On the eve of CES Comcast has answered the call for more viewing flexibility, announcing plans to offer Slingbox style in-home streaming of live TV and access to on demand content via applications for Apple’s iPad and Android-powered tablets. A new “Play Now” option coming to Comcast’s Xfinity TV iPad app in the coming weeks will enable subscribers to view nearly 3,000 hours of On Demand Content via Wi-Fi. Comcast has also launched a new feature on that enables customers to search for programming and to change channels on a TV set directly from the site. The news should provide a huge boost to the coming line of Android tablets, which are expected to help more than double tablet PC penetration in the U.S. from 10.3 million units in 2010 to 24 million units this year, according to a newly revised forecast from Forrester


The subscription-based Hulu Plus service secured inclusion on Vizio’s Internet Apps platform, available on a growing line of LCD HDTVs and Blu-ray players. Vizio also announced new content partnerships with social discovery platform BigStar, MOG, Namco Bandai Games, OnLive, Skype and Vimeo.
HD on demand movie streaming service Vudu announced it will begin offering 3D movie titles beginning next week, available in 480p, 720p or 1080p resolution.
Guys at least will have something to watch on their 3D television as Sports Illustrated struck a partnership with Sony Network Entertainment to bring its Swimsuit video franchise to the format. On demand videos will be offered for rental through Sony’s Qriocity 3D VOD service.


Lifetime‘s ripped-from-the-headlines movie “The Craigslist Killer” was the network’s 5th best original movie premiere ever (5.4 million viewers) and helped record a high water mark for unique viewers.
CNBC announced that “The Facebook Obsession,” its expose on how users’ lives are effected by the social networking site, will premiere tonight at 9pm ET.


Green Deals is a new environmentally-themed daily couponing site featuring Green-approved products and services. Recent featured products include organic chocolates, green cleaning supplies and environmentally friendly water bottles.

Cloud-based music and movie streaming service mSpot has completed an integration with Google to allow mSpot customers to listen to music and view movie rentals through the Google TV interface, per TechCrunch.


Ad targeting specialist Turn closed on a $20 million round of series D financing led by Maryland-based Greenspring Associates. The company says it will use the funds to invest in technology infrastructure and international operations.
New York-based digital out-of-home ad firm Access 360 Media has raised an additional $12 million in a series C funding round led by Columbia Capital with prior investor Mission Ventures also participating.


The SEC has launched a formal investigation into whether current disclosure rules need to be reworked to prevent technology companies such as Facebook from raising an unlimited amount of capital without having to disclose the kind of information public companies are required to, reports the WSJ.
Loop Pointer developer Hillcrest Labs has teamed with Broadcom Corp. to introduce a new low cost, embedded Bluetooth-based motion control system for TV manufacturers compatible with a variety of smart TV platforms including Linux, Android or Google TV-based solutions. Hillcrest also announced it has licensed its Freespace pointing technology to Japan’s SMK Electronics.
Tribune’s TMS data division struck a deal with UK MSO Virgin Media to provide entertainment metadata for multiple platforms, including TV schedules, TV programs, VOD and celebrity metadata and images.


Nielsen provided a smorgasbord of facts and figures that provide a snapshot into how media-related devices are now embraced by U.S. households in a new report. For instance, the ave. # of apps smartphone users have on their phones is 27. Only 3% of those surveyed said they will definitely purchase a 3DTV in the next 12 months while 59% said they definitely will not. Apple iOS still leads Smartphone platforms with 28.6% of the U.S. market, according to a Nov. Mobile Insights report, but Android is now within the margin for error with 25.8%. Bookseller Barnes & Noble has unveiled a new Kid-targeted eBook reader app for the iPad that provides access to some 100 interactive kids’ books including the titles “Caps for Sale,” “Skippyjon Jones” and “Sheep in a Jeep.” Kids can interact with the text and zoom in and around graphics while parents can monitor what titles they can access through a password protected control panel. B&N’s general market Nook app for the iPad provides access to some 12k children’s chapter books.
Beginning this Spring connected TVs and Blu-ray players from nearly a dozen manufacturers including Sony, Sharp, Panasonic and Toshiba will sport a dedicated Netflix button that will provide one-click access to Netflix rentals.
Amazon unveiled a version of its free Kindle eBook reading app for Windows Phone 7 users.
MedHelp added to its line of heath-themed iPhone apps with its Moody Me Mood Diary app, launched with GE. The app allows you to record event, medications and sleep patterns to help you better understand what triggers your changes in mood.


New York-based digital agency AgencyNet named a quartet of new senior executives: Matthew Tepper joins as VP/Business Strategy; Valerie Brown joins VP/Client Strategy; Michael Brady joins as VP/Client Services; and Ty Wong joins as Creative Director.


announced the release of a new unified TV platform bringing together digital TV and online content with social media and communications applications. Videoscape, delivered through a broadband-connected set top, will be positioned as a way for operators to compete with Netflix and other over-the-top solutions and also provide integration of voice, high-speed data, Wi-Fi and network traffic routing. The platform promises better optimized video for remote viewing though advanced buffering and network controls – an increasing concern as mobile viewing ramps up on ever congested networks. Cisco named Australian triple play service provider Telstra as one of its first customers for the platform.
