~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

As promised at its upfront presentation, Court TV will change its name and image as the true-crime and courtroom network undergoes an extensive branding overhaul. The effort will produce a new look, new logo and new expanded programming all under the name of truTV. The year-long rebranding process started with viewer research to find out what type of programming they wanted on the network. The schedule will continue to include a six-hour block of trial coverage each weekday morning, followed at 3p with Star Jones’ new one-hour talk show. During primetime, early fringe and late night, truTV will rely on some of its tried-and-true original series such as Forensic Files, Haunting Evidence and Speeders. Based on the new viewer research, the network also has four new series in development (all working titles):

  • Neighbors 911 – feuding neighbors are forced to settle their difference with the help of former Green Beret Myke Hawke. From Granada America.
  • Ski Patrol – from Bunim/Murray Productions, this series will profile people who work in extreme outdoor environments.
  • Black Gold – this series will follow oil “wildcatters’ as they try to find the last remaining U.S. reserves in Texas. From Original Productions.
  • Outlaw Chasers – actually a series of specials, this program will feature a pair of storm chasers as they charge through the Midwest, hoping to film a tornado from the inside. Produced by Tiger Aspect USA.

PBS World, a new channel which will highlight PBS’ documentary, public affairs and news programming 24/7 will begin August 15 and be available to PBS member stations across the country. The new channel will bring together such nonfiction series as American Experience, Frontline, Nature, The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, Nova and The Tavis Smiley Show, as well as Ken Burns’ popular miniseries and independent films and other programs that fit the channel’s focus. At the launch date, PBS World will be offered in nearly 20 markets including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Cleveland and Tampa among others, which will represent 26% of the U.S. TV households. Participating local affiliates will be able to offer local news along with the national programming and brand the channel with their own call letters. PBS World is jointly produced and distributed by PBS, WGBH Boston and Thirteen/WNET, in association with American Public Television and the National Educational Telecommunications Association.

Lifetime will debut its next two original dramas Side Order of Life and State of Mind on Yahoo! TV before they premiere on air this Sunday at 8p and 9p, respectively. Lifetime also sneak-previewed hit drama Army Wives on Yahoo! TV.  And, not unexpectedly, the network has ordered added a second season of Army Wives, with 13 new episodes, slated to launch next spring.

Fans of the radio show Car Talk will now see Tom and Ray Magliozzi, also known as “Click and Clack – the Tappet brothers” on TV. PBS has created a yet unnamed 30m animated comedy series based on the NPR show that stars Tom and Ray, set in their fictional garage at Car Talk Plaza in Cambridge, MA. The ten episodes are slated for summer of 2008 and will feature the guys and their colorful crew of mechanics and co-workers. Listeners are invited to submit title suggestions for the TV show through the Car Talk radio show.

Tuesday night’s series premiere of The Singing Bee from Juma Entertainment and The Gurin Co. has stirred some buzz for NBC, as the 9:30p debut brought in the highest A18-49 rating (5.0/14) and overall viewership (13.3 million total viewers) of any summer series on any network so far this year, according to live plus same day results from Nielsen.

SCI FI Channel got attention Tuesday night as Eureka made its second season debut at 9p. The original series brought in 2.5 million total viewers, 1.4 million A25-54 viewers and 1.3 million A18-49 viewers.

DIY Network will kick off Backyard Stadiums, a new home improvement series on September 5 at 10p. Hosted by NY Giants football player Michael Strahan, each half-hour show will teach viewers how to build mini sports arenas in a backyard space.

Made In Hollywood, the weekly one-hour syndicated entertainment series showcasing how and why movies are made today, has been picked up for a third season. Produced by Connection III Entertainment Corp. Made In Hollywood currently airs in 75% of the US, and on stations in 22 of the Top 25 markets including KCAL/Los Angeles, WCBS/New York, WHDH/Boston, WCIU/Chicago, KGO/San Francisco, WFTV/Orlando, WSOC/Charlotte and KMBC/Kansas City.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CW‘s Smallville has added Laura Vandervoort to the cast int he role of Supergirl.  Her character will be introduced in the premiere episode this season.  Elsewhere at CW, Katie Cassidy has landed the role of Ruby, a demon hunter, in Supernatural.

Joining the cast of Private Practice on ABC will be KaDee Strickland, as a doctor and hospital administrator.

Showtime has a new project in development from Smokehouse called Doubting Thomas, about a family of televangelists, and the youngest son who now must take over the family business. Per Variety, the pilot will be written by Peter Spears with Tom C. Smith, who is also executive producing along with George Clooney and Grant Heslov.  This project may make it to the schedule in 2008.

Also on tap at Showtime is a project from John Singleton called Trade, about women who work as high-end call girls, says Variety. Meredyth Smith is writing the pilot and will exec prod with Singleton.
