Cynopsis: DIGITAL

6/07/07

Good Morning, it’s Thursday, June 7, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

It looks like the nuts are running the asylum at CBS! The network is bringing back the post-apocalyptic drama Jericho for a 7 episode, mid-season run after a tireless online fan campaign convinced executives to remove it from the scrap heap. (The campaign included fans sending nuts to CBS headquarters; more than 20 tons were received.) CBS Entertainment Chief Nina Tassler posted an open letter to fans on the Jericho message boards announcing the news and reminding them more viewers would have to be converted for the show to live on. Now it’s time for the digital CBS Audience Network to kick into gear to catch newcomers up on the storyline and keep fan enthusiasm stoked until the new episodes return.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

CBS purchased Chicago-based online ticket marketplace TicketReserve that allows sports fans to buy tickets to major events well in advance of the date they are held. The price fluctuates depending on the likelihood of your team making it to the big game or series. For instance, Lions tickets to Superbowl XLII are going for $24 each while Pats tickets are going for $725 a piece. CBS SportsLine.com, CBS Sports, CSTV, CBS Radio and CBS Interactive plan to work with the site on cross promotions.

NBC Universal will enable viral distribution of its content through interactive Flash-based widgets powered by Arlington, VA-based Clearspring Technologies. The privately-held company provides a platform for creating, distributing or tracking small interactive applications that add functionality to blogs, social networking profiles, websites or personal start up pages. NBC will initially launch widgets embedded with content from Dateline, Hardball with Chris Matthews, Meet the Press, NBC Sports, DotComedy.com and iVillage.com.

Ghost House Pictures will produce two original internet series for online/on demand service FEARnet. Ghost House is the new media joint venture founded by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane.  Devils Trade premiered this week, following the travails of three teens cursed after purchasing an item off of “DevilsTrade.com.”

Court TV relaunched its R.E.D. broadband site featuring weekly clips from the real-life crime series Most Shocking and the new 14-episode Speeders series, capturing motorists on camera as they run afoul of the law.

Comcast‘s user-generated site Ziddio.com and Henry Rollins are soliciting online “rants” to find an on-air host for the upcoming Rollins Show marathon on IFC. Henry will choose the winning 30-second entry on one of 11 chosen topics.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

MLB
may not want to play ball with the SlingPlayer, but the NHL is game. Sling Media made its first pro sports licensing deal, signing the NHL to participate in the Clip+Sling feature now in private beta that allows users to post and share clips with other users. Users will be able to clip and upload live or recorded segments of league action to a destination site accessible to anyone with internet access. Sign up here to participate in the testing.

Fourth-ranked search engine Ask.com is launching a new “Ask3D” service that responds to queries with a three-part screen including links, lists of related searches and search results from blogs, video, photo, news and shopping sites. The IAC/InteractiveCorp company will spend roughly $100 million to market the next-generation service. Ask.com also signed a deal with video search specialist blinkx to enhance its video search engine.

Netflix shares were bid up on rumors of a possible buyout by Amazon.com. The thinking is that Amazon could combine its Unbox download-to-own video service with Netflix’s Watch Now online rental service.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME)
and @radical.media have a new first-look development agreement which will allow the global distribution of traditional and non-traditional content for multi-platform use. The partnership also means more branded entertainment content will be development and distributed worldwide. The pact will further expand on the current collaboration between the two entities surrounding the series Iconoclasts which is produced by @radical.media for Sundance Channel and Grey Goose Entertainment and distributed in 39 countries by FME.

Exalead introduced new video search application to allow users to access millions of video clips indexed from popular online video portals, including YouTube, Dailymotion, Metacafe, Vodeo, Kewego and IFILM. Users can search by categories including sports, music, film and entertainment. Videos are indexed by author, title, date, description, duration, tags and category.  Users can sort results by relevance, ratings or number and frequency of views.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

GSN is partnering with U.K.-based Two Way TV to enable viewers to play along with televised game shows in real time using their mobile phones. Two Way’s Simcast technology will be integrated with GSN’s Monday night line up of casino programming this summer including High Stakes Poker and World Series of Black Jack initially, with more game show and reality show integrations planned in the future.

The NCTA and Cable in the Classroom launched a new website to educate families on safe internet usage. PointSmartClickSafe.org utilizes a Flash interface to brief parents and kids on such topics as cyberbullying, copyright infringement, filtering software and “netiquette.” Cable operators and programming networks are expected to add links to the site from their consumer web sites.

France‘s professional soccer and tennis leagues and Cherry Lane Music Publishing joined a proposed class-action lawsuit against YouTube for copyright infringement originally filed in May by England’s Premier League football division and music publisher Bourne. Attorneys for the case launched a website to invite other plaintiffs to join the case, in the event a judge grants it class-action status.

LIN TV signed an agreement to utilized VMIX‘s tools and technology to showcase user-generated videos, photos, audio, blogs, ratings, polls and other community-driven content on its station internet sites. Future portals and micro-sites are also planned.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Internet ad spending
totaled $2.7 billion for the first quarter, an increase of 16.7% over 1q 2006, says TNS Media Intelligence, even as total media spending declined slightly. IAC/Interactive Corp. was by far the biggest internet display spender with an outlay of $78.2 million during the quarter. Online ad spending by the top 50 overall advertisers increased by an average of 20%.

Google Maps
will begin embedding interactive ad applications called “Mapplets” enabling local advertisers to add image and text messages to their locales that pop up when a mouse waves over them. Like in AdSense, Google and the publisher share in revenue generated each time a user clicks on the application.

Ebay struck a partnership with Bid4Spots Inc. to create an online auction for commercial airtime on more than 2,300 radio stations via the eBay Media Marketplace web site currently being tested for TV ads. This puts eBay in direct competition with Google, which announced plans in April to sell ads for more than 675 Clear Channel stations.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Forty-four percent of 1,422 U.S. online video users surveyed by the Online Publishers Association reported that they watch online clips at least weekly while 73% do so at least once a month. News/current events sites proved the most popular genre, followed by weather then humor sites. Eighty percent said they had seen video ads, and 52% of that group said they took some action, such as visiting a company web site (31%), going to a store to learn more about a product (15%) or making a purchase (12%). Surprisingly 30-second ads were found more relevant and effective than shorter pre or post rolls.

Nielsen announced a new service to measure video and internet usage on mobile phones. Nielsen Wireless will use information culled from the People Meter TV sample to report on media behavior and audience demographics segmented by carrier, helping carriers devise more effective campaigns and identify how subscribers consume media in the home.

The worldwide online game market is forecasted to grow from $3.4 billion in 2005 to over $13 billion in 2011, according to a new report from DFC Intelligence.  This growth will be driven by the increase in broadband households, higher PC penetration and more connected console video game systems, leading to a growing number of consumer subscription services, the emergence of online digital distribution and increasing acceptance of games as an advertising mechanism.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Jessica Stedman Guff was named Executive Producer of ABC News Now, and Christopher Sheridan was named Executive Producer of ABCNEWS.com. Meanwhile Michael Clemente will continue in his role as Senior Executive Producer of ABC News Digital Media. All three executives will report to Paul Slavin, SVP/Worldwide Newsgathering.

Gurpreet Kalra will join Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel as Director, Information Technology, reporting to Adam Farkas, VP/I.T. Gurpreet worked most recently at Court TV as Senior Network Engineer.

Agency.com promoted Kathleen Flynn to President of its Chicago office. She has been with the online agency for more than seven years, most recently serving as VP/Client Partners.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Fatman Scoop and Wife Shanda are the stars of Man and Wife TV, some of the earthiest folks in the internet entertainment space. Many of their webisodes revolve around the two bickering at each other as they lie in bed or try to perform mundane, everyday tasks. The dialogue is hilarious if a little ribald, but beneath all the off-color remarks lurks a real relationship. The podcast is up to its 29th episode and closed this week on first-look multiplatform development deal with MTV Networks. But don’t wait for a watered-down version. Check the original out now!

A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange, but all have something to do with this crazy business. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
