CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis
07/06/06
Good Morning. It’s Thursday, July 6, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
ABC has closed its Upfront 2006 books, with a total tally of $2.3 billion in ad sales with CPM increases of 3%-4%. That number also includes sports such as college football and NASCAR. Overall, the network sold between 75% and 80% of its ad sales inventory and finished ahead of last year by $200 million, thanks in large part to Grey’s Anatomy and Lost. Also it should be noted the ABC tally for previous years did not include Monday Night Football revenue – that was accounted for separately. ABC is the last of the broadcast networks to finish their upfront selling – Fox brought in $1.8 billion in sales, CBS $2.4 billion, NBC $1.9 billion and finally The CW which brought in an estimated $650 million. The total five network upfront market for 2006-07 season is now at the $9.05 billion mark, down slightly from last year’s $9.1 billion when there were six networks in the running. My Network TV has not completed its upfront sales yet and to date has brought in an estimated $50 million in its upfront dealings.
Tonight’s Premiere:
CBS: Big Brother All Stars at 8p
Spike TV: Raising The Roofs at 1030p
Court TV will premiere its new reality show, Beach Patrol: Miami Beach on July 10 at 8p. This show falls in the RED primetime action block and is the second program that follows a beach rescue team who works to keep its stretch of coastline safe. It’s produced for Court TV by Evolution Film & Tape.
A programming pact between ION Media Networks, Inc. and Sony Pictures Television, results in the i television network clearance to air dozens of classic television series and award-winning films from the Sony library, reaching more than 90 million homes. The TV shows include The Partridge Family, Starsky & Hutch, The Monkees, Charlie’s Angels and more, and some of the films include Oliver!, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Short Circuit.
Getting deep into the minds of the most notorious killers is the new series Most Evil, debuting July 13 on the Discovery Channel. As part of its forensics programming, Most Evil will air Thursdays at 10p and is hosted by forensic scientist Dr. Michael Stone who will examine the minds of Ted Bundy, Dennis Rader and Jeffrey Dahmer and others, ranking each on his scale of evil.
Grupo Televisa, S.A. is interested in selling all or part of its 11.4% stake in Univision following the definitive sales agreement between the U.S. Spanish-language network and the Haim Saban-led group. The Mexican media giant filed a Schedule 13D with the SEC stating that it had written a letter on June 30th to the Providence Equity-led Umbrella Holdings in which it announced that it would not rollover its shares as allowed by Univision and Umbrella’s Merger Agreement. In the SEC filing, Televisa mentioned that it would no longer be bound by the October 2, 1996 Participation Agreement if its holdings fell below 13,578,084 shares of class T common stock. If Televisa is no longer obligated to honor the agreement, it will be able to pursue other U.S. Hispanic business prospects without having to consult Univision. This does not affect the Televisa-Univision programming agreement, which is legally binding until 2017.
The Africa Channel will premiere August 1 in Washington D.C. on Comcast Digital Cable Channel 678. This new network will debut with more than 1,600 hours of original and first-run English-language programming – from news, music, lifestyle, movies, documentaries and more – highlighting the rich and diverse cultures of Africa. With backers such as former UN Ambassador Andrew Young and NBA stars Dikembe Mutombo and Theo Ratliff, the network also boasts strong ties in Washington through its partnerships with groups such as Africare, Africa Wildlife Foundation, Sister Cities International and The Carter Center among others.
Rue McClanahan has been cast in a new original series on the here! network called Ryan’s Life, about a gay teenager who comes of age and contemplates coming out. Rue will portray Ryan’s crazy yet wise grandmother in this half-hour show set to debut in 2007.
FremantleMedia upped Gary Carter to President/Creative Networks division in addition to adding him to the company’s operating board. In this newly created position, he will be in charge of the new unit which combines the worldwide drama and worldwide entertainment departments. Gary will work to grow the company’s drama and entertainment programming and in-house program development in addition to collaborating with FremantleMedia’s international production, distribution and licensing units. He will continue as FMX’s CCO (part of FremantleMedia Creative Networks). Gary will be based in London and report to FremantleMedia CEO Tony Cohen.
Carrie King has been promoted to Creative Services Director at Superstation WGN, where she will oversee all the division’s off and on-air branding efforts and on-air operations. Well done Carrie!
The Cable Center has upped Larry Satkowiak to the position of CEO. Formerly, Larry was the President and COO.
Mary Clarke is the new Director/Eastern Region, Network Distribution & Service at the Hallmark Channels. Based in New York, Mary will implement sales strategies to build distribution and subscriber revenue for the Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel. She will report to Laura J. Lee, Regional VP/Eastern and Central Regions, Network Distribution & Service.
