Bowing to pressure from the British Parliament and the court of public opinion, News Corp. officially withdrew its bid to buy the 61% of BSkyB it doesn’t already own on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the company’s phone-hacking scandal has spread to American shores as Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D., W.Va.) asked U.S. authorities to investigate whether American phones may have been hacked, including victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Another three Senators have raised questions about News Corp.’s violation of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices, reacting to allegations that company employees bribed police and government officials.
A day after raising its most affordable streaming/rental price by more than 60%, Netflix struck a multiyear renewal with NBCUniversal to stream movies and TV shows stretching back 6 decades from the complete “Leave it To Beaver” to past seasons of “30 Rock.” Confirming its “Rerun TV” moniker applied to the company by Comcast/NBC CEO Brian Roberts, all shows including SNL – which has been available a day after it aired – will be put up only after the following season begins. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but one analyst quoted in THR speculated that Netflix would have to pay as much as $300 million annually for the rights, up from just $25 million/year in its former contract. (The company, which is also facing higher bandwidth costs, is being taken to task in blogs and social media circles for not doing a better job of explaining the rationale behind its price hikes to its customers. It will be interesting to see how many complaining subscribers actually churn out of the service because of the move.)
BBC Worldwide has launched a new free VOD and text-based news service available on Samsung‘s broadband-connected Smart TV platform, with Swiss watchmaker Omega signed up as the charter advertiser. The web-based service offers ups video clips and text from BBC News Online sourced from the BBC’s international news services.
Msnbc.com announced a partnership to contribute news content to the popular Pulse app for the iPad, iPhone, Android phones and tablets, and the web. Featured Msnbc.com content includes “Top Headlines,” “Business,” and “Technolog.”
20th Century Fox is hosting sneak peek screenings of “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” at nearly 300 U.S. and Canadian theaters on Aug. 10, two days before the movie opens wide on Aug. 12.

Marketers continue to struggle with evaluating their online ad campaigns and much of the problem lies in a lack of research standards that end up making equitable comparisons impossible. The IAB released a new best practices guide yesterday to help call attention to some proven techniques. Their findings included:
- Avoid survey sizes that are too small – a 15-million impressions campaign should be the minimum before a site considers running a study on behalf of advertisers
- Don’t overly limit the scope – marketers should marry their campaign effectiveness research to salient online and offline metrics to get a more comprehensive view
A new modeling methodology introduced by ComScore allocates display ad campaign performance by publisher or publisher type, demographic groups, interest segments, audience segments from third-party data providers, advertising creative, creative placements and client-defined segments. The model is currently being applied to comScore AdEffx Brand Survey Lift studies in the United States.
Electronic Arts struck a deal to buy Seattle-based casual games company PopCap Games for $650 million in cash and another $100 million in stock, (the deal could be worth as much as $1.3 billion with incentives.) Best known for megahits “Bejeweled” and “Plants vs. Zombies,” the PopCap purchase is EA’s latest attempt to keep up with Facebook-friendly Zynga; the deal will give make the company the number two game developer on the social networking platform. Digitally-distributed games are the fastest-growing segment of the business, expected to grow from $74 billion this year to $112 billion in 2015, according to research firm Gartner.
T-Mobile announced that it will double the speed of its 4G network in 56 additional markets starting this week, delivering speeds of up to 42 Mbps for users who plug in with the Rocket 3.0 USB modem. The company is gradually updating its network so that a 4G handset alone can enjoy the increased speeds, with upgrades already complete in Ann Arbor, Baltimore, Boise, Boston, Charlotte, Hartford, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and Washington D.C.
Rovi signed its latest TotalGuide licensee in Toshiba, which plans to integrate the IPG solution in televisions, Blu-ray players and recorders and mobile devices within the United States and Europe.
About 12% of the US internet population currently use tablet computers and that number is projected to grow to 23% to 54 million people by early 2012, according to a recent survey conducted by Frank N. Magid Assoc. and commissioned by the Online Publishers Association. This growing group actively seeks out weather, entertainment, news, sports and financial info on the device and they’re more willing than smartphone users to pay for it. Over 87% of tablet users are accessing content and information and 93% of tablet users have downloaded apps, with the average tablet user downloading 20 apps. Another 79% of app downloaders have paid for apps in the last 12 months with around 26% of all apps downloaded being of the paid variety. On average, those who have downloaded apps on tablets have spent $53 on apps in the past 12 months.
Amazon introduced a new Kindle with Special Offers model, this one with 3G connectively provide by AT&T bundled into the $139 price, which is $50 cheaper than what the ad-free version goes for. The model joins the $114 WiFi-only ad supported Kindle and replaces the previously launched $164 3G model that didn’t come with the AT&T-sponsored subsidy.
Amazon is also planning to launch a full-fledged tablet computer before Oct., according to a WSJ report, featuring a touchscreen color interface and access to videos, e-books and digital music. The launch will accompany two new Kindle editions, one that will feature the e-reader’s first touchscreen interface.
The BlackBerry App World announced its one billionth download, just over two years after the store launched.
Christina Miller has been named GM of Turner-managed NBA Digital, including oversight of NBA TV, NBA.com, WNBA.com, NBADLeague.com, NBA League Pass and the league’s broadband and wireless divisions. She will also continue to serve as SVP of Turner Sports Strategy/Marketing/Promotions, reporting directly to Lenny Daniels, COO and EVP, Turner Sports. Christina replaces Bryan Perez, who left NBA Digital last Friday to join a rival company.
Jodi Kahn has been upped from EVP to the newly created position of President of NBCU’s iVillage. She reports to Nicholas Lehman, President of Digital for NBCUniversal Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media, which houses iVillage.
The Weather Channel Companies has hired former Comcast Interactive Media executive Michael Finnerty as VP/Web Products managing weather.com. He will oversee prioritization, development and maintenance of the website, is based in TWCC’s Atlanta headquarters and reports to Cameron Clayton, EVP of Digital Products.
Mochila has elevated former EVP Steve McEvoy to the position of Chief Revenue Officer. He will be based in New York and will report to Benjamin Chen, Chairman and CEO.
The newly redesigned GolfChannel.com sent contributors Rex Hoggard and Randall Mell over to Northern Ireland a week in advance of this week’s Open Championship to blog on the rising fame of Rory McIlroy, among other topics. Jason Sobel and John Hawkins will also be onsite at England’s windswept Royal St. George course this week, blogging and producing live chats at GolfTalkCentral during the tournament. The redesign has been in the works for more than a year according to Mike Lowe, Senior Director, Business and Strategy, Golf Channel.com. Developers set out to integrate products such as online T-time site GolfNow.com and provide a better home for popular content such as instructional videos sourced from the Comcast-owned channel. The site’s operational team has recently relocated to the same digs as the on-air team in Orlando and is working on a larger integration with NBC.com’s golf destination that should drive considerably more traffic to the site. NBC Sports/Golf Channel on air integration helped deliver the channel’s best ratings ever during Q1 with some programming segments up more than 25%, says Golf Channel President Mike McCarley. “Once online integration is finalized, we expect similar momentum.”
