Cynopsis: DIGITAL
03/04/10
Good morning, it’s Thursday, March 4, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Tivo finally introduced a new set-top that streamlines the process of viewing videos on broadband-based services such as Netflix and YouTube. Instead of having to awkwardly switch over to a separate menu, the interface integrates web video with broadcast and cable programming, allowing you to search for shows across the TV database and the web. The two new Flash-based “Premiere” models ($300 w/a 45 hour HD hard drive, $500 for 150 hrs.) will feature a slide-out QWERTY keyboard like the upcoming D-Link Boxee Box, greatly improving web surfing and social networking functionality. Tivo also upgraded its wireless broadband adapter to the faster “N” standard (an $89 add on.) Look for the new models at Best Buy and Amazon in April.
Apple is in negotiations with film and TV studios to allow iTunes store users to purchase and store content on the company’s cloud-based servers for easy retrieval from multiple devices, reports CNET. One concern is that hard drives of the upcoming iPad will fill up quickly if users purchase and store videos on the device regularly. For their part, the studios are concerned that proprietary DRM software will give Apple too much control over the content and make interoperability with non-Apple devices difficult.
In addition to pitching them a similar cloud-based distribution solution for music tracks, Apple is leaning on music distributors to stop cutting exclusive promotions with Amazon‘s rival MP3 store, per Billboard. Amazon has been offering customers exclusive access to new releases, beginning with Mariah Carey’s “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,” a day before they are made available elsewhere.
Mobile operator 3 UK and On Demand Group announced the debut of Warner Bros. International Branded Services’ WarnerTV service, giving mobile subscribers on-demand access to full-length episodes of Warner TV shows including Two and Half Men, The Mentalist, The Closer and Fringe.
Turner Classic Movies is pitching in to support the Help Save Cahuenga Peak campaign - the home of the famous Hollywood sign — reporting on the campaign both on air and online and donating 10 passes to the inaugural TCM Classic Film Festival, kicking off at the Roosevelt Hotel on April 22. The campaign needs to raise $12.5 million by April 14 to buy the 138 acres on Cahuenga Peak in order to add it to Griffith Park.
Breakfast Club star Judd Nelson and adult-turned legit star Traci Lords are starring in what may be the first original web show produced for the iPhone. Creators Brian and Dean Ronalds have put together the show, Here and Now, that follows the journey of a barbershop owner who dares to wish for a new lease on life after blowing out a single candle on a magic cupcake. (Judd Nelson also happens to be starring in an unrelated feature called Mayor Cupcake with co-star and producer Leah Thompson.) The catch is that the app only downloads with the first 5-minute “appisode”, each subsequent one (4 have been produced) will cost an additional 99 cents/each. That adds up.
Hallmark Channel is hosting a wine & cheese party on its Facebook Page this Saturday to promote the premiere of its wine-themed original “Uncorked.” Julie Brosterman, CEO of Women & Wine, will be on hand to answer questions about particular vintages.
Online research company Omniture, acquired last year by Adobe for $1.8 billion, has expanded its online marketing suite designed to help marketers target, track and optimize display and mobile ads on Facebook. Customers will be able to utilize Omniture’s revamped Online Marketing Suite to buy media on Facebook and Facebook apps and measure their influence across digital marketing channels, comparing Facebook campaign metrics with other media. App measurement tools have also been added for Blackberry, Symbian, Palm and the upcoming iPad.
RealNetworks settled its lawsuit with 6 Hollywood studios, agreeing to cease selling the RealDVD DVD-copying software, which the studios alleged violated content copyright protections. The Seattle-based company has also agreed to reimburse the studios a total of $4.5 million in legal fees.
Rep. John Dingell (D-Michigan) criticized the FCC‘s plan to reallocate wireless spectrum owned by TV broadcasters in a speech at the NAB leadership conference Tues. night, per TVNewsCheck. The NAB has also refused to support the FCC’s voluntary plan, floated by FCC chairman Julius Genachowski last month.
Comcast’s white label online video company, thePlatform introduced a new social media player that allows media companies to publish ad supported premium video sharable across social networks. The company is also releasing a Player’s Developer’s Kit, providing standard features to enable sharing of clips while preserving rev share agreements between content owners, advertisers and distributors. Supported platforms include Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, StumbleUpon, Digg, Yahoo Buzz and Windows Live.
Mountain View, CA-based Ooyala is jumping into the already crowded TV Everywhere space offering an integrated paywall authentication system to allow publishers to insure that only paying subscribers can view their content. The platform supports HD streaming as well as delivery to the Boxee and Roku digital set-top boxes.
Nokia‘s Ovi Store added the Skype Voice Over-IP calling app, making it available to a pool of more than 200 million Nokia smartphone users worldwide. It is Skype’s second major wireless deal after it struck an agreement with Verizon in Feb. Skype allows users to make calls to any of the network’s 520 million registered members across the globe for free.
ESPN‘s free Men’s Tournament Challenge app for the iPhone, due out around Selection Sunday, will allow fans to sign up, join groups, check their brackets and follow tourney updates in real-time. The online bracket game yielded more than 4.6 million entries last year, according to the network.
The next-generation MXP4 music format is being utilized in a new iPhone app from EMI-signed French DJ/Producer David Guetta that allows fans to remix and mash up his hit song Se*y Chick. Developer RedShift worked with MXP4 on the app and is also planning versions for Android, Symbian and Windows phones.
Paul Kontonis, co-founder of web production and distribution studio For Your Imagination, has been hired by Edelman’s MATTER sports and marketing division as VP/Branded Entertainment. Paul will manage multiplatform branded entertainment shows for the division (current clients include Armor All, Experian and Brita), working with New York-based GM Andy Marks.
Veteran entertainment industry executives Steve Mosko, President of Sony Pictures Television, Tony Vinciquerra, Chairman and CEO of the FOX Networks Group, and Dick Lippin, Chairman and CEO of The Lippin Group, have been appointed Co-Chairs of the newly formed Paley Center for Media Television Awards Planning Committee.

Ron Howard took some time off from the set of Parenthood to direct this online video pitch on FunnyorDie.com for financial reform in the U.S. Written by Funny or Die co-founder Adam McKay and Al Jean, it brings back all of the SNL cast members who played Presidents during past administrations, dating back to Chevy Chase playing Gerald Ford. (Chevy enters with one of his patented pratfalls.) Like ghosts of Christmas past, the former Presidents visit President Obama to rub it in that it has fallen on him to clean up the mess. The video ends with a call to action from activist group Americans For Financial Reform.
