Good morning, it’s Thursday, March 24, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
The so far awkwardly-executed TV Everywhere movement took a step forward yesterday as Adobe introduced a new authentication solution that will enable pay TV providers to easily prepare their content for distribution on multiple devices and platforms. Users will be spared from having to log in, seek validation or download a plug in each time they log into a different site or platform, says Adobe, as “Adobe Pass” will automatically work behind the scenes to authenticate users and reveal only the content they have paid to view. Turner Broadcasting, MTV Networks, Comcast and Dish Network have already agreed to deploy the system. Leading content delivery networks Brightcove and Limelight also announced they are integrating Adobe Pass to speed adoption along.
Place this in the sign of things to come folder – when the premium network’s current deal with Netflix expires this summer, Showtime originals such as Dexter and Californication will no longer be available for streaming. Showtime struck the current deal years ago before Netflix was so widespread – 20 million subs and counting – and threatening to the cable industry. Rival HBO has never allowed Netflix to stream its original content.
Reports continue to surface about how easy it is to breach the New York Times paywall in Canada, where the paper has already launched its subscription service.
Another great online fish-out-of-water tale has premiered in MyDamnChannel’s new original Gigi: Almost American featuring the physical comedy of Josh Gad, star of Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s Broadway Musical, “The Book of Mormon.” The show is a co-production of BBC Worldwide Productions, MyDamnChannel and comedy troupe, The Lost Nomads. The first two episodes are up now, with new episodes premiering each Wed.
Dailymotion announced a partnership with online address channel FORA.tv to launch an Education themed on-demand content hub. It features videos drawn from top conferences, universities and public forums including The New York Public Library, Wired, and Long Now Foundation.
The Weather Channel is launching a multi-tiered spring campaign with the Home Depot across television, online and on mobile that features hyper-localized lawn & garden projects, gardening tips and advice developed specifically for the user’s location. The programmer will give consumers insight into what to plant in their area and when, presenting weather forecasting to help inform their decisions.
ComScore filed a countersuit against Nielsen and its rival NetRatings division in U.S. District Court after Nielsen filed a claim on a March 16 alleging that ComScore had violated its intellectual property rights, reports Reuters. Both companies are seeking unspecified damages and injunctive relief.
Broadcast newsroom software provider Bitcentral is showcasing a new browser-based system at NAB designed to extend editing capability to every journalist and allow newsrooms to more quickly turn around breaking news content.
Apple has duly removed the offending “gay cure” Exodus International app from the U.S. App Store after more than 146k signed the change.org petition.
Almost half of all American adults (47%) report that they get at least some local news and information on their cellphone or tablet computer, according to a new Pew Internet & American Life report. Yet, surprisingly, only 13% of the 2k+ mobile device owners surveyed said they utilize an app to help get local news or info. The numbers are troubling, considering that apps are the main vehicle for digital content delivery. When pressed on the value of online access to their local newspaper, 23% of survey respondents say they would pay $5 a month to get full access to local newspaper content online. When asked if they would pay $10 per month, only 18% of adults say yes.
Nearly 30 million Americans accessed financial services accounts (bank, credit card, or brokerage) via their mobile device during Q4 2010, an increase of 54% from Q4 2009, according to a Mobile Financial Advisor report from ComScore. Preference for online access and security concerns topped the list of reasons why users are reluctant to bank on their phones.
Skype’s live video platform Qik has launched two new iPhone apps (a free one, Qik Video Connect, and a “plus” version for $2.99) to expand upon Qik’s video calling and broadcast capabilities. The app enables two-way video calling, allows you to record video emails and features seamless Facebook and Twitter integration, making it easy to ‘broadcast yourself’ in real time. The $2.99 version adds bells and whistles such as HD quality, video editing tools and real-time effects and filters.
Getting that spring craving for Girl Scout Cookies? Now there’s an app for that. The official Girl Scouts of the USA Cookie Finder app for the iPhone or iPod Touch, developed by New York based StudioE9, features GPS capability, pointing you toward the nearest cookie stand.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has retained his seat on the Walt Disney Co. Board of Directors after a vote during the company’s annual shareholder meeting yesterday. Mr. Jobs remains the Disney’s largest individual shareholder with more than 7% of the company’s stock.
Apple‘s head of engineering Bertrand Serlet, who has worked with Steve Jobs dating back to his NeXT days, is leaving the company after leading the development of Mac’s OS X operating system. Craig Federighi, Apple’s VP/Mac Software Engineering, will assume Bertrand’s responsibilities and report to Steve Jobs.
Groupon COO and President Rob Solomon is leaving the company as the start-up apparently prepares for an IPO, according to an email sent out to Groupon staffers and forwarded to Cynopsis: Digital. Rob will stay on until a replacement is found and will continue to advise the company “into perpetuity.”
Univision has named broadcast veteran Jose Valle to the position of President of Univision Radio, after serving as VP and GM of Univision’s Los Angeles station. Jose reports to Peter Walker, President of Univision Local Media.
Zoom Media and Marketing has tapped former AETN researcher Dan Rosenfeld for the newly created position of Director of Research and Insights. He will be based in Zoom’s New York office.
Yahoo has introduced a new search service dubbed Search Direct that offers real time “answers” to typed-in questions. (The service is currently only available at this URL but Yahoo is planning to add the feature to other Yahoo sites and regions later this year.) The company’s answer to Google’s new instant character-by-character search offering, Search Direct will pull up the top 10 trending searches before you even begin typing (accompanied with paid ads) and stack search previews up as it predicts what you’re looking for before you finish typing. The service is certainly faster than the old Yahoo search, but it smacks of “me too” vis a vi Google. At least Microsoft’s Bing went in a different direction, emphasizing content and stunning visuals. This newest idea is unlikely to arrest Yahoo’s slide in the search arena, expected to drop from 10% to 8% of the U.S. market by year-end, according to research group eMarketer.
