Cynopsis: DIGITAL
3/29/07
Good Morning, it’s Thursday, March 29, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
MTV networks expanded its partnership with Sprint to now include 14 live streaming and video on demand channels, making it the largest carrier of MTVN content. The deals includes:
- VOD content from 10 MTVN channels, including MTV’s The Real World, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with John Stewart and Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants.
- Streaming content from, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV
- New mobile (WAP) websites from MTV, VH1 and Comedy Central
- A new 106 & Park Mobile Fan Club from BET
- A mobile video channel form GameTrailers.com, launching to Amp’d Mobile customers beginning in the second quarter, extending across all carriers in the coming months. A new original series Go Gaming will commemorate the launch, devoted to coverage of the mobile gaming space.
Viacom partners with over 80 mobile carriers around the world, serving a footprint of 1.2 billion subscribers. It creates nearly 1,000 clips and over 100 hours of wireless video programming per month. Comedy Central Mobile’s “South Park 10: the Game” also debuted yesterday, a 40-level action/adventure mobile game that will be available across multiple carriers in the U.S. and Europe. RealNetworks mobile game studio collaborated.
A&E Networks, anime distributor ADV Films, National Geographic and extreme sports producer TotalVid.com have joined Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE entertainment platform, collectively adding more than 1,500 hours of downloadable content. Paramount Pictures will also begin offering feature films on Xbox, including Braveheart and World Trade Center. Furthermore, Warner Bros. will begin providing direct-to-video releases such as Babylon 5: The Lost Tales in high-definition the day they are released on DVD. The Xbox LIVE community is now 6 million users strong. Downloads of LIVE television and film content are growing in double digits each month, according to the company. The content is available in a pay-per-download model, with points being used instead of a credit card. 1,600 points retails for $19.95. HDTV shows cost 240 points per episode, standard def shows are 160 points and movies range from 240 to 480 points each.
More mobile news from the CTIA 2007 Wireless Show:
The History Channel launched a mobile WAP site in the UK, offering a range of tiers including a free service, a subscriptions service and a pay-per-download option. Features include “This Day in History” with historical facts, quizzes and video highlights as well as short form video, wallpapers and games. Arvato Mobile, a subsidiary of Bertelsmann, will build and distribute the platform, which launched yesterday.
Not to be undone in the mobile space, YouTube is working on its own mobile website that is slated to launch in the U.S. after the company’s current exclusive deal with Verizon Wireless V Cast service expires, according to the website gigaOM.com.
Westwood One’s daily Dennis Miller radio talk show will be distributed via uVuMobile’s Mobilecasting platform beginning April 30. A free application enabling live mobile streaming of the weekday morning show will be available at www.uvumobile.com for the next 30 days.
E! viewers can go to E!online during the next two weeks to vote to save one of broadcast television’s shows on the brink of being cancelled. Five out of the last six years, the show that garnered the most votes ended up surviving, thanks in part to a personal pitch by E! Online columnist Kristin Veitch. Last year, two million people voted and The CW’s One Tree Hill won out.
NBCU’s iVillage.com launched a national advocacy program to raise awareness for women’s causes related to healthcare, education and involvement. IVillage Cares will feature blog entries from celebrities such as Mariska Hargitay and Marlo Thomas, as well as links back to important advocacy sites such as www.stopglobalwarming.com.
The RTNDA announced this year’s Edward R. Murrow award winners for excellence in journalism. The following local TV websites won in their regions. Congratulations guys-keep up the good work!
KING5.com, KTVB.com, NBC4.tv, KUAM.com, KSL.com, KARE11.com, Channel3000.com, KSDK.com, 49ABCNews.com, KHOU.com, KVUE.com, 10tv.com, 14WFIE.com, WCNC.com, WBIR.com, NBC13.com, WAFF.com, TheBostonChannel.com, NBC10.com, 9WSYR.com, WVEC.com, WSLS.com, FirstCoastNews.com, CityNews.ca
VOOM HD Networks added 225 new hours of HD programming to its agreement with ID Distribution, which is representing the Rainbow Media subsidiary for foreign program sales. New VOOM HD offerings include Full Frontal Fashion 2007, Treasure Seekers, GameSpotting and Magnificent Obsessions.
TVN Entertainment launched a new VOD channel Caught On Demand, chocked full police chases, taped robberies and other such hi jinx. Most programs are 5-7 minutes in length and consist of 3-6 short segments, with titles such as “Amazing Crashes” and “Dumbest Criminals.” It is TVN’s 7th VOD network and will launch to over 2.5 million cable subscribers.
Fans of MTV’s The Hills not lucky enough to attend Monday night’s live finale party at MTV’s Times Square studio can go to www.thehills.MTV.com to view live streaming video of the event, interact with other fans and visit the Virtual Hills, where the winner of The Hills “Fashion Challenge” will be crowned. The contest is a season-long competition challenging fans to create and submit their own fashion line. The winner will get a presence on the virtual hills homepage to promote their own Vhills store.
Online ad giant DoubleClick is in talks with Microsoft and other potential suitors about a possible sale, according to The Wall Street Journal. The company is now majority-owned by San Francisco-based private equity firm Hellman & Friedman, which is reportedly seeking at least $2 billion for the company. DoubleClick took in $150 million in revenue last year, more than $100 million of which came from serving ads.
Politicians are still going back and forth over whether or not there’s enough tax dollars ear-marked for digital converter boxes to help analog TV homes receive signals after the February 17, 2009 switch to all-digital. At a House subcommittee meeting, Democrats argued funding for 22.5 million $40 coupons (which can be used to purchase converter boxes from retailers) will be insufficient, as there are an estimated 70 million U.S. homes that use analog sets not connected to cable or satellite. The boxes are expected to cost between $50 and $70, according to Cnet.com.
MTV Networks announced Pepsi and Intel Corp. have signed on as charter sponsors for a variety of MTVN’s mobile offerings, the first time the company has sold advertising across its entire mobile portfolio. The brands will feature prominently on the MTV and Comedy Central mobile TV channels, the MTV, VH1 and Comedy Central mobile websites debuting today and the CMT, Logo, Nickelodeon, Spike TV and TV Land WAP sites planned to launch during second quarter.
Yahoo! and MobiTV formed a mobile advertising alliance allowing brands to place mobile video ads on MobiTV’s channels. Yahoo will provide the technology to deliver commercials, text and banner ads across MobiTV’s live and premium video content as part of its newly revamped Yahoo! Mobile Publisher Services.
George Stewart was named SVP of Media Sales for online micro-network distributor Next New Networks. A sales veteran of online firms such as Yahoo! and Launch.com, George will execute a new three-pronged advertising strategy which includes collaborating with “pure product endemics” (products which are an essential fit with the network’s community) as well as “industry endemics” (relevant brands which aren’t always present in the community.) Royal Purple motor oil will begin a partnership with Next New Networks’ VOD Cars and Fast Lane Daily from April.
Professional video game league Major League Gaming hired three executives in the areas of digital media and sales. Todd Unger will serve as EVP/GM, Digital, responsible for growing digital properties and strengthening the MLG brand. Peter Cosco was named EVP, Global Sales and Partnerships. Both will report to Matthew Bromberg, President and COO of MLG. Under Peter will be John Lane as SVP, Global Sales and Partnerships.
You’ve heard of social networking sites, shopping sites and video sharing sites. How about a social shopping video site? Www.expotv.com is a place where consumers go to view consumer-generated video reviews of products. Everything from Arm & Hammer baking soda to hot new mobile devices are reviewed and demoed online by presumably unbiased reviewers. There are ongoing forums, customizable features and more than a dozen product categories to help find what you’re looking for. There’s even something called the “100 club””, for reviewers who have uploaded more than 100 “videopinion” reviews since joining.
