Good morning, it’s Thursday, July 31, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing reporting from the NATPE LATV Festival in Hollywood.
 
YouTube
is facing another lawsuit over copyright infringement, this time from the Italian broadcaster Mediaset, the company controlled by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. In a sample analysis Mediaset counted 4,643 of its videos on the video sharing site. The company is seeking $779 million in damages.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Founder of the X Games ESPN unveiled a new network of sites to replace action sports portal EXPN.com, designed to attract more year-round gen Y action sports traffic. The ESPN Action Sports Network will include sport-specific vertical sites from ESPN (such as ESPN Skate) as well as third party destinations including Surfline.com, Vans.com and Active Ride Shop, each of which will contribute content and promotion to the network. Look for plenty of video refreshed daily such as UGC, footage from action sports events and more original video series.
 
GospelMusicChannel.com completed a revamp adopting a cleaner look and a HD video player featuring GNC programming and exclusive concert footage from name brand Gospel/Christian artists. A new original podcast GMC Insider contains news segments, behind-the-scenes footage and special on-location reports.
 
Puerto Rico broadcaster WAPA-TV gained carriage on Verizon FiOS TV in New York, Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Oregon for its WAPA America service. Verizon plans to continue to roll out the channel to additional regions during the next few months. WAPA America will be available as part of FiOS TV’s Spanish Language and La Conexion packages.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Indicating increased interest in video customization, YouTube purchased video mashup/presentation toolmaker Omnisio in a rare acquisition. Omnisio enables users to select clips from multiple sites, post them on a profile page then superimpose comments.
 
Online ad tool provider Clickable completed a $14.5 million Series B round of investment. The financing was led by Founders Fund, with additional backing from existing investors Union Square Ventures and FirstMark Capital.
 
Mobile social media integrator Moblyng expanded its mobile content site offering easy access to top viewed content from MySpace and YouTube, pushing videos, slide shows and photos to mobile devices. The company also unveiled a new mobilize me button on select artist’s MySpace profiles allowing users to sign up to have videos, pictures and slideshows sent to their phones.
 
Swimsuit models seem to translate to pretty much any platform or culture. Miami-based social networking site Quepasa.com and Latinas Illustrated are holding their annual model search online for the first time this year, culminating in a runway show in Mexico City. A panel of celebrity and industry judges will pick 13 winning models to appear in the 2009 Latinas Illustrated Swimsuit calendar.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Top MSO Comcast saw year-over-year revenue growth of 11% during Q2, thanks to 50% growth in its telco business and 10% growth in its high-speed internet business. Profit targets alluded Comcast, however, as it is being forced to aggressively discount its services in this “challenging economic environment” in the words of CEO Brian Roberts. The company gained 320k new digital subs, helping to offset the loss of 138k basic cable losses. The average Comcast customer now shells out $110 for its triple play services. 
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Online ad network CPX Interactive named the Diamond Empowerment Fund’ (D.E.F.) as its next beneficiary. The D.E.F. was founded by music mogul Russell Simmons to raise money for education programs in diamond producing African nations.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
IFC
upped Craig Parks to VP/Digital Media. He will oversee the networks’ alternative platforms including IFC.com, IFC syndicated digital content and IFC Free, the network’s video on demand service and continue to report to Jennifer Caserta, IFC’s EVP & GM.
 
Mobile technology provider Waterfall Mobile hired former Motricity executive John Matra as SVP/Business Development. In his new role, Matra will oversee strategic business development and sales across film, music, television, radio and print.
 
New York-based marketing and communications consultancy Attention announced that Colin Nagy has joined as Director of Social Media. Colin will oversee the firm’s strategy pertaining to online public relations and social media marketing campaigns.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
We stumbled into an interesting story at the LATV Fest. Warner Bros. commissioned web production outfit For Your Imagination to created the web series Kyle Piccolo: Comic Shop Therapist to promote the wildly successful Dark Knight, for a relatively modest sum (under $50,000.) The idea was to increase the film’s street cred among comic book geeks. FYI got X-Men illustrator John Cassaday to direct and co-create, who went on to faithfully capture the spirit and weirdness of the comics subculture. Best of all for the web studio, FYI retains the rights. And Warner Bros. was content to place pre and post roll trailers with the clips instead of demanding more product integration – freeing it up to repurpose the show elsewhere or continue developing content around the characters. The model could point the way for more original web productions, according to For Your Imagination CEO Paul Kontonis, who is always looking for innovative ways to fund original productions. And for Warner Bros. the box office results ($300 million and counting) speak for themselves. Maybe Speed Racer could have benefited from this kind of approach … 

P.S. It seems more than a few inaccuracies aren’t hurting the Batman. The ever-watchful users at Moviemistakes.com have already counted 23 boo boos so far.
