Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 28, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Michael Eisner and his new media studio Vuguru will team with Dinosaur Diorama Productions, the creators of the web series The Burg, to produce Vuguru’s second original webisode series, The All-For-Nots.  Comprised of some 24 episodes, each 7-10 minutes long, The All-For-Nots is a web-based comedy that revolves around a documentary film crew as they follow a fictional indie band, The All-For-Nots, on their under-funded and ill planned US tour.  Outside of the weekly episodes, additional All-For-Nots content will be released through other outlets, including raw footage, outtakes, music videos from the band, and interviews.  The series will also incorporate live music events from around the country.  Vuguru’s first teen-targeted web series, Prom Queen, continues this August with Prom Queen Summer Heat.

MORE KIDS STUFF

When the second season of PBS KIDS’ interactive preschool block launches on September 3, 2007, it will include new themes, feature more original music and kid-created content and a new series.  Produced in partnership with Out of the Blue Enterprises, the second season will introduce new curriculum themes in a structured format the will include Music Time, Math Time, Art Time and Reading Time to help establish a distinct preschool environment along with the new series Super Why! and the storytelling device Dot’s Story Factory.  Returning shows include Curious George, Dragon Tales and Clifford the Big Red Dog.  New programming joining PBS Kids includes:

  • Designed to enhance literacy skills, the new series Super Why!, also from Out of the Blue Enterprises, the show revolves around three fairytale characters, in interactive adventures, that change into “Super Readers” (aka reading super heroes) and jump into books to find answers/solutions to daily quandaries.  Out of the Blue Enterprises’ co-founder Angela C. Santomero is one of the creators of Blues Clues.
  • Dot’s Story Factory, supports the development of storytelling skills, and encourages preschoolers to create and share stories online using slides, graphics and characters and with some adult assistance some text, all of which can be submitted to PBS kids (via upload or snail mail) and potentially featured on air.
  • Other new segments include: Movin’ and Groovin’, which will focus on choosing healthy snacks and washing hands; DJ Hooper aim is to get kids up and moving; other music featured throughout the block is being composed by Sandblast Music and Murmur Music.

Sure he doesn’t have the best hair in the business, but what it really comes down to is his personality and voice.  I am, of course, talking about Donald, the original Donald that is, as in Duck, and it is Donald Duck that will be the focus of a week of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episodes on Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney, from Monday, July 23.  The week will wind up with the premiere of a new episode of the show titled, Donald’s Hiccups, on Friday, July 27 at 8:30a.

Disney Channel Japan has picked up the short-form, live-action preschool series This is Daniel Cook and This is Emily Yeung.  Beginning fall 2007, dubbed versions of both series will bow in Japan on Disney Channel.  This is Daniel Cook and This is Emily Yeung are both Canadian co-productions between marblemedia and Sinking Ship Entertainment, and are sold and distributed by marblemedia DistributionPicture Box Distribution provides sales agency services on Daniel.

Spain’s Icon Animation has inked a new range of TV, home entertainment and publishing deals for its healthy eating animated property Vitaminix (104×2′), as well as for several properties from its distribution library.

  • Greece’s 06TV has acquired the home video rights for Vitaminix, and for the animated series Lola & Virginia (52×12′) and Mimi & Mr. Bobo (33×26′).   The broadcaster has also picked up third party animated properties from Icon’s library including, the new series Rat Man (52×13′), a co-production between RAI and Stranemani in Italy, Antena 3’s Cloud Trotters (26×26′), The Nimbos (26×6′) and the new feature film Christopher Columbus (70′).
  • New deals in the Iberian Peninsula include:  Balearic free TV channel IB3 and Telemadrid have both picked up Vitaminix, Skyland (26×26′) and Corneil & Bernie (52×13′), both produced by Millimages UK; In Portugal free TV channel RTP acquires Postman Pat (52×15′) for broadcast on RTP 2, in a deal with Icon and Entertainment Rights, as well as The Edebits (26×13′); additionally Icon has inked a publishing deal for Vitaminix in Portugal with Prime Books.
  • Central Singapore’s Mediacorp Kids free TV channel has also picked up all episodes of Vitaminix and Brazil’s Spot Films has signed a home video deal for The Gnoufs (52×13′).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cookie Jar Entertainment has inked a multi-year, multi-show home video distribution pact with Vivendi Visual Entertainment Canada (VVEC).  Under the deal VVEC will license and distribute three new Cookie Jar properties Magi-Nation, Will & Dewitt and Busytown Mysteries, set for release in Canada fall 2007, as well as Spider Riders, the first video of which will bow this September.  Additionally, VVEC will also distribute Gerald McBoing Boing, from Cookie Jar’s library.  The deal also includes the option to distribute additional titles from Cookie Jar library.

How do you know when a property transcends “hot?”  When it is put on ice, vat else?  And so heading for the rink is Disney’s High School Musical: The Ice Tour, based of course on the Disney Channel movie High School Musical.  Produced by Feld Entertainment and Kenny Ortega, Disney’s High School Musical: The Ice Tour will premiere in NYC, September 29, 2007.  Three different touring companies will make their way to 100+ cities across the US and select cities in Canada, Mexico, South America, Australia and Europe.

Photo-sharing website, Shutterfly, has acquired Make it About Me, a publishing company that produces customized kid’s books including My Adventure on Sesame Street.  Available now on Shutterfly, Make it About Me book lets consumers submit a child’s photo that is then incorporated into the illustrations and storyline of one of its books.  The terms of the deal were not disclosed.  Shutterfly’s licensed content and themed characters includes Thomas and Friends, Clifford the Big Red Dog and Angelina Ballerina.

STONE SOUP

Social networking sites are close to achieving full penetration of the teen and tween market, according to a new paper commissioned by Allow Media & Marketing, according to an Ad Age report.  The study, which found that 96% of online teens and tweens check their profiles at least once a week, suggested marketers seek to engage young consumers by offering them items of value for their pages including utilities, downloads and other exclusive content.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

On the heels of announcing its new $10 million investment iCue service, focusing on providing content for high school students in advanced placement courses, NBC News has appointed Nicola Soares as VP/Marketing, Educational Initiatives.  In this newly created position, Soares will be key in developing a profit based educational division within NBC News, which includes oversight of the distribution and marketing strategy for iCue, identifying and establishing partnerships and creating advisory boards.  Soares will report to NBC News’ CFO, Adam Jones.  A former teacher, most recently, Soares served as VP/National Sales Manager, Intervention Programs at the McGraw-Hill School Solutions Group.
