Cynopsis: DIGITAL
Good morning, it’s Thursday, June 5, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The big continue to get bigger though syndication. Yahoo became a member of the CBS Audience Network of publishers, joining many of the other large online portals including YouTube, AOL, MSN, Bebo and Fancast. The network distributes ad-supported short-form clips from CBS, CSTV and Showtime and with Yahoo will reach 92% of the US-based web audience. Yahoo also announced that an additional 94 newspapers have joined its online ad consortium, bringing total membership to 779 publications.

FremantleMedia Enterprises announced an initiative to bring a number of its gameshow properties to life with a line of casual, downloadable and mobile games for shows such as Match Game, Press Your Luck, Let’s Make a Deal and Card Sharks. The first releases will be around The Price Is Right later this summer. WorldWinner is developing an online version with real cash payouts; Ludia is working on a downloadable version and Glu Mobile will publish a mobile game.

Turner’s Nascar.com site has a nifty new video interface it calls RaceBuddy. Beginning with the June 8 Pocono 500 race, users can submit questions to an animated avatar who will appear on the site and as a bug on TNT to answer them, as well as conduct chats and interactive polls. Live “RaceBuddy” video coverage on Nascar.com will include on track and in-car footage from multiple angles and points of view.

Hockey fans streamed a record amount of game footage and highlights on NHL.com on Tuesday following Monday’s night’s classic triple overtime Stanley Cup thriller between the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. (The game earned a 3.8 overnight rating for NBC, the best NHL performance in 5 years.) The NHL has also made digital strides this year within its arenas, deploying technology from Burlington, Mass.-based Signiant to acquire on ice and behind-the-scenes footage to share instantly on Jumbotron screens across the country. Signiant utilizes Unigram Data Packaging to prioritize data delivery over broadband to alleviate degrading network congestion.

AOL added versions of its men’s lifestyle site Asylum in Australia, India, Italy and the UK and its gadget site Engadget in Poland as part of a push to expand internationally. AOL currently operates portals (or co-branded portals with HP) is 21 countries and plans to expand to 30 countries by year end.

Travel Channel launched a VOD service on the TVN Entertainment platform.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Producer of the subscription-based massively multiplayer online (MMO) game The Lord of The Rings Online Turbine raised $40 million in equity financing from a group of investors led by Time Warner and GGV Capital.

YouTube rolled out a new video annotation feature allowing users to add clever dialogue bubbles and interactive commentary to videos.

New media studio EQAL signed a deal with Italian production outfit M.A.D. Entertainment to jointly produce an Italian language version of interactive web drama LonelyGirl15.

The ever-popular online video card arena has two new players (perfect for Dad.)

  • Rattlebox.com from TV producers Film Garden Entertainment is recycling old footage such as vintage PSA’s and animation to create e-cards for all occasions. Join for free to use a calendar option to schedule email deliveries months in advance.
  • HD Greetings from Light Factory has new personalized election-themed cards. Put your least favorite candidate in the way of a wrecking ball to express your political views. There’s even a Facebook app.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Here’s a novel idea to enhance your summer vacation. A company called CityListen is producing iPod-compatible city tours to help guide travelers on walking tours of 6 locales, including 6 New York neighborhood and 3 areas of Paris. Each one costs $7.95 per download.

Tell your kids. Speaking avatar platform Oddcast has come up with a line-up of new Digimon characters to use on blogs, social networking sites and ecards.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Verizon Wireless is in talks to acquire Alltel Corp., according to the WSJ, a $27 billion deal that would make it the nation’s largest wireless carrier. Verizon looked at acquiring Alltel last year then walked away when reports of the merger drove the price up.

Jerry Yang’s new worst enemy Carl Ichan expressed his “amazement” at Yahoo’s repeated attempts to derail Microsoft’s takeover bid in an open letter to the Yahoo board. In it he holds out hope that a merger can still be resuscitated if the board rescinds it’s “severance plan” that drove up the cost of the acquisition beyond’s Microsoft’s reach.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Taking another step in the advancement of online advertising, CBS will use Heavy‘s interactive video ad platform The Husky Network to distribute The Burly Sports Show on CBSSports.com. Husky is one of the solutions enabling customizable, targeted skins that appear behind the video, preferred by many users to pre-roll and post-roll ads.

Screenvision will introduce a cross platform text-message based live polling advertising application in a group of 10 DMA cinemas later this month, asking viewers music-related questions then projecting the results seconds later on the digital screen. Spike Lee directed a 2-minute piece of creative about Verizon‘s V Cast Song ID service to try out the service.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 console will introduce in game advertising this year, thanks to a new multiyear partnership between Electronic Arts and ad start-up IGA Worldwide.

Staying with games, Burst Media formed a gaming-themed vertical ad network comprised of 110 sites and 12.7 million unique visitors.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

With CBS.com picking up steam in video views lately, we wondered what demographic was tuning in, given that the linear network skews the oldest out of the major broadcast networks.  It turns out flagship reality franchises such as Big Brother and Survivor have helped attract younger viewers to the site, but a majority seems to fall in the 30-49 range.

Video Streaming Demographics for CBS.com, March 2008
Demo     % of total audience
12-24            15.2%
18-34            30.1%
18-49            36.1%

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

The Washington Post formed a separate online publishing unit comprised of Slate, Slate V, Root and the Big Money, Slate’s planned business site. Jacob Weisberg will serve as Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of The Slate Group. David Plotz will be Slate’s new Editor.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

MSNBC.com unveiled a new web site for Keith Olbermann’s Countdown show just in time for the Presidential showdown, featuring, for the first time, a podcast of the previous day’s full broadcast. (You can tell by viewing today’s clips – Keith is pumped.) It features an interesting hybrid design. The top half of the homepage is devoted to easy-to-browse video clips, podcasts and other fun stuff like the Apology Hall of Fame and the Bill O’Reilly ranting remix. The bottom half takes more of a blog format, including politics, entertainment and “weird news” posts. The video player scales to full-screen and enables embeds and emails. News shows like Countdown lend themselves perfectly to the digital space because they can be divided up into separate, easy to consume segments. MSNBC.com has done a good job here of improving the selection and discovery process.
