Good morning, it’s Thursday, January 31, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing, coming to you from the NATPE 2008 convention in Las Vegas.
Better late than never. MySpace finally followed suit with Facebook in opening up its platform to third party applications. The MySpace developers platform, which goes live on Feb. 5, will enjoy some later adopter advantages. For one it will support Google‘s OpenSocial initiative from day one, enabling interoperability between other social networks including imeem, LinkedIn, Ning and orkut. Additionally MySpace says it will focus on monetizing third party content by allowing developers to share in ad revenue sold by its national sales team. Facebook, which opened up its API last month to allow apps to be added to outside sites, has seen its traffic virtually double to 23 million unique users since launching its developer platform last May.
Local station technology solutions provider TitanTV has transformed itself into a full service online video platform, offering stations daily video content affiliates can stream and sell to on their local sites. Stations can link to a VOD portal featuring short-form original shows like Titan Greens, offering environmental news with a pop cultural twist or RevYou, a weekly man-on-the street movie commentary show that interviews moviegoers as they come out of the theater. TitanTV also relaunched its listings grid, adding daily video recommendations.
IFC will cover this year’s Independent Spirit Awards across multiple platforms, featuring live red carpet video streaming at IFC.com, beginning the morning of the event on Feb. 23.
Fast growing female-focused lifestyle site SheKnows.com acquired reality TV fan site RealityTVMagazine.com.
Brash Entertainment, Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures are collaborating on an online game based on the gory Saw horror franchise. The game will feature a unique storyline that will answer questions left unanswered by the Saw films.
PBS is providing content to the free educational-themed iTunesU service including video clips, lectures, interviews and teacher guides.
WSJ.com, CNET and NBC.com debuted a new feature powered by social networking software solution Loomia, allowing users who opt in to see what their Facebook friends are reading. The Seen This? application also comes as a widget that can be can be embedded on profile pages, pulling content from various publishers.
Former President of Fox TV and USA Networks Stephen Chao has put down his surf board and launched Wonderhowto.com, another instructional video site featuring over 90,000 entries in 400 categories. Series A investment was led by General Catalyst Partners and ad sales will be powered by Scripps Networks.
Metacafe added more mobile partnerships including deals with Buongiorno, Dyuna and Mobile Streams, increasing the reach of its short-form videos to mobile users in more than 100 countries.
Online video services provider ROO Group struck an exclusive partnership with Abacast and Pando Networks to offer peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming solutions to its current and future customers. The deal, allowing ROO to utilize additional bandwidth on the edge of broadband networks, will lower streaming costs dramatically for its customers, according to ROO Chairman and CEO Kaleil Isaza Tuzman.
The Subway sandwich franchise is suing rival Quiznos and Viacom’s iFilm site for running a user-generated video contest Subway says slandered its brand, reported The New York Times. iFilm encouraged its users to upload video testimonials of why they find Quiznos’ subs to be superior to its rival’s. Subway claims the videos made false and disparaging claims and is seeking punitive damages.
Amazon.com reported that Q4 net income more than doubled over the previous year, thanks to discounting and free shipping incentives over the holiday season, with net income of $207 million.
Web based publishing platform Jacked.com launched a new Sports Top application that monitors television broadcast and automatically searches for and publishes relevant content to users’ PCs such as player profiles, stats, in-game photos, videos and news in real time.

Conflicting research reports disagree about how prepared America is for the digital transition. The NAB found that awareness has more than doubled over the past year from 38% to 79%. A different survey from the Consumer Reports National Research Center found 74% were aware of the transition but have major misconceptions about its impact. Over half (58%) believe all TVs will need a digital converter box to function, 48% believe that only digital televisions will work after 2009 and nearly one quarter (24%) believe they will need to throw away all of their analog television sets; none of which is true. The NAB estimates that more than 34 million households that rely on over-the-air television signals will be affected by the transition.

Christopher Raleigh has been named SVP and General Sales Manager of The Weather Channel Media Solutions. He will be based in the New York office of The Weather Channel and will oversee all TWC national sales offices, reporting to Paul Iaffaldano, EVP and general manager of TWC Media Solutions. Christopher was previously SVP/Advertising Sales for GSN.
One of the more interesting new concepts to come along in the multiplatform space is the Auction Network, built from the ground up to be interactive. Users can watch and bid on live auctions from around the world right now via the broadband site. But the network is seeking cable and mobile carriage with plans to utilize each platform’s interactive components to allow viewers to check out what they’re bidding on before they buy. The company is headed up by former President and COO of TV Guide Networks Pam McKissick and is basing its ITV architecture on the Open TV platform.
