With Hispanics over-indexing in many online usage categories, NBCU figured it was time to start super serving this audience by utilizing digital platforms. Telemundo announced it will premiere a new primetime full-length novella across the network’s digital platforms utilizing a new hybrid distribution model, prior to airing it on the network nationally. The 120-episode “Las Aparicio,” about a family of three women who no longer rely on men in their lives, will launch on via a new HD broadband player developed specifically for Telemundo by MSN. The show is being presented in two formats: as a free ad-supported show and as pay-per-view episodes without ads (priced at $2.99/mo, or 99 cents for a single episode.)


In an attempt to lure authors away from rival platforms, Amazon unveiled a new revenue split for the Kindle store, offering to give writers 70% of all sales revenues, minus expenses. (These amount to delivery costs rated at $.15/MB or an average of $.06 per unit sold.). The new structure, in line with Apple’s iTunes App model, includes stipulations that list prices must be between $2.99 and $9.99 and at least 20% the hard copy price. In addition, Amazon said it is giving authors the ability to sell their Kindle digital books on their own websites, using the new HMTL5 format.
Google is looking to partner with independent booksellers around the country to power e-Book sales on their websites using the Google Editions storefront, per the NYTimes. The company is close to inking a deal with the American Booksellers Association to become the primary source for multi-formatted electronic books for the group’s 1,400+ bookstores, the idea being that it’s better to offer an eBook alternative than losing the customer to another site. (Google Editions’ royalty split with authors is 63%, by the way.)
Verizon Wireless penned a deal with Hispanic broadcaster Azteca America to distribute a line up of its variety, news, entertainment, sports and telenovela shows on its V CAST mobile platform, available on demand with a V CAST’s $10/month subscription.


Continuing to address the backlash against its information sharing policies, Facebook introduced a new permission feature that requires third party application providers to notify its users exactly how and what kind of information they are sharing. For instance, a new JibJab interactive greeting card app is asking permission to access users’ friends’ birthdays and photos in order to create cards for them, notes Facebook CTO Bret Taylor in a blog post.
has launched a new tech/gadget podcast dubbed, starring the indefatigable Cali Lewis. Cali stopped producing her similarly entitled “Geek Brief TV” earlier this month for the Mevio podcast network after hosting 800 episodes.
Multiplatform Instant Messaging (IM) provider Meebo has partnered with Hearst’s Seventeen magazine to power new social functionality on’s newly redesigned site. The integration allows readers to drag and drop their favorite content, comment and share it with their friends via the Meebo Bar that follows them across the site. Meebo says 5,000 sites are now deploying the Meebo bar, launched in Dec. 2009.
Entertainment site HitFlix has secured $1.6 million in second round funding led by angel investment network Tech Coast Angels. Lead Tech Coast Angels investor Yuri Pikover will also join the HitFlix board.

Toronto-based demand-side integrated search marketing start-up Chango has closed on $1.4 million in series A funding, joined by new investors Metamorphic Ventures and 24/7 Real Media founder Geoff Judge. (Metamorphic Managing Partner Lewis Gersh and Judge will also join Chango’s board of directors.) Chango enables advertisers to mine for new customers by importing existing AdWords and Yahoo Search Marketing campaigns and utilizing integrated keyword targeting, CPC bidding, dynamic ad-serving and CPA conversion tracking tools.


After months of successfully redirecting mainland Chinese users to its Hong Kong-based search site, Google is reporting that search services are now being partially blocked in the mainland. (Google maintains a daily report of what services in China are being blocked here.) The “partially blocked” tag means that 10%-66% of content is being blocked. Google began linking Chinese users to the Hong Kong site, rather than redirecting them, earlier this week.
TiVo signed a deal to become the exclusive software provider on all next generation set-tops to be deployed by Spanish MSO ONO. ONO plans to offer its subscribers a seamless convergence between broadband and linear television content, the focus of the new Tivo Premiere interface. ONO will serve as exclusive distributor of TiVo’s technology in Spain, with the two companies working together to develop additional applications and integrations in the Spanish marketplace. Other vendors such as Nagravision and Cisco will also work on the launch ONO’s broadband-powered TV platform.


That was quick. Microsoft is shuttering the social networking-oriented Kin Mobile phone division less than two months after its initial phones went on sale. Kin’s sizeable development team will move on to work on the Windows Phone 7 system. This probably shouldn’t come as a shock – Verizon announced just last weekend it was cutting the price of two Kin models by as much as 50%, presumably to stimulate demand.
The latest date being bandied about for Verizon to get Apple‘s iPhone in the U.S. is next Jan., according to a report in Bloomberg. (Forgive us our skepticism, but these reports have been surfacing for years.)
Oddcast has built an audio recording app to promote Universal’s upcoming animated feature “Despicable Me.” Bark out voice commands (after agreeing to allow the site to take over your mic) and the app’s voice recognition software will make sure the minions perform your bidding.


Ad management start-up TagMan hired Wendy L. Zenchyshyn as VP/Business Development and Aaron K. Gragg as VP/Sales, both newly created positions. Both will be based in New York and report to Jon Baron, GM of TagMan.
Pamela Post was upped to VP/Original Programming for MTVN’s Logo. She will continue to report to Dave Mace, SVP/Original Programming.
Matthew Pasternak has joined health-themed video network HealthiNation as VP/Partnerships & Market Development. He is charged with expanding HealthiNation’s partner network and adding new advertiser categories to include health consumer products.


National youth-targeted cable networks trying to offer an alternative to the MTV family have come and gone over the years, as none have managed to make much headway among operators or audiences. One start-up is hoping to utilize technology and a built-in web audience to succeed where others have failed. is a broadband video site based in Brooklyn that focuses on what its founders call “Verge Culture,” an eclectic, multi-ethnic mash-up of fashion, music, art and attitudes that help set the agenda for the under-30 crowd across the country. The channel grew out of the Boston-based Karmaloop fashion site that distributes the work of celebrity designers, leveraging “evangelists” who rep the clothing in their hometowns for a share of the profits. (These reps make up less than 1% of its customers but account for some 20% of the site’s sales, according to co-founder Greg Selkoe.) Such grass-roots support will be brought to bear to bring the lifestyle-themed Karmaloop TV brand to cable, along with an iTV angle; the channel will utilize iTV platforms to offer clickable advertising within the shows, leading to direct purchasing of clothing and accessories worn on air. The company built its own proprietary clickable video software for the website and demoed the system using an integrated set top at this year’s Cable Show. (“We Didn’t’ Leave TV; TV Left Us,” was the slogan that adorned its booth.) Mr. Selkoe sees it as a perfect way for MSOs to get their feet wet in interactive television. “What better brand to start with than Karmaloop. Our audiences already use this technology to buy stuff online – they’re the early adopters,” he said.
