Steve Jobs took time off his medical leave to personally introduce the second generation iPad on Wed., slated to ship March 11 at the same starting price of $499. Apple‘s thinner, lighter tablet is powered by a new dual core A5 chip that Jobs says is twice as fast and will come with front and rear facing cameras for FaceTime chats. An optional $39 HDMI connector will enable users to connect it to their flat screen TVs. Another cool accessory is a “Smart Cover” that folds into a stand for typing or viewing videos and puts the iPad to sleep when you’re not using it. He also reminded the audience what the iPad was really for – making sales through iTunes. The media store now has more than 200 million registered users complete with credit card info. “Very likely this is the most accounts with cards anywhere on the internet,” said Jobs.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Google
will expand its app Market to include its experimental television platform Google TV, according to comments made by Ashish Arora, Product Manager of Google TV at Logtitech, at the OTTCon on Tuesday. The platform has been widely criticized for its lack of personalization features so it will be interesting to see what kind of apps show up for the device.
 
HBO
has expanded its digital HBO Go online video offering to include access to more than 1,400 titles, including entire series of classic original shows such as The Sopranos, Deadwood and Sex and the City. (The selection had previously been spotty, with only select seasons or partial seasons available on a rotating basis.) Access to HBO Go, which has yet to pop up on any Over-the-top TV platforms, is available to Comcast, Verizon FiOS, Cox and U-Verse HBO subscribers at no extra cost.
 
Random House
struck a deal with Apple to make its entire catalog of 17k eBooks available on the iBookstore, including the works of Stieg Larsson, John Grisham, Dan Brown and Cormac McCarthy.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Augmented reality platform GoldRun is making its first foray into the entertainment sector with the “Catch A Con” Sweepstakes around the new A&E series, Breakout Kings. The promotion invites iPhone users to hunt down augmented-reality fugitives hiding out in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco; each time they capture a con they are entered for a chance to win cash prizes ranging from $500 to $2500. Players can also take pictures of themselves nabbing convicts that will be featured on the A&E Facebook page.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Content distributor HubPages, which is doesn’t want to be confused with those Content Farms Google is so set on suppressing, is launching a new Ad Program to allow writers who contribute to the site earn revenue from “premium” ad networks and direct sales, based on how many impressions they receive. The idea is to attract a higher echelon of ad content to help monetize the content by contextually matching ads with the articles’ content. HubPages’ archive now includes over 1.2 million articles from a pool of 220,000 contributors.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
The same day the new iPad was announced, Rovi unveiled a new integrated white label guide application for cable operators that allows programmers to port content over from set-tops, smart phones and tablets, including the aforementioned iPad. (PA-based Armstrong Cable is trialing the TotalGuide xD solution for the iPad.) Customizable features include multiplatform search, recommendation indexing from friends and Rovi editors, social networking integration and remote DVR scheduling, channel tuning or VOD selection. 
 
Tivo continues to hemorrhage subscribers and cash, reporting a loss of $34.4 million during Q4 ending Jan. 31 and a reduction of 223,000 subscribers. The company blamed net losses on holiday subsidies for hardware, which lowered the price of the new Tivo Premiere set-top to $99 in exchange for higher monthly subscription fees.
 
Yahoo is in talks with majority shareholder Softbank Corp. to sell its stake in the Yahoo Japan subsidiary, according to the WSJ – long one of the few bright spots for the company.
 
Amazon announced it is bringing its cloud computing platform to the island nation of Japan, the second launch of the product in the Asian region. Zynga, Gumi, Inc., Cookpad and Summo are already using Amazon Web services in Japan.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
The worldwide IPTV subscriber base will double to over 70 million, up from its current market size of 36.5 million, according to a new IMS Research study. The market is expanding as cable operators explore options to utilize DOCSIS to deliver linear IP video and satellite operators deploy hybrid boxes utilizing IP connections for VOD. Much of the growth is expected to come from China (growing at a double-digit clip) and Latin America, which is still in its infancy.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Apple’
s Garage Band and iMovie application have been released for the iPad, the former supporting 8-track mixing.
 
The company also introduced an update the iOS mobile operating system coming out on March 11 (the same day as the iPad 2) that includes a number of new features including improved Safari web browsing, enhanced support for AirPlay (the app that allows you to stream music wirelessly through home networks) and a new “home sharing” feature for iTunes, also allowing you to stream music and videos within iTunes to an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch over a local WiFi network. The new Personal Hotspot feature will also now be available for GSM-enabled iPhone 4s, allowing users to share a data connection with up to five devices.
 
Discovery Channel has launched a new free socially-oriented iPad app from Bottle Rocket Apps that allows viewers to check in to shows and share what they are watching on Facebook and Twitter. The app doesn’t feature full episodes, but rather a smattering of clips, photos and additional info, including articles and videos about current events from Discovery News related to the programming.
 
Inergize Digital, Weather Central and AdPay have licensed their News Synergy iOS and Android apps to 28 television stations with a total of 90 apps now available in the Apple App Store and Android Market. The apps deliver text-based local news, sports and weather alerts.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Shazam, maker of the app that identifies songs by holding up your smartphone to the speaker, announced that MTV Networks co-founder John Sykes has joined its Board of Directors.
 
Jim Millman
has been promoted to VP/NCM Properties by marketing firm National CineMedia’s NCM Networks to lead a new sponsorship and properties division. He will work with brands to create strategic sponsorship programs, as well as acquire new content for NCM Fathom Entertainment.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Digital entertainment company Rovi announced it completed the acquisition of SideReel, one of the leading TV show tracking sites, and it has launched its own preview and discovery service with the unimaginative name of AllRovi.com. SideReel, which launched its own iOS App last month, indexes over 24k shows and 530k thousand episodes, allowing you to search, browse, share and record which episodes you’ve watched to build a personal TV database of sorts. AllRovi.com will also cover the film and music side of things, indexing 27 million tracks and 500k movies and deploying a recommendation engine to push titles to users based on past activity. The site also allows you to sample music tracks, video and movie trailers, and make purchases directly through iTunes or Amazon. Given Rovi’s extensive ties to the programming guide space, it promises to be a major player in the evolution of how consumers search for, choose, interact with and share entertainment content going forward and SideReel, which will continue to operate independently, should be a great incubator of new ideas.
