Cynopsis: DIGITAL
06/09/11

Good morning, it’s Thursday, June 9, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Is it friend-finding code or stalker software? A new Facebook feature that utilizes facial recognition software to help users search for friends and acquaintances on the platform is raising new privacy concerns around the world as EU data regulators are already planning a probe into the practice. The automatic tagging feature, which was expanded from the U.S. to a host of other countries on Tuesday, enables Facebook to search and suggest names of friends it finds in photos uploaded to the platform, regardless of whether people have been physically tagged or users have opted into the program. The debate around such obtrusive features always revolves around whether they are rolled out as default setting or “opt-in” add-ons. To disable the feature, users can go into their account’s “customize settings” panel, choose “things others share,” hit “edit settings” then disable the “suggest photos of me to friends” option from the drop-down menu.
