Is it friend-finding code or stalker software? A new Facebook feature that utilizes facial recognition software to help users search for friends and acquaintances on the platform is raising new privacy concerns around the world as EU data regulators are already planning a probe into the practice. The automatic tagging feature, which was expanded from the U.S. to a host of other countries on Tuesday, enables Facebook to search and suggest names of friends it finds in photos uploaded to the platform, regardless of whether people have been physically tagged or users have opted into the program. The debate around such obtrusive features always revolves around whether they are rolled out as default setting or “opt-in” add-ons. To disable the feature, users can go into their account’s “customize settings” panel, choose “things others share,” hit “edit settings” then disable the “suggest photos of me to friends” option from the drop-down menu.

GroupM (parent company of agencies such as Maxus, MEC, MediaCom and Mindshare) has developed a new digital media buying policy designed to prevent its clients’ ads from appearing on websites that distribute illegally obtained content. The policy involves coming up with a list of more than 2,000 offending sites and includes anti-piracy language for insertion orders that prohibits vendors from placing GroupM clients’ advertising on these sites containing pirated content. The language will be built into all future contract terms and conditions with publishers and ad networks, effective immediately.
Cloud-based content services announced by Amazon, Google and Apple may do more to combat online piracy than government regulations because technology is the ultimate key to building more secure platforms, according to an address by Victoria Espinel, coordinator of U.S. intellectual property enforcement, given at the World Copyright Summit in Brussels. “The flexibility of the cloud may help spur the development of compelling legal alternatives,” she was quoted saying by Reuters.
Google is taking advantage of a new data feature within HTML5 to help link users to additional works of the author of articles and stories they are searching for. A special author markup tag can be picked up within search results that will drive users to an author page that describes and identifies the author and provides links to his or her other works.
