayed in total and/or by app, segment, lifetime performance, creative, and frequency.
Animal Planet has unveiled a slate of web series that will serve as companions to its existing TV franchises, running on AnimalPlanet.com. They are:
- Shorty’s Top Dog: The 10-episode series, which is already available online, is tied to the show Pit Boss. It follows star Shorty Ross as he travels to Mexico in search of a new service dog for when his current pal retires.
- Tanked Aftershow: The 20-episode series premieres March 22. It provides a behind-the-scenes look at Tanked stars Wayde King and Brett Raymer and the ATM team, and their aquarium projects.
- Hell Cats Revisited: How Do You Like Meow? Premiering April 6, My Cat From Hell’s Jackson Galaxy catches up with families he’s helped out on the TV show.
- How to Catch a River Monster: Debuting April 7, River Monster’s Jeremy Wade dispenses advice on how he snags the mysterious freshwater fish featured in the TV show.
- Turtleman Takes Manhattan: Ernie Brown Jr., the star of Call of the Wildman, leaves Kentucky to tour Manhattan. Premiering in May, the web series will span eight episodes.
WIGS, the scripted drama YouTube channel from Jon Avnet and Rodrigo Garcia, has picked up two current shows, Blue and Lauren, for second seasons. Season two of Blue, written by Rodrigo Garcia and starring Julia Stiles as an upscale escort who is trying to hide her secret from her son, will debut on March 15 at 9pm ET with seven new episodes. The second season will actually feature 26 episodes in total, with the remaining batch becoming available on March 22, March 29, and April 5. Season two of Lauren, written by Jay Rodan and directed by Jon Avnet, will return with 12 new episodes sometime this spring. Lauren, a drama about sexual assault in the military, stars Jennifer Beals, Bradley Whitford, Mykelti Williamson, and YouTube star Justine Ezarik, among others. WIGS will also premiere a new show this spring. Paloma, written and directed by Julia Stiles, will run for four episodes is about a young woman dealing with relationship issues both in her personal and professional life. American Express and Unilever have signed on as presenting sponsor and associate sponsor, respectively, for WIGS.
FremantleMedia’s Original Productions (OP) Entertainment Network has launched Raising the Bar, a new branded web series on Hulu for Tennessee whisky-maker George Dickel. The unscripted series follows six teams of real-life builders as they construct bars using different techniques and concepts. Produced by OP Entertainment Network, the series spans six, 12-minute episodes. Thom Beers, CEO of FremantleMedia and Chairman of OP, serves as one of the executive producers of the series.
MTV, VH1, and CMT will live stream the Hangout Music Fest from May 17-19, 2013. In addition, each network’s news and editorial teams will provide access to on-stage and backstage happenings, as well as festival news and on-the-ground reporting of fashions and memorable moments, throughout the festival. Headliners and other performers include Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and Baauer (the “Harlem Shake” guy), among others.

Crackle has launched a new interactive video ad unit called cRoll, which will be available online and on the streaming service’s apps for iOS and Android devices, connected TVs, and gaming consoles. The first company to use cRoll is Disney for its upcoming feature film, Oz: The Great and Powerful. A video pre-roll will offer viewers a call-to-action to learn more about the film. If a viewer engages, a slate takes over the screen and provides additional content and info. Disney’s ads will be placed in Crackle’s feature films, TV shows, and original content channels. All cRoll units are choice-based. The technology was developed in partnership with video ad solutions provider Innovid.
Social tech company 140 Proof has launched a new solution for automotive brands, allowing them to reach targeted buyers on social and mobile apps. 140 Proof’s targeting capabilities allow automotive marketers to silo in on relevant audiences, including in-market shoppers. The company already offers pre-built audience personas like “Truck Dads,” “NASCAR Fans,” and “Eco-conscious Consumers.” Marketers can also work with 140 Proof to develop new custom audiences to fit specific campaigns, as well as use social ads to reach audiences who might be active on social media during live TV broadcasts, or extend the reach of their TV and digital video ad buys by running ads that include a video within the ad.
Centro has unveiled the Centro Planner, a new cloud-based digital media planning software for agencies. The product aims to simplify the process of digital media buying by automating operations such as site selection, RFP management, proposals, negotiations, insertion orders, communications, and ad server integration. Centro Planner has cataloged information on 13,000 publishers and vendors.
51% of ad agencies have seen an increase in demand among their clients for dynamic rich media ads, and another 20% expect to see more interest in 2013, according to the results of a new agency survey from Jivox. The rise is attributed to the availability of standardized ad formats as well as a declining interest in “static” ads. However, it’s not all roses: Overall, 88% of respondents said it’s “somewhat stressful” to “very stressful” to run rich media campaigns using current processes. Guess there’s work to be done.
Kantar Media’s analysis of ad trends related to the annual NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Championships — more lovingly known as March Madness — reveals that streaming is generally at its highest during the first week of the event, driven by a combination of at-work viewership and multiple games being played simultaneously.
Bravo is partnering with Old Navy to program an interactive TV experience tied to the second season of It’s a Brad Brad World. Bravo’s Play Live service will allow viewers to interact with Old Navy-sponsored content during four episodes of the show’s second season. Launching with the premiere episode last night, Old Navy-sponsored questions appear on screen, and viewers can answer them via Play Live, which is accessible at BravoTV.com/PlayLive and on the Bravo Now app. This interactivity will extend to a custom 30-second spot that Old Navy will run during its four sponsored episodes. It’s a Brad Brad World airs every Wednesday night at 10pm ET.
Dan Hodges is joining ChaCha as its new President. In this role, he will oversee all efforts in sales, marketing, business development, and public relations for the company. Hodges will be based in ChaCha’s NY office.
SoloHealth has named Kevin Davis as its new Director/Ad Sales. Based in LA, Davis will be responsible for west coast health & wellness advertisers airing video and display campaigns on SoloHealth kiosks screens inside retailers like Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, and Safeway.

The Roku 3 features a new user interface (UI), which has been redesigned to make it easier for users to access channels and content. For instance, the Roku Channel Store as well as the search function are now integrated into the home screen. The new UI will roll out to other Roku devices as a free software update in April. The other big feature of the Roku 3 is a “private listening mode.” The device comes with headphones, which can be plugged into the remote in order to watch programming in private.
