Good morning, it’s Thursday, January 24, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
CBS Interactive acquisition Last.fm launched a free ad supported on demand music streaming platform, signing deals with all 4 major labels and another 150,000 indie outfits to offer social listeners some 3.5 million different tracks to choose from. Last.fm’s software prohibits its 15 million users from listening to tracks more than 3 times before purchasing them from partners including iTunes or Amazon. (But then again log-ins aren’t initially required, so anyone who knows how to delete cookies can get around this.) The site also provides unsigned artists with a way to reach listeners through viral recommendations, and just like their label partners, earn royalties on per-download basis. Advertisers will be able to reach listeners based on years of user data. It will be interesting to see if video becomes the next frontier for Last.fm. CBS has said it hopes to use the site to build new communities around Viacom as well as non-Viacom video content.
Turner Broadcasting revved up its existing deal with NASCAR to extend management and operation of Nascar.com through 2015. The site has grown by 25% in terms of average unique users since coming under the Turner umbrella, according to Turner Sports Interactive. Turner Sports also completed a redesign of PGATour.com including integration of more video content and increased PGA Tour coverage. 3rd hole coverage of the Buick Invitational live from Torrey Pines begins today.
Starz extended its output deals with Sony Pictures Television and Walt Disney Studios into the next decade, bringing it total number of movies to over 1200 titles including new library agreements with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, MGM Worldwide Television Group and Universal Pictures. The rights includes premium broadcast, on demand, HD and broadband viewings.
Litton Entertainment is offering “Better Living” tips on living a greener life to partners for use on local stations newscast and websites. The service will consist of 260 daily reports.
CSTV.com entered into a digital partnership with USAToday.com making the CSTV XXL video player and GameTracker widget available on its Sports pages as well as select live video and audio coverage.
MGM secured carriage for its newly launched MGM HD movie channel on Verizon’s FiOS TV service which will roll out late this year across all FiOS systems in 1080i resolution. MGM HD launched on DirecTV last October.
TVN Entertainment entered into an agreement to manage and distribute Las Vegas-based Player Network’s library of on demand content.
Online movie service ReelTime Rentals signed a distribution deal with Sony Pictures Television to offer much needed, major studio recent releases and library titles to its subscribers using its P2P based “PowerGrid” player. ReelTime offers movies and TV shows a la carte or on a subscription basis.
YouTube launched a video sharing site in South Korea with content from local partners including CJ Internet, TU Media and JYP Entertainment. The localized site, YouTube’s 18th outside of the U.S., is a relative late-comer in a market which boasts some of the most advanced infrastructure and one of the highest broadband penetration rates in the world.
WWE is promoting this month’s Royal Rumble PPV event by staging a virtual rumble on the Habbo site. Habbo users are asked to vote on which 30 WWE wrestlers they would like to see compete.
Jetset Studios devised a titillating interactive campaign for 20th Century Fox’s Meet the Spartans, asking users to enter their name, photo and phone number on CarmenHasaCrushonYou.com to create a customized video interview with star Ms. Electra herself. Carmen reveals a digitally rendered tattoo of the user then texts a promo of the film to the number provided.
Netflix reported 4Q revenue of $302.4 million – up 9% year-over-year – thanks to a net subscriber gain of 451,000 during the quarter. The company is projecting even more net adds in 2008, as competing cable and internet VOD services continue to suffer from later windows and higher pricing. Netflix should also get a boost from extending its web-based viewing option to the Mac and adding access to game consoles and internet-enabled set top boxes, all planned for 2008.
WWP Group’s Wunderman purchased Chinese digital ad network Agenda, one of the largest and most lauded online ad agencies in Asia with offices in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan and KL.
The MPAA admitted to deploying fuzzy math in its 2005 estimates of illegal movie downloads by college students. An “isolated error” by research firm LEK incorrectly concluded that 44% of the movie industry’s $6.1 billion in losses were due to piracy by college students. Now they’re saying 15% of losses (accounting for nearly a quarter of a $ billion in lost revenue) is more like it.
Political online revenue is on the rise, but there are conflicting reports about just how much publishers can expect to receive. A new report from Borrell Associates predicts $20 million in 2008, less than .05% of all political ad spending, projected to reach 4.8 billion this year. Lehman Brothers’ Douglas Anmuth paints a rosier picture, projecting $110 million or 3.6% of the total ad spend.
The online gaming subscription business will drive future growth in the gaming industry, according to a new report from In-Stat, as Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo turn to online gaming to add additional revenue and build stronger brand loyalty.
Former Universal Domestic Television President Steve Rosenberg is taking the reigns of PV Media Group as CEO, formed from the combination of contextual/behavioral ad solution provider AdOn Network and search-marketing specialist Prime Visibility. PVMG also named Seth Page as COO and Richard O’Connnor as CFO.
Charlie Echeverry was appointed SVP/Digital Sales of Univision Online, overseeing advertising and sponsorship revenue for the western region and national sales for mobile marketing. He will report to Byron Elton, SVP/Ad Sales, Univision Online.
Brad Grant was hired as Director of Video On Demand for Turner Network Sales, the domestic distribution, sales and marketing arm of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.).
Fyrebug.com offers a new spin on the casual gaming craze, allowing users to upload songs and images of their favorite pop cultural idols then create games around them. The site has more than 20 different game engines to choose from, which can be freely embedded on a blog or social network page. The site is kind of a Petri dish for what’s hot at the moment. Founder Rob Kamphausen says more than 1,300 users have signed up to use the site since it launched in beta December 4.
