Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 5, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
An estimated $36.3 million, that is how much the new Paramount and DreamWorks live-action movie Transformers earned in US box office receipts, if you combine the $8.8 million in preview screenings (3,050 theaters) from Monday, July 2, 2007, with the official opening day, Tuesday, July 3 (4,011 theaters), estimated take of $27.5 million. The movie set a new record as the biggest Tuesday movie release ever, easily putting Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (Buena Vista, July 11, 2006) and its Tuesday opening take of $15.7 million out on the plank. Outside the US, Transformers took in $36.3 million, giving the movie a worldwide box office total of $72.5 million.
Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus, the new Disney Records and Hollywood Records CD released June 25, 2007, has entered at number one on the Billboard Top 200 chart for last week, and scanned 325,000+ units, per Nielsen SoundScan. The two-disc release featuring the 14-year-old Cyrus, who stars as Hannah Montana in the Disney Channel series of the same name, also landed at the top spot on the Billboard Children’s and Soundtrack charts, as well as for digital downloads at iTunes. This new CD along with the first Hannah Montana soundtrack, which was released fall 2006 and also bowed at number one on the Billboard Top 200 chart, the first soundtrack to do so, Cyrus becomes the youngest recording artist to have two number one albums in less than a year.
Virgin Comics will release the first issue of Voodoo Child next week on July 11. The first Voodoo Child title is part of a six-issue comic book series from actor Nicolas Cage and his teenage son Weston, both long-time comic book devotees. The senior Cage entered into a deal with Virgin Comics in fall 2006. Set in hurricane torn New Orleans, Voodoo Child revolves around the ghost of a boy, the main character, who was murdered by secessionist soldiers in the Southern US during the 19th century, and the modern day investigation of the disappearance of a number of young girls. Clearly this is not for younger kids.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Teletoon, Canada’s 24/7 animation network, has partnered with Weston Foods and PHD for The Cartoon-Crammed Teletoon Tour this summer. Sponsored by Wonder+, the tour kicked off on Canada Day (July 1, 2007) and in addition to a stage show and a range of activities, fans are also getting a sneak peek at the network’s upcoming fall shows and Teletoon Retro, the new channel slated to launch in October. With a total of ten scheduled stops across Canada, The Cartoon-Crammed Teletoon Tour runs through September 1.
Under a new partnership between JetBlue Airways Corporation and Fox, JetBlue is now the “official airline of Springfield,” as part of the support for Fox’s upcoming The Simpsons Movie, opening July 24, 2007. But this isn’t just a name folks, JetBlue has outfitted its first specialty aircraft that has been named “Woo-Hoo, JetBlue” and sports a picture of Homer Simpson, meanwhile inside passengers can watch continuous Simpson’s episodes in-flight on the Fox channel. The deal also includes a Simpsons Sweepstakes ( http://www.jetblue.com/simpsons) for its TrueBlue frequent flyer members.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
20th Century Fox Animation has appointed Karen Rupert Toliver as its new VP/Production. Toliver, who takes over for John Cohen, will be responsible for development and production of animated properties. She will report to Vanessa Morrison, President, Fox Animation. She most recently helped to develop the Curious George movie for Universal. Previously, Toliver toiled for Disney Feature Animation where she served as a Production Executive on movie projects, including Brother Bear, Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons. Toliver was also developed family movies as a VP at James Pentecost Productions.
BBC Worldwide has named Gill Pritchard as Director of Children’s, Home Entertainment, which includes Children’s (develops and licenses new intellectual property), Audio & Music (audiobooks and music publishing), various a partnerships including with Woolworths plc, 2 entertain, Random Houses’ Ebury imprint for BBC Books and Pearson for learning joint-venture, BBC Active. Most recently, Pritchard, who will take up her new position in September 2007, was Director/Business Development, BBC Worldwide, where she oversaw the development and creation of a commercial media player that BBC Worldwide expects to launch later this year. She was previously Head of Strategy, BBC Worldwide and before that was Financial & Commercial Strategy Manager at the BBC.
After ten years with Mayfair Games, Inc., the company’s CEO, Will Niebling, announced his retirement. Niebling will remain a shareholder of the business. Taking over for the revered Niebling as CEO is Pete Fenlon. Most recently, Fenlon, who has been with the company for 11 years, was as Mayfair’s Studio Director. Larry Roznai will continue as President, adding responsibility for all corporate business. Robert Carty, Sales & Marketing Director, will assume responsibility for both domestic and international markets.
RATINGS
Nick at Nite hosted the network’s premiere of the movie musical Grease (Paramount-1978) on Sunday, July 1, 9-11:30p, delivering 3.5 million total viewers P2+. Among those that tuned in to the movie were K2-11 and Teens 12-17, with 1.1 million and 720,000 respectively, which increased the time period average by triple digits for the demos. … But uh-oh those summer nights…
